“Okay, well…” Chase started “First I need you to grab a pan, put it on the stove and turn the heat on halfway.” Chase walked over to the counter and grabbed a bottle of olive oil. “We’re gonna need this as a base to fry the shrimp so it’ll be all good and… stuff. Also these shrimp are de-vained so we don’t have to do the dirty work.” Chase walked back over and handed Karina the bottle. “Ya’ think you can do that?”

Karina blinked, taking a few seconds to take in his instructions. It sounded like a lot at first, but once it was broken down... Pan, stove, heat, oil. That’s all it was really. She nodded in affirmation, taking the bottle of olive oil off the boy. “Right... I think I got it.”

She looked around the room, wondering where the pans were kept. None of the cupboards were labelled, but it would make sense to keep pans by the stove, right? She opened a couple of cupboards before she found one stocked with pans and took a medium sized one out, hoping that would suffice. Setting it on top of the stove, she inspected the controls for heat. This is where it usually went wrong when she was cooking for herself... She usually put it on the highest heat, hoping that would make it cook quicker since she was too lazy to wait. But he’d said half, so with a sigh, she turned the dial up to about halfway.

“Is that okay?” she asked her mentor, wanting to make sure everything was set up before the olive oil was put in.

Ohoho, she was quite the curious one, wasn’t she? He couldn’t tell if she really didn’t know–a problem he was more than willing to rectify with a quick correction on the acronym, but…

The use of the word meme of course, made that very unlikely. If anything, he was more annoyed by the accusation he was meme trash offensive. Still, he lazily tapped out his replies and, after they were sent out, laid back against his bed and considered getting popcorn.

Phone dropped and snacks dancing in his head, he had paused: eyeing his thin stomach as if questioning the wisdom of a snack. He sucked his gut in, smoothed down his loose shirt over it, then let out all that air in a heavy sigh, blowing a bit of hair out of his face.

No snack, then.

Karina smirked at his responses. He was funny, she had to give him that. But she needed to find a way to bother him. Now that she’d started, she had to find something that made him tick, even just a little bit. She may be lazy, but she could be stubborn.

He seemed opposed to her use of the word memes, however, so maybe that was somewhere to start...

Idle Annoyance || Open

Charles rolled his eyes at the girl claiming she didn’t know such a basic part of what a library was. Honestly, the only way he could fathom her being so ignorant was if she had never gone to one before and somehow avoided all media where the same such rule was shown. Though it would still be utterly ridiculous even if that were the case.

“I’m sure,” he drawled, propping his own head up on a hand, expression thoroughly unimpressed.This girl, whoever she was, seemed vaguely familiar, perhaps someone from a class or two of his? Her mention of the history class he himself took helped enforce the feeling of familiarity. Not that it helped him actually remember her name at all however, he hardly bothered with memorizing the names of his peers. In the end, they were all just different levels of annoying.

“I fail to see how you struggle to focus on that,” he scoffed quietly, closing his eyes. “It’s hardly anything more than memorization, something that becomes even more exceptionally easier when broken down.” It was so easy in his eyes, simple and logical. Though he thought it as pointless as he thought it easy, it having no bearings on what he had planned for his future.

Opening his eyes, Charles glanced over at the textbook the girl had with her. “What of it is causing you difficulties?” He questioned after a moment, unsure as to why he was doing it. It’d just prolong his interaction and annoyance with her after all. Perhaps he was procrastinating from him own studies? He certainly wasn’t eager to look at his chemistry textbook, at the very least.

The boy appeared to be irritated with her for no reason at all... Unless it bothered him that much that she’d been muttering to herself? Either way, Karina didn’t care. It didn’t bother her in the slightest if she came across as annoying... And seeing somebody getting annoyed only made her want to irritate them further.

“Memorising it would be easy if I could focus on reading more than three words at a time,” she said with a sigh, pushing the book away as if the content simply being near her was cause for stress. She ran her fingers through her hair, pushing it back out of her face. Her fingers always tugged on the knots that she couldn’t be bothered brushing out when she did this.

What was causing her difficulty? Karina only had to think about her response for a short second. “It’s so boring. I can’t concentrate on something that doesn’t interest me in the slightest.” It was so ridiculous that it was compulsory to take a history class. This stuff would be of no benefit to her at any point in time...

She glanced over at his textbook. “Chemistry, huh? I think you’re in my class.”

Not Paid Enough || Karina & Sebastian

He thought he was getting paid for this.  It was probably the only reason he signed up for the tutoring thing.  Imagine his surprise when they thanked him for volunteering to help the underachievers at the school “reach their full potential” or some bullshit like that.  He was getting tutored, too, so what exactly did that make him?  This was so dumb.

