whenever ppl call me delusional or dumb or whatever for shipping kingdon because “that’s not how they were written,” “why would you try and force a romance where there isn’t one,” etc etc. it genuinely makes me wanna rip my hair out. it’s like. yes. i KNOW. i’m well aware that their relationship is not a romantic one, they literally just met that day and he’s married. and they obviously wouldn’t give langdon a romance plot on top of all the other shit he’s got on his plate okay i know. it’s not about what they currently are; it’s about the potential for what could be! it’s about the natural development of relationships and how work friends turn into real friends who, sometimes, turn into lovers! and like. jesus christ can everyone relax we are on season ONE. out of however many seasons we’re gonna get in the future, maybe even as many as ER got!! thinking about what their relationship could look like in a year or five or even ten is FUN. let me have FUN

alright it's fuzzy I know but. this is the first time I've looked at this clip from a computer screen where you can really see the utter GLEE on Mel's face as she's running along with him. she is ecstatic. this is the girl who gets excited and gives impromptu high five's after procedures-- she is LIVING for Langdon's energy. no wonder she notices his absence and is so grateful when he comes back

like we're being told his wife must resent him for being impulsive and all over the place and meanwhile Mel is not only immediately enamored by his high-energy and spontaneity, but she's better for it. she's so energized and ready to be a kickass doctor when she's with him

on my posting era so last post tonight about why Mel and Frank are perceived as being romantic despite all the media's (scoff) disbelief and why can't a woman and man be friends doesn't really work for them: BECAUSE Langdon already has female friends and his dynamic with them are soooo different from what he shares with Mel.

they repeatedly point out how langdon is not someone who's, while quite likable, soft and gentle. he banters with garcia, collins and dana. he's wildly gleeful and snarky over every single conversation, even while treating patients. he's serious and distant with trinity, and hostile with her later on. he shows kindness to whittaker when his patient dies, but doesn't go out of his way to engage with him. with everyone else in the show, frank langdon is shown to be a bit of an asshole and abrasive without softening his edges.

EXCEPT MEL.

like the change isn't immediate. he doesn't automatically go soft on her, but when he sees that she's not engaging with him the way he's comfortable with and also that she's quite different, he changes his approach. he praises her in ways he doesn't praise anyone. he seeks her out for patient care. he constantly asks her if she's okay. it's a direct contrast to the man frank langdon is portrayed to be and he's so vocal about his preference that there's no room for misinterpretation. add to this the constant running theme of langdon being a neglectful husband and the patients reflecting his life, you can see that what mel and frank share is an instant connection.

and then people will come and cry about "why can't a man and woman be friends?"

A reason I think I've latched onto Kingdon and the idea of Mel and Langdon together so fast and hard is because they managed to take an already excellent trope of grumpy/sunshine and turn it into something better: brick wall vs open book.

Langdon is honest about nothing in his life. His whole persona is a way to shield himself from everyone around him by being a cynical, sardonic asshole. He doesn't want to have anyone see that he's sensitive, that the ER broke him and he's hiding something. He's also good at it. So good that no one around him realizes that something's off and it takes a day one intern to realize that something's fishy about him.

Enter Mel. Mel who can't tell when someone's joking. Who can't hide it when she's excited or sad or frustrated. She wears her heart on her sleeve and every emotion on her face, and suddenly Langdon can't wear his mask around her.

It's so telling to me that the person in the ER that Langdon is the most earnest with, the most kind to is Mel. He tries to joke with her, sure, but he goes out of his way to be sincere with her whenever he has the chance. When he actually confessed that he learned something from her with Terrance, I was blown away because I guarantee he's never admitted that out loud to any other resident or attending physician in his career.

But he has to admit it to Mel because that's the only way she's going to know. Mel is forcing him to lower his defenses, to be kind and complimentary, and I am eating up every second of it.
