He could hear the tremble in your voice. "I'm right here. It's okay. I think the power surge blew something..."

"I—I know it's stupid but... I'm not a big a fan of the dark."

"After what you've been through, that makes perfect sense," his voice came from somewhere close by. "Don't move. I'll come to you okay?"

"O—okay..." You heard him shuffling in the dark and then felt his arm bump into yours. To your surprise, his hand landed on your forearm and then traced down to gently take your hand.

"It's gonna be okay."

And with him holding your hand, you believed him.

Warning: ANGST! Avast, ye have been warned! Turn back if angst is not what ye seek! Here there be heartbreak! Dean watched as you shifted on the pillow beside him and rolled toward his weight and warmth. His hand gently made its way under your t-shirt and ran up the silky soft curve of your spine, finding the edge of your shoulder blade before trailing back down and resting just above your waistband. You sighed sleepily and smiled, your eyes blinking open to reveal the rich hues of your irises, glowing in the morning light. "Good morning," you whispered.

Dean's mouth curved in a boyish, content smile. "Good morning, Mrs. Winchester," he said, his deep voice resonant in his chest.

You moved even closer to him, pressing your body up against his and tucking yourself under his chin. You pressed a kiss to the front of his throat and electricity lit up his skin. "Are you going to apologize?" you asked teasingly.

"And what exactly am I supposed to apologize for?" he asked, wrapping his arms around you and rolling to his back, pulling you on top of him.

You laughed lightly and leaned up to look into his green eyes. His hands gripped the swell of your hips. "For waking me up," you said.

His eyebrows lifted. "I'll make it up to you," he said, his hand finding its way under your shirt again.

You smiled broadly. "You will?"

"Of course I will," he said, his hand combing into your sleep-tousled hair, pulling your lips down to his. He captured you in a slow, heated kiss.

You pulled back only slightly. Your eyes flickered between his. But suddenly your expression turned sad. His brow furrowed in an unspoken question. "I miss moments like this more than anything," you said.

His confusion increased, tightened his features. "What do you mean?" he asked.

"Dean—" your hand landed flat in the center of his chest. "—we both know I'm still gone."

"Hey!"

Suddenly, Dean was awake, gasping for air in the front passenger seat of the Impala and Sam's hand was gripping his shoulder. His brother's face was coated with worry.

"You were asleep and then all of a sudden—" Sam broke off, his hand returning to the wheel from Dean's shoulder.

Dean mopped at the sweat beading up on his face. His heart still wouldn't slow. His stomach was sinking, heavy. He gulped at the tight constriction in his throat.

"Are you good?" Sam asked, that cavern still fixed between his worried brows.

Dean shook his head. His jaw clenched. "No."

"Who's taking out the garbage?" Sam asked, eyeing it sitting next to the threshold.

"You do it. I always do it," Dean answered, not even looking up from his laptop. He sipped his coffee.

"Oh, you do it one time and now you've done it every time?" Sam scoffed.

"Hey, you asked a question and I answered," Dean retorted. "You're taking it out."

You breezed into the kitchen, laughing, having heard the conversation from the hall. You poured a steaming mug of coffee."You two are cute together. Has anyone ever told you?" you teased them, smirking as you breathed in the steam, cupping your hands around the warmth of the mug.

Sam and Dean exchanged a look. "You're doing it," they both said at the same time, shooting you smug smiles.

Your mouth dropped open. "I—Wh—?!"

Cas suddenly appeared in the doorway. "What's the matter?"

"Cas!" you said warmly. "Could you pleeeeease please do me a huge favor?"

He tilted his head in a question.

You pointed to the full garbage bag by his feet. "Take that out?" You flashed him your widest smile. "You're the best!"

The angel frowned, but he dutifully collected the bag and disappeared with it.

"How'd you do that? He never would have done that if I'd asked," Dean said.

"I'm cuter than you," you retorted.

"I second that," Sam agreed. You grinned.

The thunder rolled outside and there was a bright flash of lightning. You smiled to yourself. Lightning always made you think of Cas, the way the lights flickered and shattered when he first landed in your life.

There was a knock on the front door and you trudged over to peek out through the blinds.

Cas was standing on your front porch, looking patient and calm albeit covered with water droplets from the downpour. You rushed to open the door.

“Cas?”

His face lit up when he saw you. “Hi. Sorry to show up unexpectedly.”

You motioned for him to step in out of the rain and wind. “It’s okay. is everything alright? Are you okay?” you asked, suddenly worried.

“Oh, yes. Yes, everything is fine,” he said. His blue eyes were resting on your face and he didn’t seem to want to look away. Cas suddenly forgot why he had come.

A blush rose in your face. “Umm. So, what’s up?”

Cas started, like he had just received an electric shock. “Right. Yes.” he dug a hand into his trench coat pocket and pulled out a white cord. “I, uhh, found your phone charger,” he said, handing it to you with a smile.

You laughed. “Oh my god! I thought it was lost forever. I was just about to order a new one,” you said. “Thanks, Cas! Where did you find it?”