But still, he couldn’t let this girl go untutored, and as much as he wanted to back out of his commitment, he knew he had to see it through.  That was the only reason he was at the library at six o’clock at night, his modern world history book in front of him along with his class notes.  At least he really liked the subject.  History was that dark horse of a subject that Sebastian kind of grew to love.  Pretty useless in the long run, but still enjoyable to learn about. 

He sat by himself for now, waiting for the girl to come along.  He was pretty busy on his phone when he scrolled to the top of the web page he was looking at. 6:03.  He looked at his phone messages once again.  Yup, they had agreed on 6 o’clock at the library.  He’d wait ten more minutes.  If she didn’t show, he’d just leave.  There was no reason to waste time.

It was exactly 6 o’clock when Karina woke from her nap, her head tilting to the side so her bleary eyes could read the digital clock beside her bed. She vaguely remembered agreeing to meet her tutor at this time... Begrudgingly, she rose from the bed with a huge yawn. The not-so-exciting prospect of history awaiting her didn’t exactly motivate her to move any more quickly.

It was nearly ten past by the time she arrived in the library. Nine minutes wasn’t the worst for Karina... Occasionally she’d show up for classes half an hour late without even any far-fetched excuse to back her up. This mainly happened with subjects she didn’t enjoy... such as Modern World History. That may be the reason she had fallen behind with the content, and had to be assigned a tutor to try and drill it into her before finals. 

As she entered, she saw a dark-haired boy sat alone with a history textbook in front of him, looking visibly bored. She walked over to him, assuming this boy to be her tutor.

“Are you Sebastian?”

Karina wasn’t used to being checked up on. Her mother had always been too busy running a store to check how she was getting on with her schoolwork, which is why she’d let her grades slip from the As she was capable of to the Cs that required so much less effort. Her mother had complained for a few weeks after the transition, but soon ceased soon after she realised her words had no effect on her daughter and that Karina was still at least passing her classes.

But after meeting Nurse Yamada, things at Harvest Academy changed for the blue-haired girl. Miss Yamada wasn’t one of her teachers -- she didn’t take Health Science. But after being forced to visit the school nurse one afternoon to tackle her “fatigue problems” (they thought she’d been sleeping through classes for some sort of health reason, rather than pure boredom), she found someone that had actually gone further than their job required them to. Miss Yamada had checked up on her regularly after Karina confessed that she just didn’t feel like doing work, gently prodding her to keep her grades up.

With finals quickly approaching, the teenager had been called into Nurse Yamada’s office for an “informal chat”. Karina guessed this meant a lecture on studying.

“I swear... I’ve been studying,” she drawled, hoping the teacher hadn’t seen her napping on the grass outside the other day. She had been trying to study... But the weather was simply too nice to waste time working when she could be enjoying it.

Chase was busy preparing the necessary ingredients for a dish that he was gonna teach someone named Karina to cook; he was pretty sure she was in his chemistry class, purely from the roll call. Chase had just put everything together when the doors swung open. “Oh, hey! ‘You Karina?” 

Chase looked at Karina, a little bit anxious to cook. “It’s fine, I’m always down to help people cook… well usually at least.” Chase couldn’t help but laugh a little, seeing as there were some people that he wouldn’t be caught dead helping them cook. “Well, complicated?” Chase took a moment. “No, not really, it’s fairly easy to make, and once you get it down, you can pretty much cook anything seafood. Today we’re making shrimp scampi.” Chase pointed back at the stove and the bag of shrimp and other ingredients. “It’s fairly quick to make and it doesn’t take that much effort. You ready?”

“Yeah, that’s me,” she confirmed, not feeling the need to ask whether he was Chase or not, since it seemed pretty obvious. He looked to have been busily preparing their work surface in the time she’d taken to arrive. Thankfully, he hadn’t been the type to berate her for being slightly late, seeming only eager to begin cooking.

Karina looked warily round at all the ingredients the chef had set out. There looked to be a lot of them... Would there be a lot of multi-tasking involved? At least she’d have Chase to help her keep track, if there was, but dishes where you had to multi-task were the ones she usually failed miserably at. The phrase “doesn’t take that much effort” comforted her, though. The less effort it required, the better. And Karina trusted his assurance that it wouldn’t be too complex, although their standards for complicated may be slightly different.

She nodded in response to his question. “Yeah, ready. Um... so where do we start?” She glanced round at everything he had ready.

