It was a night spent endlessly worrying but the sun had finally risen and started to bathe the room in warm hues of light, growing to the clean white rays that now streamed through the window. You still hadn’t stirred and Cas was contemplating waking you, his hand hovering just over your shoulder when you finally began to shift on the couch. He drew it back and watched with strenuous anticipation and heavily furrowed brow as your eyes opened.
You didn’t try to sit up. You knew something was extremely wrong, and the angel beside you watched with grief as you raised a shaky hand and looked at your palm, which was marred with a deep crimson gash. He watched the heavy realization settle over you, the corners of his mouth turning down in a frown. You lowered your hand and rested it back on your stomach, and finally turned to look at him. “Castiel?” His blue eyes seemed to be glistening a little. You’d never seen a fellow angel cry, but you knew that’s what it was. “What happened to me? How—why am I injured? All of me… I don’t feel right.”
He hung his head for a moment, trying to find the right words to lessen the blow, but he knew it was futile. “I’m so sorry,” he said. “We—we tried to get to you in time but…”
“My grace?”
Cas nodded gravely. “I’m sorry. I wish we could have prevented this. We tried but—it was too late when we got to you.”
You turned away from him and stared up at the ceiling for a moment, processing all the new sensations that were washing over you. It was overwhelming. “It’s not your fault,” you said sincerely.
Cas started to rise to his feet. “I’ll go tell Sam and Dean you’re awake.”
But your hand shot out and grabbed onto his sleeve and he froze, taking in your wide eyes and fearful expression. Neither of you were expecting the electric shock that run through your arms. “Don’t leave me alone. Please.” You quickly released your grip on him, but your gaze stayed fixed with his blue eyes.
Cas sank back down in the chair he’d pulled up beside the couch. He nodded. “Of course. Sam and Dean can wait.”
You pulled in a deep breath and let it out slowly, marveling again at all the new feelings you were experiencing. “Thank you,” you said, settling back down against the throw pillow beneath your head. “If I had to wake up without my grace, I am at least glad to have you beside me, Castiel.”
The angel felt a warmth blooming in his chest and it spilled outwards. He gulped. “I’m glad to be here for you. And I promise I won’t abandon you, no matter what.”
