the amount of times I was told "I'm looking for my wife" at my workplace today makes me feel like I'm in silent hill
World historical loser

Hi, Oeoi!
You're so cool!
World historical loser
i went to check out the wiki page and wtf is this
upd: I didn't know about the courtroom sketch practice. this is absolutely iconic
Good news! This story exists, it’s called The Strange Case Of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde
also my favorite scurvy pic:
We need more gothic fiction where men are going mad and running around in billowing nightgowns and women are brooding, byronic, and morally dubious
so imagine a starhab fic where ahab decides to groom starbuck to secure his loyalty and at the same time starbuck decides to seduce ahab to get leverage over him and persuade him to give up the moby dick pursuit; so one evening they just simultaniously start making weird moves towards each other and they are very surprised that their strategy worked so well. The genre is comedy.
when the yaoi has toxic overtones, manipulation, genuine abuse, gross crossing of normal boundaries and psychosexual obsession
obligatorially asking about starhab for the fucked up ship bingo 👀
YAY YAY YAY MY GUYS/GIRLS
i miss being insane about starhab i should reread the novel. anyways my absolute fucking blorbos my guys who could singlehandedly undoom the narrative if they would just for the love of god bounce on it. their trustless devotion and devotionless trust make me froth at the mouth.
i need them to get weirder bc i need them to actually get vulnerable with each other even if i have to take a knife to them about it. yay yippee and such things.
also for the love of GOD PLEASE SOMEONE WRITE MORE FICS WITH THEM. I HAVE GONE THROUGH THE WHOLE BACKLOG AND I AM STARVING
boop
things that i considered unworthy of the posting individually

The hero's journey is like the homeopathy of literary analysis
Joseph Campbell enjoyers when a character exits one place and travels to one or more other places before returning to the first place
Folklore itself is so broad and being reductive of that is reductive of real cultures especially when you squash it into a Eurocentric lens to prefit a narrative. Eat shit Campbell.
a lot of writing is sort of watching the film in your head like oh sorry can’t write the chapter yet i have to repeat hallucinate the dialogue first
good morning I need to talk about moby dick 2011 because I LOVED it and got really upset about the harsh criticism of this adaptation. I watched it after finishing the book so I totally get how clumsy the script is, but I would die on this hill proving that making the show more realistic was a good move that had to be done once and it did work well.
It's fairly true that
- Melville's original elevated language erasure turnes the show into a common drama
- gay marriage erasure is a shame
- pip's insanity erasure is a shame
- Mr. racist subplot and the fistfight with stubb is a stupid
- Interactions between Ishmael and Ahab as a way to explain how the hell Ishmael knows everything that's going on the ship are pointless since Ishmael is no narrator
- cgi is obnoxious
But it didn't spoil my watching experience and I couldn't give a single fuck about the cgi because the show in itself has perfect pacing, captivating performances, it's fresh, it's breathing and it's still rooted in the novel.
It's stated several times in the book that Ahab tries his best to seem normal in order to have the crew on his side. It makes perfect sence for him to be humorous, charismatic and easygoing in his interactions with the crew. As it makes perfect sence to show him struggling with his disability, trying to adapt and to mask his trauma.
Most of the characters were humanized that way and this is valid cause in the book they're not marble statues made only to symbolize "larger-then-life" philosophical concepts either. They are very detailed living people who have lots of interactions that can and should be dramatized. (I say "they" but mean mostly Starbuck whom I consider perfectly book-accurate and my personal torture-kitten.)
Any adaptation is more gripping if doesn't try to be a pretencious artificial moralite, but makes a bet on realistic human experience. What's great about 2011 show is that it's engaging in a way that gives you footing and energy to further explore the novel.
God if you knew how much I needed to reassure myself that I'm not stupid or media illiterate if I simply enjoyed a show with some good fucking acting, thank you.