He tilted his head, and shrugged off your thanks. “It was under the seat in the Impala.”

“Damn. I even looked in there. Must have missed it I guess.” Your eyes met his, so shockingly blue, looking even darker indigo in the low light. “You came all the way here for this?” you asked.

Cas shrugged. “I suppose so,” he said, giving you a shy smile.

“Well, you better come in and keep me company for a bit then,” you said. “Make it worth your while.” You hoped the angel didn’t see your face color pink as you led him inside.

"I wasn't expecting to have to argue with you, Sam. I thought you, of all people, would understand why I have to do this."

His brow was furrowed deeply, with a cavern of worry lines in his forehead. "I do understand. Completely. I just—disagree. You're going to get yourself killed." He sighed heavily and took a few hesitant steps toward you. "I wanted revenge after what happened to Jess. I chased after it. Blindly. And the only thing it gave me was a heaping pile of regrets and things I wish I could change. I don't want the same thing to happen to you and I definitely don't want to see you seriously hurt or killed. There are other ways to find peace," he said more gently.

And if anyone could talk you down off that ledge, it was Sam. Sam and his fucking soft kaleidoscope eyes and worry lines. You might as well put your bag of gear back into your closet when he was looking at you like that... “I’m sure Y/N will be down in a minute,” Dean said. “Take a seat.” Truthfully he was grateful for this opportunity to scope out your date. “So,” he said, taking a big bite of pizza. “What are your plans for the evening?”

Your date sank into the couch and peered at Dean. “I don’t know. Maybe dinner or something.” They shifted a little and stretched casually. “I’m just looking forward to the end of it, if you know what I mean.” They added a laugh at the end of the sentence and glanced around the room impatiently.

Dean’s eyes narrowed and bored into the person sitting across from him, who clearly had no plan, and no desire to act like they weren’t just interested in a booty call.

“Are you fucking kidding me?” Dean spat.

Your date’s head snapped around to take in the angry and perplexed expression on Dean’s face. “W-what?” they replied, feeling more than a little hesitant due to the stare they were getting.

“Do you have any idea about the chance you’ve got here? There is no one else on this planet like Y/N. And your plan is ‘maybe dinner or something’ and then trying your hardest to get laid? There is no way in HELL I’m letting you take Y/N out. You don’t deserve anything more than a boot up your ass.”

Your date’s mouth dropped open. Clearly they were now regretting what they had said, but there was no way to take it back. They were nearly being crushed by the waves of anger and annoyance radiating off of Dean. “Oh, I–”

Dean stopped up and dusted off his hands. “No, no. You’re done. Let’s go,” he said.

Your date didn’t move and just continued to stare back wide-eyed.

“Now. Get. Out. Before I deliver that boot.”

Your date scrambled up and Dean followed them to the front door, practically slamming it on them in his haste resolve the situation. Now he’d just have to think of a way to tell you that you weren’t going out tonight… at least not with that jackass.

He grabbed the keys to the Impala and sat down, waiting anxiously for you to appear.

You were pouring another cup of coffee when Cas wandered in. He was looking at you with some meaning behind his eyes, but you couldn't immediately decipher it.

"What?" you prompted him, raising the mug to your lips.

"Are you—um—" he shifted anxiously. "Are you alright?" he asked.

You were struck by the question. "Fine. Why?"

Cas's brow furrowed. "Did you—you must have—Did you have a nightmare?" he asked.

You stared back at him, perplexed. "...How'd you know that?" you asked softly, cupping both hands around the warm ceramic of your mug.

"I could tell by your heartbeat," he said, then realized that perhaps you were now going to be completely weirded out that he was listening to your heartbeat in the first place. "S—sorry," he said abruptly.

But you were only looking back at him with curiosity. "You listen to my heartbeat?"

"Only when you're sleeping," Cas said quickly.

You laughed lightly and your face lit up. "Why?"

Cas looked puzzled. "How else am I supposed to know whether you're alright? As an angel, I suppose I still find human sleep very disturbing. It makes you vulnerable."

You smiled at him serenely and took another sip of your coffee. "It was just a bad dream. I'm alright. And don't apologize. I think you're sweet, Cas."

And you swore Castiel, Angel of the Lord, was blushing. Prompt: "You listen to my heartbeat?" / "Only when you're sleeping." / "Why?" / "How else am I supposed to know whether you're alright?"

A/N: Sam x Artist!Reader is something I didn't know I needed until this moment...

You could sense his tall frame appearing in the doorway behind you and immediately paused in your brushstroke. "Sam..." you said, turning to look at him over your shoulder.

He gave you a small smile and crossed the threshold. "Yeah?"

"You're making me nervous just standing back there!" you said. "Did you need something?"

He laughed lightly and sank down on the spare chair in your studio (which really only ever held half-drunk mugs of coffee or cold tea). "Why do you think me stopping in means I need something?" he questioned you with a quirk of his eyebrow.

"Well, why else would you be stopping?" you countered, correcting a blob on the canvas caused by his appearance.

