I’ve been in country for 379 days now. I still have over 280 left. Had a good phone call today that reassured me everything would be alright even though another job offer fell through. I can’t wait to go back to my old position and pick up where I left off and see my coworkers again. I’ve also had lots of time to realign and realize what I want and what my focuses are.

I think one recurring image I see is the glorification of military relationships/marriages just because of being a service member which granted not many people can or will do. One of the many things people don’t see or understand is how it feels to be separated from the one you care and how that not only affects you but them as well. There’s times when the videocall won’t work, or your schedules conflict so much. You get busy or start to feel pushed away and that hurts too. Someone who you called all the time and were around all the time at home is now confined to a small cellphone screen and a voice or even silence. And not the angry silence but the more dreadful silence of not having anything to talk about so instead of hanging up you just look at each other and normally you feel bad because the one at home still has to do laundry and cook and you just feel like a burden. And sometimes it feels like one of you is putting all the effort. So you begin to question everything. Which is part of the reason many relationships don’t make it in the military.

I keep remembering our first date, how I picked you up in my bronco and you loved it, and how you made fun of me for the music I listen to. How you looked as you got out of the car and we walked to shady lady and you liked it in there, and how we went to all the other places. And how when we left we sang Elvis songs at the top of our lungs all the way until we got to my house. I still can't get that night out of my head. even 5 months later as I’m stationed in Qatar.
