I was blown away to see quotes from people I adore and admire like Stevie Nicks, Greta Gerwig, Shonda Rhimes, Phoebe Bridgers, Natalie Maines, Kenny Chesney, and Lucian Grainge. 30. A kiss as comfort

Callum wakes to an empty bed.

The bedroom is dark, that hanging stillness of the hours between late and early, hidden in creeping quiet. Moonlight washes across the mattress, sheets kicked down to the end of the bed and tangled around his ankles. Air wafts across his bare torso, cooling sweat in the night wind.

The balcony door is open.

He pulls his legs from the snaring sheets and slips outside. Kyle is leaning against the railing, his head tilted back at the rising crescent moon. His stance is casual, but the line of his shoulders is stiff, halfway to his ears, and his fingers grip white-knuckled at the railing.

“Again?” Callum murmurs, sliding into the sliver of space between Kyle and the corner. His hand lands on top of Kyle’s, thumb rubbing at tense tendons.

Kyle lets out a shuddering breath.

It alone is an answer.

Callum cannot do much—not enough—but he can curve arms around rigid shoulders and press lips to freckled skin. He can offer the comfort of closeness and care, a shield against memory and fear. He can stand beside Kyle under a waning moon, until the night wind blows them both back inside.
