THE BEST GAME IN THE NFL

The last time the Detroit Lions beat the San Francisco 49ers the year was 1995 and Matt Stafford was entering the first grade. The Lions have gone 0-13 since then but the organization has made some obvious changes in the past few that seem to have broken the miserable Motor City mould. Timing is perfect for the feature game as both teams are 1-0 and have a lot riding on them after successful campaigns last year. Let's not forget the events that occurred after their last game, which will no doubt be something to keep an eye out for just in case. Today I pick who I think will have the biggest impact on the game, thus making him my InGamer Captain. The pressure to be #1 is officially on for the 49ers after a big victory against the Packers; but it's more on quarterback Alex Smith than anything. This is why I would avoid captaining him at all costs. I would even wait to see how his first quarter goes before I even think of putting him in the game. If this is the case look to the defense, San Fran's strongest suit. Stafford is known for taking big hits and getting up, so I'm sure the 49ers are looking for some sacks. I recommend ILB Patrick Willis, LB Ahmad Brooks and LB Patrick Willis as any good bets to rough up young Matt.

On the offense there's some obvious choices for stand outs. In the air WR Calvin Johnson is a threat each week, so consider CB's Tarrell Brown andCarlos Rogers at the same time to maximize effectiveness. On the ground I would opt for RB Frank Gore, the best alternative in case of a Smith let down.The 49ers are solid as they have yet to give up a turnover in six games dating back to the regular season last year, but with pressure like that on Smith you never know how he'll handle it.

My Special Pick of the game will go to two players; WR Titus Young, a much discussed fantasy sleeper and second option for Stafford should Johnson be kept with double coverage. The other goes to K David Akers after nailing the 63-yarder last week in Green Bay. For 1 point per yard in a game that I'm expecting to be close it may come down to the kicker. At least we know Akers is good for it and has shown he deserves a chance. My pick...The 49ers!!!! xoxo,

THE BEST OF WEEK 2

Well last night's game was fun?! I almost forgot how sappy Jay Cutler could look without his helmet coming off after countless three and outs. How many sacks can Cutler take? I'm putting the over/under at 20 this year. After the first full week of football where anything can happen, we now enter Week 2; a no excuses from here on out kind of game, and another early but influential piece in the Super Bowl chess game. This week I round up the best of the best!

Baltimore Ravens (1-0) @ Philadelphia Eagles (1-0) Sunday, 1pm EDT How the Eagles didn't lose to the Browns after a Mike Vick meltdown is still a run in my stockings, but the Browns have just got to be the saddest crayon in the box. The purple of the Ravens however are putting on a strong suit with 44 points for and only 13 against in their home opener versus the Bengals (a team only slightly better than the Browns.). Both these teams enter each season with lofty expectations and this year one of them needs to deliver. While the critics have been hard on Joe Flacco despite his four straight playoff appearances since entering the league, I see him as a more refined producer this season, and possibly the stand out of the year. The Eagles may be without receiver Jeremy Maclin, and with a defense that only allowed one touchdown last week sans star Tyrell Suggs, should have no problems against a guy who threw four interceptions and is often recovering from injury. My pick: The RAVENS!!! New Orleans Saints (0-1) @ Carolina Panthers (0-1) Sunday 1pm EDT The Saints may have blown their first tires on a surprise team like the Redskins, but they won't allow sophomore Cam Newton and the meagre Panthers a repeat performance. The Panthers seem like they're headed for another season of really close games, and again I have a feeling they'll be on the losing side more often than not. Which is not GREAT news for me since Newts is my starting quarterback in my traditional fantasy league, but hey fantasy isn't about losing the game it's about getting the points. So now  that the Saints have some of their defense back and quaterback Drew Brees has been roughed up for once, his rebound game should be exemplary and I'm expecting over 300 yards a few touchdowns and a clean sheet on interceptions. My Pick.... The SAINTS!!!!

Denver Broncos (1-0) @ Atlanta Falcons (1-0) Monday 8:30pm EDT Peyton Manning didn't miss a beat last week in the win against the Steelers and that's why I'm thinking every game featuring the Broncos will be one worth writing about. This week he faces Matt Ryan, who reminds me of the Joe Flacco of the NFC; a strong arm with a functioning peanut, just a little soft around the edges and needs a bit more toughening up. It's guys like him who need to take a stand against legends like Manning if they want to set themselves apart in the NFL. Especially if he's coming off a one-year layover, a loss for Ryan would really put his abilities into question. What sucks is the Falcons just lost corner back Brent Grimes to an Achilles injury, putting him out for the whole season. Hopefully Julio Jones, who's predicted to be a big target for the dirty birds (he went quick in the draft!) and Roddy White can mix it up with Michael Turner, pending he doesn't get in an injury. I say the Manning train stops here and it's back to reality on Monday so My Pick.... THE FALCONS!!!! This Saturday I'll share my InGamer strategy on how to play the feature game... MY PICKS FOR THE SIEMENS POOL: WEEK 2

I didn't get a chance to post my first round of weekly picks for my dad's Annual Football Pool, a tradition we and my mom have been doing for years, so I'm going to post my results and predictions from Weeks 1 and 2.

