KANESADA was no fool. When it came to observing people and how their expression changed upon the mention of a thing or two, or just seeing through their mask, the tachi was almost a pro. Despite being the youngest sword in his master’s army, he often acted like one of the oldest, looking after most of his companions (if not honestly all of them), making sure they were alright, training properly, just being a mom, putting it bluntly. It was just the same with Archie; even if the man had tried to turn that sudden frown into a forced smile, Izumi’s own smile had faltered if ever so slightly upon the sight of his friend’s depressed face.
He wasn’t okay. He was nowhere near being okay. That was a blatant lie, and Archie didn’t seem like the kind of man who was good at lying, at hiding his feelings. He was a sincere and honest man, and Kanesada appreciated & respected that.
❝Archie…❞ Was it alright for him to mind the man’s business? No, not really. But it was not like he was poking his head uninvited — he was only trying to be a friend, to give Archie a shoulder to cry or someone to simply listen to him. People often needed company at times like these, he knew. ❝You sure you’re okay? Lying won’t get you anywhere, much less bottling up whatever has been bothering you and trying to handle it alone.❞
A small smile opened on his face; reassuring Archie that it was alright, there’s no need to hold back if he doesn’t want to. ❝If you need anything, I’d gladly listen to you.❞
He hadn’t really... had this before. Sure, his admins were reliable and friendly -- he appreciated them very much, but he often shouldered the consequences of their lifestyle on his own. That was the Leader’s job, as well, and he would do anything to keep their spirits bright even if it meant making his own a little dimmer. It seemed this would not work with Kanesada... which honestly, he did not mind. Not this time. ✖
Despite how new it was and how hard it would be... maybe it was finally time to let people in like this. ✖
And Kanesada was right to assume what he did about him. Archie hated deception -- it was his weakest trait as a supposed “villain” because he didn’t enjoy lying. Even about the smallest things, he thought a man was only as good as his honesty and integrity. What was a man without his word, then? Perhaps this new... friend of his was similar in that belief. He had already told him enough of his problems during that mafia game a time ago behind the safety of his computer screen, anyway. It was pointless to continue to act like the last few weeks hadn’t been incredibly stressful and painful when he was well aware of all of it... ✖
So he took a deep breath and a slower exhale, shaking his head a bit before he looked up at the other. He really was so tall; he couldn’t help but smile a bit at that small thought if only to relieve his nerves. “... ...Well. Thanks... ...means a lot.” More than the other would know for a while, anyway.
“...Ya already know most of it, ‘Sada.” A small pause as he collected his thoughts. ✖
“... ...It’s... ...just hard when ya... love someone. When ya constantly worry. I can’t stop it, haha...” ✖
—Really, Nora had admittedly not been paying much attention to the behind-the-scenes goings on. She’d been too distracted with everything out in the open, like usual. Plus the whole harassing everyone telepathically thing…
She polishes off the ice cream at the speed of light, eagerly swiping the remainders off her face with hasty fingers. Needless to say, she looks far more pacified….or as pacified as someone of her nature could be.
❝ Ohhh, come on! You don’t look that old! I mean, I’m sure plenty of my teachers are older than you are and they’re all fantastic huntsmen! I mean they do kinda rattle on and on about stuff but you know, that’s what teachers do! Oh—

That old? That was... sort of a compliment, right? Compliment enough for him, anyway. He nodded along with her words until... huntsmen? Huntress? He had a vague idea of what that could possibly mean but given how this place constantly surprised me, this assumption probably wasn’t correct. ✖
“Huntress, ya say? And yer the best?” Archie smiled, eyeing her pose. “Well what’s it take t’be one a’those? Maybe I could be t’best hunter around? Hahaha!” ✖