Idle Annoyance || Open

The school Library was hardly impressive, in Charles opinion. While it certainly had a fair share of books, few of them were particularly interesting or even vaguely entertaining. Honestly, it was hardly a place he preferred spending any sort of free time in.

Still, it was here that Charles found himself, a text book in front of him as he studied. With exams coming up, he had to ensure he knew what was needed to score high. And this would’ve been such an easy task to do, if he wasn’t forced to study in the library since his dorm roommates were being noisy. Not that the library turned out be be much better, as he heard another person mumbling near by.

“You do realize this is meant to be a quiet place, don’t you?” He said after a moment, waiting to see if the person stopped. When they didn’t he couldn’t stop the instigating comment from slipping out. “What on earth is your brainless mumbling about?” Not that he even cared.

It was so irritating that it was mandatory to take a history subject. Although she’d chosen what she hoped to be the easiest one, but the content of Modern World History Studies just didn’t seem to stick in her head. History in general was so boring, and Karina struggled to concentrate on subjects she was actually interested in, let alone one that she’d successfully slept through most of the classes throughout the year.

But with finals coming up, the blue-haired girl needed to at least pass the subject. With a textbook in front of her and her head resting in one hand -- partially keeping her hair back, partially forcing her eyes open -- she attempted to read the passages. After restarting a single paragraph four or five times due to losing concentration, she began to whisper it to herself to force her to take the information in.

She made it around halfway down before she was interrupted and lost focus again. Looking up at the boy who was talking to her with a glare, she realised she vaguely recognised him from some of her classes.

“Wasn’t aware,” Karina said, her head sinking more heavily onto her hand. She never came to the library -- how was she meant to know it was supposed to be quiet? Better for sleeping, though... She’d have to keep that in mind. “I’m trying to focus on Modern World History Studies. As you can see, it’s not working.” She had yet to turn the page she was on since arriving half an hour ago.

Cooking had never been something that came easily to Karina. There was always so much to do at once and keep an eye on, and she often got bored and wandered off, only to hear the smoke alarms going off twenty minutes later. In her lifetime she’d probably prepared more failed dishes than successful ones. Anything quick and simple was fine: rice balls, toast and fries, she could usually manage. As a general rule of thumb, if it required more than one ingredient, she would struggle. So she thought it was finally time she made some effort to improve her skill.

She’d advertised for someone to teach her how to cook, and a guy called Chase had responded. She knew him vaguely from her chemistry class, but she knew little more than that he was her age and he was good at cooking. That was all she needed to know to accept him as a tutor.

Arriving at their arranged meeting place -- where cooking club usually took place -- only slightly late, she approached him with a small smile.

“Hey,” she said in greeting. “Thanks for this, I guess. We aren’t starting complicated, are we?” Even when she was doing something completely willingly, she struggled to keep the hint of sleepiness out of her voice, and hoped he wouldn’t be able to sense it.

Julius didn’t even blink when he got a text from an unknown number, referencing something he said in the column. He wasn’t stupid, he’d figured something like this would happen. If anything he was surprised it took this long for him to get one. 

If anything, people wouldn’t be at all surprised to know he’d quite willingly tell his preference if he had one. While some refused to believe it, Julius was a virgin. Yes, it was who he who lit the black flame candle and summoned the Sanderson sisters!

Mm. Hocus Pocus was a great movie. Bette Midler’s voice filled him with unadulterated joy. If he didn’t adore his own singing voice so much, he’d almost wish he could sing like her.

Fortunately, he did so adore hearing himself sing. If only choir wasn’t such a diseased pile of loserdom, he may have joined. Alas, it was in fact full of maggots.

Oh, and he was sure the club members had bugs on them as well.

But, back to the task at hand.

Karina had barely set her phone down when her phone dinged three times, signalling three messages from the number she had saved as Julius’. She smiled at his responses. He didn’t seem too fazed... He rarely did, even when receiving the most peculiar questions in his advice column. But the blue-haired girl was determined to get some sort of reaction from him.

Pausing, Karina thought for a second, considering what her next message should be. She was still testing the waters a little, to see if he would give her anything to work on.

[ To: Julius ] so do you have a dominance kink [ To: Julius ] bondage? discipline? submission? [ To: Julius ] wait what does the m stand for in bdsm [ To: Julius ] memes? [ To: Julius ] yeah you’re probably into that too

She purposely sent these as a series of texts instead of just one, hoping the continuous notifications would be of some annoyance to him as well.