"Just to see you," he said warmly. "Besides, I love watching you work."

You felt a flush in your cheeks and turned back to look at him skeptically. "You know, there's a reason people use the expression 'like watching paint dry' to be boring..."

"You're quite literally creating something from nothing in front of me. I'm amazed how you take those little tubes of paint and somehow bring something to life. It's—incredible. Usually when I'm watching something appear from nothing I have to worry about it taking my head off. This is... very different," he said.

You gave him a fond look, softening at his sweet words. "Alright. You can stay. But don't distract me! I really need to get some work done on this painting today."

"You won't even know I'm here," Sam said with a smile, giving you another admiring look.

Your face flushed again. Too late for that...

The knock on the door of your motel room startled you and you tossed the bloody washcloth down in the sink, turning away from the sight of the bruises and swelling on your cheekbone and the gash in your forehead, now secured with two butterfly bandages.

Dean was standing on the other side of the door looking worried, a pizza box in his hands. "Hey," he said. His eyes drifted over your face, taking in the injuries again from the hunt that hadn't turned out how any of you had hoped. His chest ached and anger burned in his stomach. "Just wanted to see if you needed any help getting patched up," he said, moving past you as you stepped back to let him in. "Looks like you've got it covered though."

You still hadn't said anything and Dean's brow creased heavily.

"You okay?" he asked.

You shook your head, suppressing the scream of emotion welling up in your chest as best you could. "Nope."

He nodded knowingly. "...Yeah. Want some pizza?"

"Yep."

With that, the two of you settled down at the little table. You were aware that Dean was watching you carefully, but as time went on both of you took comfort in each other even in silence. The TV droned in the background. Tomorrow would be another day. You win some, you lose some. With Dean at your side, you knew everything would turn out alright one way or another.

Dean was in the middle of the sentence, but Cas didn't care. He walked away as soon as you entered the room. His cobalt blue eyes were narrowed and fixed on the cut on your cheekbone and the bruise surrounding it.

"Cas! What the hell? I was talking t—"

"Shut up, Dean," Cas growled over his shoulder, not pulling his eyes away from you. You were peering at him in vague confusion, your eyes a little wide and surprised.

"Cas, what's—?"

"Who did this to you?" he asked, studying the injury to the side of your face.

"What?"

"Who hurt you?" he growled in a low voice. "No one hurts you and gets away with it. Tell me what happened and I'll deal with it," he said, determined.

"Oh. No, no one. It's from a tree branch when we were running back to the car after the last case. It's nothing," you said.

Cas' head tilted slightly. "Are you sure?"

You laughed. "Yes, I'm sure. It's really from a branch. I'm fine."

Cas relaxed, his shoulders dropping. He lifted two fingers and gently pressed them to your forehead and the cut and bruise vanished instantly.

"Thanks," you said, giving him a small smile.

"Of course. I'm sorry I didn't know about it sooner."

You shook your head. "It was nothing. Really."

"I never want you to hurt," he insisted.

You gave him a fond look. "I appreciate that but, uhh—I'm not sure it's practical in our line of work," you said.

"Perhaps. But that's why I'm here." Prompt: "No on hurts you and gets away with it."

"I know the timing is all wrong and the circumstances are all wrong, but I can't shake the feeling that I was supposed to meet you this way," Sam said.

You opened your mouth to speak but the insistent look on his handsome face had the words dying on your tongue.

He pulled in a deep breath. "Can I see you again? Please?"

"Sam—I—it's too dangerous..."

"So, we'll be careful." His eyes searched your face and you wondered if he could see you caving. "Do you want to see me again? That's the only question and answer that matters," he said.

You gulped nervously but nodded. "Yes. Very much so, but—"

"No. No 'buts', okay? We'll figure it out. This is not an every day kind of feeling. I'm not going to just give up on it so easily."

You looked into his multifaceted eyes and the last bit of resistance you had crumbled away and you nodded. "Alright," you said softly.

A wide smile grew on Sam's face. "Alright?"

One grew on your lips to match his. "Alright," you laughed.

Sam swept into you and tugged you against him, wrapping you in an embrace that felt like the safest place in the world. Prompt: "Can I see you again?" / "It's too dangerous." / "We'll be careful. Do you want to see me again?" / "Yes. Very much so."

I know you all have been waiting for some longer writing from me for a bit, but due to what is happening in the US right now, a fascist regime going FULL fascist, I have a dearth of creative energy right now. Just trying to reconcile with the fact that what I am watching happen IS actually happening, takes most of my energy right now. I am fighting against feeling paralyzed and complete hopelessness and trying to take back my attention and strategize real action. As you can imagine, this is a very scary time. I am wrapped in some layers of privilege (white, citizenship, support system of family and friends, employed), but my identity and civil rights as a woman are under attack and I am very scared for people I love and care about who are part of the LGBTQ+ community, people of color, and for all under attack by this administration.

So, bear with me and check on each other. Hold onto your community and expand it as you can. Take small action every day if you are able. We will #resist. But please, be safe.