{ ☼ } Maxie had spoken thoughtfully. With his words once honed with a sharp edge now long dulled with the aid of alcohol. He spoke in conjunction to the now softened words aimed for a man he once considered a bitter enemy. Words laced with tobacco and alcohol, a mature combination likened primarily to deadbeats at the ends of their rope. Maxie supposes that he isn’t too far from that destination, at the current velocity he currently travels…
{ ☼ } Such things, however, are unimportant. The primary concern right now is to simply have a relaxing drink and smoke with this very adversary. Two souls as opposite as fire and ice, cooled and evaporated together in an exfoliating shroud of steam and mist. Refreshed, revitalized, just like their relationship.
{ ☼ } Maxie preferred his cigarette over more liquor, opting to finish this stick and put it out in the nearest ashtray before he resumes partaking in this conversation. He begins to listen, to take in regard for the Aqua leader’s words. "That much is true," was Maxie’s simplified response. "Please, if anything, you’ve gotten even more barbaric over the years.”
{ ☼ } That, of course, was a satirized truth.
{ ☼ } "Is that right?" A pause. "You enjoy my stiffness?" Now, he turns his head fully towards his tipsy partner. One arm rests upon the desk where two long-emptied cups now lay before, the bartender far too preoccupied to clean them up at this time. Rustic eyes focus on the other, seemingly deciphering if his words were truth or just drunken banter.
{ ☼ } … In the end, he preferred the idea of it being the former.
{ ☼ } Whether it’s because he wanted another taste of smoke or something else, Maxie waited patiently for the man’s cigar to leave his lips. A few seconds of waiting results in liquor-laced lips to be freed at last, pale digits being put to good use in pinching the other’s chin. Bramble-like hairs tickle his fingers briefly as the other’s head is pulled down toward a more manageable height for him. He could easily blame the liquor for this chain of events.
{ ☼ } Very soon, he could taste the cigar smoke on Archie’s lips. Smoke and strong liquor, an addictive combination if he were not careful enough to keep this oral vicegrip a brief action. Lips curved into the faintest of smiles and eyes half closed, he whispers.
{ ☼ } “You are a peculiar specimen, Archie.”
For his rather big mouth, alcohol only made it bigger. He was never a man for deception -- in fact, he was pretty damn earnest most of the time -- and it seemed in the lucid way he spoke his this trait of his was simply stronger than before. Maxie doubting his words made sense in their circumstance, however. That much he would not deny if he were faced with such. ✖
But even the way he mirrored his statement with a question seemed... pleasant. As if Maxie already knew how truthful he meant to be. The actual desire to be such was probably the only thing the alcohol provided... the rest of it came straight of his own volition. Haha, what a strange thing to realize in this moment... but really, truly, there was something to Maxie. How else would they be pulled together as often as they were? ✖
The magnetism did not stop. In fact, it grew more rapidly than he could have ever imagined. Before he could properly react. Had he ever considered something like this before? Perhaps not, definitely not lately. The memories of the past were distant, a drunken fog... ...but he remembered skin. Nails against his back. Excitement. ✖
Familiar... yes. He remembered this, too. Lips upon lips, smoke and alcohol. It had hardly changed from the days of sneaking booze and cigarettes between sloppy kisses, laughter and hushed business. Stupid kids who pushed every boundary possible. The feelings were the same... they were simply older, now... and yet he felt so very young. ✖
It was that younger man that kissed him back in the last moment before Maxie pulled away... and it was that younger man who, after a small pause, laughed and took another drag of his cigar. So he still liked smoke, then? The breath was held, his lips onto Maxie's once more as it was released. Smoke stung his nostrils as he ran his tongue along his teeth -- his taste burned. He loved it. How long had he missed this flame? Another moment and they separated, but his face was still close. ✖
"... Peculiar? Well breathe it in, Max..." A second soft laugh. ✖
"S'all yours." ✖

