a snippet from clone wars: siege that made me laugh

do you think it’s possible to have a version of touch-starvedness in the force? Do you think Vader longs for Ahsoka and Obi-Wan and even the Jedi? Do you think it’s another fundamental part of social interaction that he’s missing? Do you think he’s so, so desperately lonely, and this is one more barrier?

Do you think Obi-Wan and Anakin were soulmates in the not romantic way? Do you think they were so intertwined when they ripped apart it was gorey and bloody and they took pieces of each other with them but all those pieces did was slowly rot and die? Do you think no matter how many friends and family they made nothing would ever fill the gaping hole? Do you think they were two halves of one whole and even if they had eternity to heal they’d never be fully whole again? Do you think late into the night, unable to sleep, delirious from pain, Vader calls out to Obi-Wan? Do you think late at night, unwilling to sleep, gasping from pain, Obi-Wan desperately wants to respond, but that’s not Anakin. That’s Vader.

how many years do you think it took Obi-Wan to come to terms with the fact that there’s no Anakin, no Vader, only his brother and whatever name he chooses.

at the end of the day when it comes to padmé i think it’s really important to remember that her closest friends are literally her employees. her only other friends are her coworkers. her closest friend for years was a girl she met at 14 whose job it was to pretend to be her and potentially die about it. another friend with the same job died in her arms while pretending to be her. she does not have friends outside of her squad of employees who pretend to be her and sometimes die about it and then her politician coworkers. too many of you are way too surprised that this woman is not normal about love or relationships or her own self considering all this

fun fact the papers on that board include but are not limited to US State Department letters that I found on Google and blacked random parts out of, the anime girl aerodynamics study, half the script of mean girls but made to look like code, the other half of the script but flipped upside down, my 10th grade chemistry lab, and 4 images of a cow that I just flipped and rotated and edited a bunch until you can literally not tell it's a cow anymore

Screaming crying throwing up that both Obi-Wan and Ahsoka sliced Vader’s helmet in half to reveal the face of Anakin Skywalker because they are the only ones left alive who can truly cut through the metaphorical shell of Darth Vader and expose the raw core of who he is inside. Of course it’s those two, they cut Anakin Skywalker open to the bone, and we see that play out through the literal breaking of his mask as only they can, the ones who still love him. I’m gonna fling myself into the sun.

OBSESSED with the fact that Obi-Wan broke one side and Ahsoka broke the opposite side!!! Like, it instantly has me thinking, neither was enough to expose his whole face (his whole SELF) alone but could they perhaps have done it together??? I mean, probably not! But they each have such different pieces of Anakin Skywalker and together, while they probably still would have failed, their combination would have had a better shot than alone But then at the end of the day what is needed isn’t actually the breaking of the mask, simply allowing Anakin Skywalker to peer out from behind the trappings of Vader, but to REMOVE the mask entirely, and only Luke can do that!!! Completely obsessed with the mask symbolism lads!

I think it’s deeply profound because Ahsoka and Obi-Wan both break his mask open, they cut their way into him, they expose him, because that’s what their existence does to Anakin Skywalker. They flay him open and expose the ugly truth underneath just by existing and it doesn’t matter how much they still love him and would forgive him, he cannot accept it from either of them. It’s important that only one of Anakin’s children could do this for him and it’s not that he loved Obi-Wan or Ahsoka any less, but that they fulfilled different roles in his life and they were the ones who knew him. They were the ones who knew the faces of the younglings he killed. They were the ones who would never be able to not see the betrayal he committed when they look at him. Even if they forgive him, they would always be the ones he betrayed so horrifically. But with Luke he asks Luke to help him take it off. To gently remove it rather than breaking it apart. Luke isn’t slicing it open, he doesn’t expose Anakin by his mere existence, Anakin is willingly removing it. Luke is the child that teaches him compassion, the future that Anakin can finally see, the pure promise of that he can be wholly good for this person, because that’s all Luke has known him as. In his final selfless moments, Anakin can let go because he doesn’t have to hurdle himself over the look in Luke’s eyes that would have been there in Obi-Wan’s and Ahsoka’s eyes. This is a simple, uncomplicated, selfless love of a parent for a child, who doesn’t need to know the full extend of their parent’s faults, they only need to know the parent lovingly sacrifices for and protects them. Obi-Wan and Ahsoka can cut Vader open and see Anakin Skywalker beneath, they can each see different pieces of him, just as they hold different pieces of his heart. They could have done this together, hell, I think even Padme could have been there, but all of them wouldn’t have been able to pull Anakin back from the dark because they know him completely. But it’s only Luke who he can willingly ask him to take the helmet off, rather than shattering it around him, it is for our children that Anakin can do what is impossible with almost anyone else, no matter how much he loved them.

kinda fucks me up to know that the first among anakin's immediate friends and family to realize he'd become a danger to them was threepio. like what about anakin triggered his threat sensors? was it the way he moved? the expression on his face? what about the youngling slaughter clung to him? how could a droid sense the dark side when those who love him couldn't see it?

my favorite thing about anakin as a character is the inherent nuance lucas wrote into his story, like he's neither an innocent victim nor an inherently evil monster, he's just some guy put in a series of Situations and ultimately failing the test of his humility and self-control. he was certainly flattered and shaped by the devil, spiraling into something unrecognizable, but he chose to take every step down the pathway to hell. lucas knew he would lose a certain demographic by making him basically a greedy pawn in the larger story, not a righteous betrayed macho badass, but he did it anyway. he made him an awkward romantic and a loyal friend, a generous boy and a brilliant teen. he made sure he had all the positive qualities that meant that he had potential to be so much more than vader, but it was clearly his choice to lie, murder, and fully squander that potential. there are no excuses for what he became, no acceptable reasons to commit mass slaughter. he became an unbelievably selfish and impatient man, reckless and wantonly violent. hayden captured that nuance so well, nobody can match the sweetness of his smile and the absolute horror of his scowl on mustafar. to view him through a single lens as either pure victim of manipulation and (canonically unsupported) emotional neglect, or a creepy evil villain, denies the heart of his story and the weight of his tragedy. he's neither an angel nor a demon, he's both and neither, he's deeply human, a classical tragic hero with a flaw of greed. lucas made a choice with the prequels to tell a story that not everyone wanted to hear, and the result was a character that i think is one of the best of modern pop culture, mostly because he feels to me so very, very ancient and eternal.

It always stick with me, the moment in the council room during the march on the temple. Technically he had already chose to fall, already committed mass murder of people who trusted him but you can see a viceral moment of doubt and though we, the audience, knows how this had to go becaseu Vader existed, it always feels like there is a chance Anakin could still choose right, even that far along. And he didn't.
