all of the online resources I could find on doing high school walkouts sucked ass so here's how I coordinated it in under a week:
assemble a team of 4-6 people. VERY IMPORTANT!! do not skip. you need people to help you with this
2. don't do any of the work on school resources for safety in case they try to cop you for that. do everything with your own devices/materials
3. come up with a slogan. what are you walking out for? who? why? will "fuck ice" be enough?
4. I made a google survey on a personal account and asked these questions:
a. "do you want to answer some questions about ICE?" and if you answer "no" it kicks you out
b. then "do you support walking out against ICE?" if you say "no" it boots you
c. a great big list of facts loads up about recent things ICE has done without bias and only factual information
d. "do you want to walk out at your hs against ICE?" if you say "no" it boots you but I also have a secret third option that says "how else can I help?"
e. the actual plan for walking out. you need a DATE, TIME, PLACE, AND ALL THE INFO OF WHAT YOU'RE GOING TO DO. I also put in websites that tell you about your student rights and school schedule and yada yada
f. ask again if they wanna do it or help or do nothing
g. other things you can do (redirected here) include going to protests outside of school, calling your state rep at 5calls.org, donating it ACLU, united we dream, national immigration law center, etc. etc.
4. make a social media account (I did instagram) that links to the survey or whatever your way of spreading the word is. I printed little handouts to give to people at school (I was not allowed to hang them up anywhere but I did anyway and got a little in trouble)
5. make a list of ideas for signs but also make some to give out in case people aren't able to make their own
6. remind people to not be scared and even if they're the only one in their class that walks out, it's still worth it
7. try to get some news recognition!! call up liberal/neutral news sources well before the walkout and tell them the when and where
8. you do not have to tell anyone that it's you or your team behind it. you can remain anonymous don't put yourself at risk <3
9. you are going to doubt yourself and your abilities but literally do not. you are walking out for the separated families and traumatized children and innocent people murdered at the hands of ICE. you're skipping your lessons to teach the government one. your voice matters.
