So I posted this Anne with an E fic on Ao3 yesterday, but thought I would share it here as well. I haven’t written fan fiction in years but this show inspired me to start writing again. Rewatching Season 2, specifically episode 8, brought about this piece from Gilbert’s perspective. Enjoy!

As Gilbert turned to watch the bride make her grand entrance, he noticed a familiar flash of auburn appear across the aisle. Anne. A small smile began to creep across his face as he watched her gaze in wonder at Prissy. She smiled, just then, as the bride made her way toward the alter.

Anne adores all things beautiful. So, of course, one of her very favorite places to be is at a wedding. Gilbert never cared much for weddings, unless he knew the couple very well, and even then, they weren’t all that exciting. But he could see himself getting married once he was older. He could see himself with the love of his life. He could see her dressed all in white.

My S2 Shirbert Feels Checklist <3 (spoilers)

SLOW BURN DONE RIGHT

Despite the technically short screen time they have together, all of the foreshadowing just combines to build expectations - ‘I’d make a terrible wife’ (HA! says you anne, but gilbert would beg to disagree), the Life Mate vow (matched to my intellect, proponent of my happiness, friend of my heart, equal partners - everything screams gilbert, speaking off, I need a gif set of this with the said qualities of gil on one side and anne saying the life mate vow on the other), ‘no one would ever want to kiss me’ (oh honey), ‘it feels good to know what I want’, ‘remains to be seen’). All of the foreshadowing doesn’t just hint at a courtship or a girlish-boyish i-like-you, but a true marriage of minds and hearts, between equals. It’s such a high standard to set, that I can admit I’m not yet entirely satisfied with their relationship at the end of S2, but I eagerly await to be fulfilled.

How that lack of screentime together actually works for them. Gilbert’s middle name is ‘heart-eyes for Anne’, but his whole life doesn’t revolve her nor is it about getting her to notice him (though it may seem that way with all those heartfelt looks). Similarly Anne is the same. They have vocations and dreams outside of each other, which makes their relationship all the more sweet and genuine, since you’ll know that when they do come together, it’s because they truly choose to.

Anne’s fear and slight panic at how soon Gilbert might be leaving them, especially since he just got back, though she can’t adequately express herself (imagine that, an Anne without words), and her subsequent relief that he’ll be here to stay for just a little while longer.

Despite fighting with each other earlier, they choose to stand next to each other for Ms. Stacy’s electricity lesson, and their synchronicity.

THIS: GILBERT HAS SEEN ANNE IN THE EXACT SAME DRESS ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS (albeit with different hairstyles) AND YET HE REACTS THE SAME - with awe, a lovestruck expression, and wonder. He never gets tired of looking at her.

Not really related to Shirbert, but I love all of Anne’s hairstyles. My favorite one is the one where she sort of grows it out but not to the length that it can be braided that it looks like she’s wearing a red cap. She really does look like a pixie. And bangs suit her really well. I’m liking her new hairstyle better than her old one, iconic though it was. I mean if I’m like this gushing at all her adorableness, I can’t even imagine how Gilbert must feel. His heart must be goo right now, probably internally squeeing, SO!CUTE! all the time.

Them attending two weddings together - one where they are across from each other with a gaze connecting them, and one where they are side by side. Might the third one shown in the show be theirs?

Gilbert sincerely admires Anne, might now love her even, but is not blind to her faults (her lack of empathy sometimes, how the rivalry she feels causes her to act towards gilbert, the inadvertent gossiping, lack of tact). He doesn’t put her on a pedestal which makes it more real that he loves her as she is (though of course, they try to better each other) and not his ideal picture of her.

How Glibert considers the Cuthberts family and the significance of the Christmas dinner - Marilla may not have married John, but I’m glad she gets the chance to be the mother figure Gilbert never had.

Speaking of the above, the parallels between Marilla and John, as well as Anne and Gilbert (I positively cannot wait for Marilla to jump on the matchmaking bandwagon, which for now contains - Diana, Cole, Bash)

What I desperately hope for in S3 in terms of Shirbert (my overall AWAE S3 wishlist is quite longer):

The ‘rose scene’ in the books, Anne in all her Tatiana beauty at a recital, and Gilbert pocketing a fallen petal from her flower crown (NEAR!HIS!HEART!)

More family dinners, now including Mary, and eventually, hopefully, her son too

Anne and Gilbert finally becoming the good friends they were destined to be - of course, with all of the denials on Anne’s part, and Gilbert trying not to encroach on her space, as he truly wants to be her friend (you know despite and because of being in love with her), study sessions, walks to school and home, etc. you know, all the little things.

An introduction of some version of Roy Gardner? I’m interested to see what a jealous Gil looks like in AWEA. I’m sure as with all subverted tropes, Moira will handle it delicately and with justice.