The girl…

Didn’t really reply to what Candace was saying, not really. Reminding herself to breathe, she  tried to focus on calming down. She wouldn’t be able to talk to this girl and, hopefully, convince her not to tell the principal, if she was bawling her eyes out so much she could hardly breathe. Taking a deep breathe and focusing on keeping her breathing steady for a moment, she didn’t reply right away.

Finally, as if the girl’s question had only started to make sense, she nodded. While she was still crying, the tears streaming readily down her cheeks, it wasn’t as… full body, sobby as before. Later, when Candace was calmer, she’d find it funny that these cute girls kept walking into her bedroom and it wasn’t anything like how she’d like them to be there.

Generally speaking, that involved more smooching

Generally speaking, she hasn’t even smooched one girl. Besides family on the cheek, but that obviously didn’t even begin to count.

“Uh…. yeah, that’s right…” She nodded, gripping each arm tight with the opposite hand, her arms across her body in some sort of comforting grip. Candace was eyeing the bunny like she wanted to take her back, but also seemed very wary. What if this girl didn’t let her have Usagi back? Candace figured it would be very easy to keep her things from her, since she didn’t have it in her to fight over anything, even when she had every right to stick up for herself.

 "She… she’s…“ Then, as the effort to lie was too much for her to emotionally handle, she looked straight up at the ceiling as her cheeks flushed further.

"I got… special permission, from the principal…?”

Karina walked further into the room without needing permission, her arms sinking slightly in to the rabbit’s soft fur. It didn’t seem to mind her touch, seeming content to sit where she held it, wiggling its nose at its surroundings. It was clearly very used to being handled, so the stranger must have had it a while. Karina wondered just how long this girl -- seemingly shy and innocent -- had been breaking the rules for.

She sat down on one of the beds, unsure if it was the girl’s or not but once more not waiting for any approval. Setting the bunny on her lap, she continued to run her fingers through its fur. So soft...

“No you didn’t,” she replied in a bored tone, calling the girl out on her lie as soon as it left her lips. First of all, the principal wouldn’t give special permission for anybody to have a pet on campus due to the health and hygiene regulations, whatever that meant. Secondly, the girl’s guilt was apparent on her face with no attempt at hiding it. Her body language told her everything she needed to know: who stared straight upwards when they were being honest?

“My name is Karina,” she offered after a second’s pause. “And relax. I won’t tell anybody about... Usagi?”

Why anybody would think it was a good idea to publish their personal phone number in the school’s newspaper, Karina would never know. She didn’t personally know the author of the advice column. There was nobody called Julius in any of her classes, as far as she was aware. Or maybe she just didn’t pay too much attention... Either way, she was fairly certain she’d never met the guy. Meaning there was no chance he could have her phone number...

... Meaning it was time for Karina to have a little fun.

She’d read his advice column, of course, if it could even be called that. She picked up each edition of the newspaper when it was published, mainly to see if her friend Sierra had written anything, but she usually had a flick through everything that was in there. Most articles she didn’t bother reading -- too many words, too little pictures -- but the advice column was concise and arranged easily for her to read without growing bored. She did like the guy’s sense of humour. Hopefully, he wouldn’t be too offended by hers.

Sure, it was immature. But anything fun that she could do lying on her stomach on her bed with her phone in her hands, requiring no movement than that of her thumbs, she welcomed. So she positioned herself comfortably and began to tap out a message to the number she’d found in the newspaper.

Of Bunnies and Panic || Karina and Candace

She knew it was against school rules, but… when it had originally come time to leave home for school, she didn’t have it in her to leave Usagi behind. For a while, she had the dorm to herself and needn’t worry about anyone discovering her pet, but… of course it couldn’t last.

From the moment Julius had been reassigned dorms, been placed with her, she should have known things could only go down hill. The good news was, he hadn’t minded that Usagi was there or, well, he didn’t particularly care, at all, in anyway. Usually by the time he got to the dorm, late into the night, he passed out soon after. 

Today, however, was when a fully formed turd hit the fan. She had let Usagi out to hop around, stretch her legs, get some exercise… and then, after she gave the bunny a snack and finished playing with her and petting her which had taken a good while, she had sat crisscrossed on the ground at the end of her bed, Usagi beside her, to work on an assignment for her history class.

She hadn’t even noticed that Julius was heading out, let alone that he forgot to close the door. Instead, she was too absorbed in her work. It wasn’t until she reached down to pet usagi that she realized anything was wrong.

