his odor was so intense that will was brought to tears in the van and el lost her powers in s3 due to over exposure of the toxin. this is when joyce realized enough was enough and moved her family to california to escape The Stench. when mike began to make his way back to hawkins in s4, max got a wiff of him and immediately fell into a 18+ month coma

the mindflayer is actually a sentient cloud of mikes stench, meaning mikes lack of hygiene has a body count

in season 5, the shot of joyce in distress while mike lingers in the background is actually her praying to every god in existence for mike to get a shower