She knew her sixth sense wasn’t wrong, it was never wrong! Shelly was flawless and her perfection was proven yet again as who happened to be in her line of sight? None other then the man she respected the most: Archie.
Face practically lighting up and smile stretching like it could on for miles, before her mouth was wide open and ready to shout.
”Yo! Archie!”
It wasn’t everyday you were reunited with your bro in a strange foreign place that you honestly thought you were close to pissing your pants in fear in. Fate works in mysterious ways and Shelly wasn’t about to question it!
”Don’t leave me hangin’!" seriously, her arms were about to fall off stretching so hard waiting for a bear hug.
"Sh.... Shelly...?" ✖
He had never expected to see her here. Her or Matt, really -- it just didn't seem possible, not even when he realized both Maxie's admins were here as well. But... lately, the impossible had not only come true, but had also come true in terms that made him happier than he could ever remember being. So perhaps she really was standing before him. Perhaps she was really opening her arms and inviting him in.
He certainly was happy to see her. ✖
Once he finally accepted it, he was more than glad to oblige. With ease he gave her a bit of a spin, picking her feet up off the ground and swinging her around. "Shelly! What a sight fer sore eyes!" And she truly was! Their last moment together felt like such a far off memory, now... He laughed, setting her down with a hand on each shoulder. ✖
"... ...I missed ya, lass. Very much." ✖
{ ☼ } He should have seen this coming. He questions. He questions whether or not it was right for him to say something so offhand. So offhanded without a single moment’s thought. Those very words slipped from his lips— from his fingers— and he could no longer take them back nor pretend that such confessions were never given in the first place. All he could do is own up to his words.
{ ☼ } He pauses to listen to Archie speak. Even he, the boastful and steadfast Aqua leader, questioned for the moment the integrity of Maxie’s own words. Maxie, quite frankly, did not blame him.
{ ☼ } A sigh escapes the Magma leader’s lips, his fingers curled into his palms as both hands remain stagnant upon his knees. For someone so proud, his posture spoke of uncertainty and a lack of resolve. His gaze not lifting, not yet, he begins his statements.
{ ☼ } "Things have been rough, Archie. They are… improving, at least. That, I am thankful for." A slow breath is taken in, cold air stinging his throat as he breathed. At last, the leader straightens himself out. A resolve. He gathers all his strength to secure a resolve. Rust colored eyes now change their focus point from the pavement below their feet to meet Archie’s uncertain gaze…
{ ☼ } "I meant it."
{ ☼ } There is no turning back any longer. This was it. This is when he will say it all properly. Face to face with someone he once called a bitter rival. A man he once considered a co-worker even further back. But now, he is a man whom Maxie considers…
{ ☼ } "I meant every word. I do love you."
{ ☼ } Words spoken in absolute seriousness. Though he is a broken man, he found solace in the individual whom helped pick up his pieces, continuing to do so this very day and beyond.
They had known one another long enough to notice the subtleties... and though Archie did not exactly focus on finer details, he could notice the way Maxie changed. The shift in his posture, the look in his eyes. Even the breath he takes is absorbed with different lungs. While the tension still existed... he felt change. Rapid change seemed to be continuing. ✖
He was thankful. Thankful it could be this way; thankful they could try. ✖
Having met his gaze, he watched the words leave Maxie's lips. It was enough to knock the wind from him, as if the very breath the other took was actually his own. His brows knit; he felt warm, running a hand through his loose hair. Was this really happening? It seemed so unbelievable for both of them and yet... ✖
Happiness? Overwhelming happiness. ✖
Always strange -- a constant concept during his time here thusfar -- but somehow natural, like this was meant to happen all along. But how could that be possible... he chose not to question it now. He had already heard the most important answer of the day, possibly of the rest of his life--getting ahead of himself. A sign that this was something that made him more excited than words alone could do justice. Since when was he so romantic? ✖
"... ...Hm.... okay." He finally said, a shy smile coming to his lips. And after that, a shaky laugh, but with his usual brand of unabashed gladness. What a foreign noise as of late. "... Okay! I... I love you." Said with another grin as he pulled the other into an embrace whether he liked it or not! ✖
"I love you, Max...! More than I've loved anythin'!" ✖
Was he shaking? Maybe just a little. ✖

{ ☼ } What once were calm nerves now were disheveled beneath his pale skin. Having been led to the nearest bench, he opts to take his seat beside the younger man, his gaze never leaving his frame. At this point, however, he wished for optical liberation.
{ ☼ } He mentions “the other night”. That’s right, the night where him and his blasted Freudian slip made its debut and let loose some truths he had hoped would not see the light of day so soon. So this is what Archie wanted to talk about, was it…? His lips pull down into a frown, his gaze finding the willpower to look elsewhere, away from this hulk a man. Fingers rest on his lap, anxiously tapping at his kneecaps as if waiting for something to swoop in and take him away from this tight situation. While he had prided himself into planning everything to the last second until the conclusion, this was something he had not put into consideration at all.
{ ☼ } He really should have…
{ ☼ } "… What of it?"
Archie, of course, was not much of a planner at all. Even his greatest conquests as Team Aqua's Leader were largely in part due to the diligence of others around him -- not necessarily because he was on top of his own organization. He never was, really. Things just kind of fell together based on loose ideas and passionate charging forward. This was probably similar. Nevertheless... the small difference was that he had definitely thought about this a lot, and yet it somehow did not make him any more prepared. ✖

"... ...What ya said..." He leaned forward, watching something else, anything but Maxie, really. "I-I mean." Dammit. "I... understand things've been rough n'all lately." The details of course did not need any explanation, he hoped. "And tensions're high... I get all of that, okay? But... ...just tell me. Tell me fer real." ✖

"... Did ya mean it? When ya said... ...that." And he paused, forcing himself to look up. Ah, the look in his eyes... long they held scorn but this time it was something unimaginably... delicate. Different. Difficult. ✖
