Don't cry. Many characters out there are whumpable, okay?
whump and hurt/comfort dialogue I go feral for:
“Hey, you alright, kid?”
“I’m sorry, I know, I know it hurts, just breathe, okay? Just hold on.”
“I didn’t think you’d come back for me.”
“Shh, go back to sleep.”
”Hold them down!”
“What have you done?”
“I’m scared, I—”
“Can you stay?”
“Get out of here! Go!”
“You can’t hide shit like this from me!”
“I don’t want to lose you…”
“C’mere, kid.”
can we talk about how *chef’s kiss* it is when a character is in so much pain… or they’re just so sick, etcetc… that they’re breathing hard and they’re making a vocal sound on every exhale? like a hum, or a grunt or a whimper? it’s so specific but so good.
do you think that a lot of whump writers fantasize about being the whumpee?
That is a very good question! I'm not sure, but for me personally, I've seen myself be the caretaker, but sometimes I can be the whumpee!
I'll gauge this with the whump community actually!
Whump community, do you see yourself as...
Whumpee
Whumper
Caretaker
Combination of above or something else
whumpee misunderstanding what are supposed to be comforting words.
"you're too weak to fight." (implied "in your state" but taken as "you're not good enough")
"it's not surprising that you'd react like this" (intended "anyone in your position would be devastated by this" but taken as "you're so predictably sensitive")
"you need to stay here. you're just going to slow the team down." (meant as "you're too ill/injured to come on this mission" but taken as "you're a burden")
i just like a caretaker with good intentions upsetting whumpee more and either feeling guilty about their phrasing or not knowing what they said wrong at all.
Whumpee is able to provide a little too much information about Whumper during team meetings. Details that seem too personal to be dug out of research alone... the kind one would only know if they knew Whumper closely.
Team begin to suspect Whumpee is a traitor, a double agent. They stop listening to Whumpee's advice and suggestions during meetings because they think Whumpee is trying to trick them into one of Whumper's traps.
Now imagine the look on the Team's faces when they're captured because they didn't take the precautions Whumpee told them to.
Imagine the look on their faces when Whumper walks past all of them and goes straight to Whumpee because "It's so good to have you back, darling. I've missed you."
And Whumpee flinches.
can we just agree that, while flinching is really heartbreaking, going limp is sometimes just so much worse?
Because flinching implies that the whumpee expects violence, while going limp implies that they are used to it
when an already injured character gets tossed like a ragdoll into their buddy by some violent force/explosion/magic/collision (pick your poison) and they both go down hard. the shredded and bruised elbows and knees don’t matter, nothing else matters because they have their friend back… except their friend hasn’t moved or talked or made a sound, limp in their arms. so they roll them over in their lap and sure enough they’re passed the fuck out. hey. no, no, no, no. the pleading spills out of them as their hands scurry over the slack planes of their friend’s face, but no matter how much they shake them, or call their name, they remain ashen and bloody, their breathing shaky and stuttering, there but barely, dead to the world for now. stay with me. they pull them close. please stay with me.
I love it when a character laughs uncarefully and their soft laugh turns into a groan, and then they still smile a little despite frowning in pain. I love this mixed expression of frowning and smiling for some reason. Especially when the character laughs because of something the caretaker said or did.
Whumpee hooked up to a mind torture device. An “ethical” alternative to physical torture, it leaves the body completely intact as it only tricks the mind into believing any corporal pain and affliction is real. Numerous “punishments” are inflicted on Whumpee—burns, broken bones, whipping, removing fingers, etc.—all completely real in Whumpee’s head.
After so long with the device, Whumpee is finally released. And they can only stare in disassociated horror at their perfectly intact body.
child whumpee who was groomed into a living weapon at the cost of their rapidly deteriorating health. they are forced beyond their natural limits, every new session with the whumper leaving their body in a worse state than before. they get used to the chronic pain and the fatigue that they feel all the time. they get used to the idea that they won't live beyond the first hit they'll land on the enemy.
except, they never get to land that hit— the project gets defunded and them along with the other children are rescued. their caretaker is quiet, and they don't have any memories of before— before that acidic white room and the experiments.
they aren't expecting much, if anything at all— even this idea of being anything other than a weapon— a pistol loaded, a sword wielded, a bomb ticking— is absurd. hollow. unreal. they are waiting to wake up from another simulation, for the gotcha! from the whumper.
it doesn't come. days pass. they learn how to make tea. they are given books that aren't for the sole purpose of enhancing their intelligence. they are given soft things— warm sweaters, thick blankets, socks and gloves and pillows— and they are so different from the plain, thin robes of the lab. these are vibrant colors and they have texture that doesn't make their skin crawl. they learn that they love the color of the sky.
they learn to love their caretaker, who one day asks them to come sit with them near the fireplace. they rub whumpee's back gently, making the constant pain ease up under the warmth. they are given strange-tasting concoctions which help them sleep when their eyes won't close. they are given food that doesn't taste like mush, and the spices make their eyes water but they'd gorge themselves on this a thousand more times than ever eat that tasteless garbage again.
they learn to be a human. they learn to be whole. they learn to love their body, piece-by-piece, and build a life past the vague idea of dying on the battlefield, like a supernova exploding before fading forever.
they are loved. they are loved, the caretaker tells them everyday, in all of the ways they care for them. they'll never go back.
cw: touch aversion, psychological whump, implied violence
the thing that does it for me isn't just painful punishment, althought i love to see that, it's how the whumpee starts reacting to non-painful touches. the whumper's hand just grazing their cheek/neck and they stiffen up, their body flushes with adrenaline bracing for impact that never comes. and i LOVE IT
really nice gift for Specifically Me when the character has an immediate and violent panic response to being held down / physically restrained. especially if their affect is usually cheerful or relaxed or reserved and this is their one "sicko mode (wildly uncharacteristic)" button.
What's the most serious injury your OC has ever had?
I love one leg chained somewhere. You still have full range of motion, full mobility. But you're not going anywhere.
"Whumpee woke up, nuzzling into a soft blanket. They were laying on a soft mattress, and something was very, very wrong."
a classic for a reason. they could never make me hate you. perfect. no comment.
many such foolish cases :)
