Portrait of Mien de Bruijne-Proos (1913-1914). Jan Sluijters (Dutch, 1881-1957). Oil on canvas. Museum Voorlinden.
Sluijters painted portraits in bright colors and free brushwork. The artist liked to look for his subjects close to home. The painter Wilhelmina (Mien) de Bruijne-Proos was friends with Sluijters. She also took lessons from him around 1914. Mien was married to civil engineer Marinus Floris de Bruijne. The couple was active in the Rotterdam art scene and maintained a long-term friendship with Jan and Greet Sluijters. Over the years they collected much of his work.