Keep in mind while I did pick the Cowboys in my Best of Week 1 post last week, in the "Siemens Pool" I chose the Giants because up until LAST SEASON it was always against the spread. This is just a straight pick 'em and win 'em. Week 1 Picks

THURSDAY NIGHT TRICK OR TREAT?

I've heard complaints that starting Thursday Night Football five weeks early in the season is bad for the players, the game and may come off as 'too big of a commitment' for casual fans who can't seem to make three nights of football a must possible. I get anxious just waiting for TNF to begin so I don't see a problem with it and apparently neither do any networks and the NFL. The census seems to be the more football the merrier.

I see the dilemma; The Bears and Packers both open their seasons at home on a Sunday. The Bears win, the Packers lose. Four days later the Bears travel to Lambeau Field to play Thursday night. Whatever the outcome, three days later both teams are back on the gridiron playing their third game in 2 weeks. It's the same for everyone. The Baltimore Ravens open on a Monday night, play the following Monday in New England and then three days later go to Cleveland for an AFC North game.

The timing ultimately won't affect the consequences if each team endures a similar path, something the NFL is very aware of. However they have changed the starting times of the 4:00pm games to start at 4:25, something I don't think anyone has any issues with. To avoid conflicts with other networks and overlapping with college games I wouldn't doubt for a second every possibility was taken into account before the schedule was released and financially profitable. According to an article I read in USA Today earlier in the week, NFL games accounted for 23 of the 25 highest-rated shows in last fall's TV season. Making over saturation non existent and highlighting compelling loyalty.

With ESPN and the four big networks that televise NFL games agreeing to fees that will give the NFL $5 Billion through 2022, I wouldn't be surprised to see one day the league expanding its season, adding more teams and playing solely on Sunday night, Monday night, Thursday night and should an issue with the President arise, the occasional Wednesday night too. REFLECTIONS ON WEEK 1

Out of all the performances to compare and contrast over the NFL's opening week, hands down let's give it up for Redskin's quarterback Robert Griffin III. He was the only starting rookie qb to crack the Top 5 in passing yards and became the first ever rookie qb to throw for over 300 yards, two touchdowns and no picks in his first game. His composure was solid, his arm strength impressive and to knock down the Saints in New Orleans is a feat on its own. As always every Sunday is any given Sunday (meaning anything can happen), but Week 1 is extra special; it's that one week where you can really take away from your opponent if you're the underdog, and have some fun with the critics for the long haul. Here are some other shining examples of some guys who did good. Denver Broncos, Peyton Manning If you thought Michael Vick was going to be a better fantasy choice than Manning and grabbed him early just to ensure you didn't get stuck with the former Colt, I bet you're feeling the lumps of that decision right now. Manning, who's four neck surgeries in the past year put his ability to perform at a high level in question, hushed the naysayers with 253 yards and two scores. In his 15th season but first in Denver the vet shows early against an often feared defense, that he's still got it.

Buffalo Bills, CJ Spiller

You hate to see any athlete go down to injury, so when Bills running back Fred Jackson limped off the field early in the blowout loss to the Jets, I wasn't expecting to see the surge of C.J Spiller take place.Jackson is expected out for at least 3 weeks. Down by as much as 41-7, Spiller grabbed the reigns of the struggling Bills squad and carried off for 169 yards and a touchdown, averaging 12 yards per carry. His hard work puts him atop the rusher leader board this week. While the Bills lost by a score of 48-28, much can be credited to the following player who also caught me off guard.

New York Jets, Mark Sanchez The Jets had a dismal pre season, struggled mightily on offense and had the spotlights of two star quarterbacks taking to one field shining since the start of the summer. The prediction was that Mark Sanchez would flail (not fail, that's too harsh) miserably and be replaced with Tim Tebow by the start of Week 4. The prediction after that was that Tebow would be next to succumb to New York pressure and the whole Jets season would be in the can. Well, after Sanchez threw that first pick it was all uphill from there, 3 TD's, 266 yards and the Jets were 10-14 on third downs and forcing some costly turnovers. Tomorrow we glance at the Thursday Night Game between the Packers and Bears - a classic if you're a football fan! xoxo,