Usagi wasn’t even there. Startled, she looked up from her writing pad and caught sight of the door. She had jumped to her feet, looking al over the room three times over. her hair started coming loose from it’s braids and the room fell into an awful disarray through her frantic searching. Finally, she had to concede. She could only hope no one else found Ussagi–especially not a teacher or anyone from student council–as she hurried for the door, picking up a bag of treats.

And that’s when an admittedly girl walked in.

Candace had froze, staring at her, then, all of a sudden like someone had flipped a switch, she started sobbing from sheer adrenaline.

“P…puh…please don’t tell anyone!” Came her panicked outburst “I can’t lose Usagi! P-please, I’ll do anything!”

Walking was Karina’s preferred form of exercise, if she was to choose one. She didn’t particularly enjoy any form of physical exertion. But walking required minimal effort and didn’t work up a sweat -- unless you were extremely unfit, which, thanks to this school’s accursed mandatory physical education, Karina was not -- and allowed her to scope out potential napping spots in future. She always found herself lacking in places to sleep in peace when she didn’t feel like going to class. Once teachers found her in one place, they were always sure to check that place again the next time she was absent.

As the blue-haired girl passed by the unisex dorms, hoping to visit the cafeteria, movement by the entrance caught her eye. The door had been wedged open to allow the sunshine and fresh air into the dorms, and just on the threshold, a brown ball of fluff sat stationary, wiggling its nose at the world outside.

Curiously, Karina walked over to investigate. As she’d thought, a bunny looked back at her, seeming as interested in her as she was in it. Pets were banned at Harvest Academy, although Karina had always wanted a little kitten of her own. But it looked as though somebody had managed to sneak an illegal rabbit into their dorm. Quickly looking round for teachers, the blue-haired girl scooped up the bunny and entered the unisex dorm to search for its owner. 

Four of the five dorm rooms were shut, so unless she had discovered an extremely intelligent rabbit capable of opening doors, she chose the fifth as the best option for finding the rule-breaker.

As she appeared in the doorway, she met the eyes of an unfamiliar girl, who looked to be in a state of extreme panic. Within a second, she’d burst into tears. Karina hated when people cried. She never knew how to react, so she just watched the girl with a slightly uncomfortable expression.

“Uh... Usagi?” She stroked the rabbit absent-mindedly. “Is that its name?”

Nobody really expected Karina to have a job. She was reluctant to do most mandatory things that the academy offered, so why would she bother picking up an unnecessary responsibility? The truth was, she needed money. Her mother was struggling enough as it was back at home, even more so since Karina had left and her mother had lost her only other employee. So she couldn’t ask Hazel for spending money; despite acting as though she was indifferent towards her mother’s struggle, she did care, and wouldn’t purposely add to it when she could earn her own to spend around campus.

So she picked up a job as a cashier at the Snack Counter. Being a cashier was easy. She already had experience as one from working at her mother’s General Store. There was very little effort involved: if a customer came in, she would get them what they asked for and cash it off -- albeit rather slowly -- and then the person would leave, with not much more involved. The rest of the time, she was free to sleep, her head resting on her folded arms atop of the counter.

Hearing the door open and close, Karina blearily blinked at the customer who had entered. Sighing, she straightened up. Hopefully they wouldn’t take too long... They had interrupted a good nap.

“Hello,” she said, stifling a yawn. “Welcome to the Snack Counter. How may I help you today?” This routine was well rehearsed, but spoken in a completely monotonous voice and a tone coloured with obvious boredom.

For many people, the idea of a project with an assigned partner was something to be dreaded. But when Karina heard the teacher utter these words to their class, she was actually contented. This meant there was a chance she would be paired with somebody who was willing to do all the work for her. And it looked as though she’d struck lucky when the professor called out her partner... Gill Hamilton. He was a younger student, but seemed very keen in class, always getting good grades and answering questions correctly. He appeared to be the perfect partner for the lazy blue-haired girl who cared little for the topic of the halogens.

It wasn’t that Karina didn’t know the content, however. She’d always had a knack for science subjects, finding the knowledge easy to remember and apply. If she was forced to, she could recite everything on the syllabus for the Group 7 topic. She simply didn’t care. She was too lazy to write anything down, or to properly structure a project. Hopefully, Gill would be useful to overcome this.

They’d arranged to meet in the library after classes had finished for the day. Karina had suggested outside, a much more preferable place to nap, but apparently they had to research or something. It took her a while to locate their meeting place. It was the first time she’d visited the library since joining the academy. Spotting Gill already sat at one of the tables with a book open in front of him, she wandered over to him and sat down on one of the uncomfortable wooden chairs.
