My school really pisses me off
For house singing we have a âset songâ that everyone must sing. They try to choose modern songs in hope people might actually want to be there. Anyway, the choice of song this year is Lady Gaga âBorn this Wayâ. HOWEVER they have censored the lyrics where it goes (in bold):
âNo matter gay, straight or bi Lesbian, transgendered life Iâm on the right track, baby I was born to survive
No matter black, white or beigeâ Switching out the words for âno matter year 7, 8 or 9 etcâ. Why? Because it might offend people. My friend tried to explain this to me⊠She said that they wouldnât want say grade 7 kids to go up to there parents and say theyâre singing a song about transgender people. Well fuck that. They should be able to say, yes, weâre singing a song that mentions sexuality being OK - because you are born that way. She says that since itâs a school, we must be conservative, and since gay marriage is still illegal there would be a lot of people who would find the lines uncomfortable. No. We shouldnât cater to homophobia in case they might be offended, we should however promote acceptance, how are we to collectively progress as a society if our education systems will not? I donât know if anyone has bothered to read this but Iâm not sure yet whether to approach the principal about this issue, though like or reblog if you think itâs worth doing and I will.
