In From the Storm Zine highlights Black female characters in comics and sci-fi. The fanzine is for and by Black women featuring original artwork, interviews and cultural criticism. These characters and their stories are for us and about us and our opinions about them matter. The name pays homage to the most mainstream Black woman in comics, Storm from the X-Men, but the name is also about finding refuge. In a world where Black women constantly deal with racism and sexism among other inequalities and acts of violence, I hope that this space can be a refuge and show that Black female opinions matter. In the wonderful world of comics, we can see the world how we want it to be. When we see these dynamic characters that reflect us, it gives us even more power, validation and hope.
So proud of this project and the contributors that were able to make it all possible. Thank you Malaika Theodore for the amazing cover design and Stacye Griffin for making everything so beautiful!
Emily Ewings searched high and low for Harriet Tubman Demon Slayer issue #1 but she was able to get it in on time to review for our zine! In this graphic novel, Harriet certainly slays and we can't wait for you all to read Emily's thoughts on it. #infromthestormzine #blerds

Alex Sullivan is a poet, facilitator, activist, and educator who recently moved to Chicago, IL. They are currently the Founder of Artists Call to Action (ACTA), an associate editor for Quaranzine: Art in Isolation, and freelance copyeditor. As a mixed agender human being who has been recently transplanted, Alex’s work is often reflective of how the self is presented in the digital world and how current socio-political events can distort that presentation. Through their work, they explore the tension between the colonized and indigenous self, and how the community can make or break one’s social identity. Having grown up on the fringes of their own communities, Alex often brings a sense of the alien and otherworldliness to their work, utilizing outer space and sacred spaces as a constant muse. We cannot wait to share with you Alex's fanfiction piece for our zine! For more info on their work: https://www.actartist.com
