Something I really struggle to get people to understand is that like. Sometimes there was no intentional homoerotic subtext, the author was just extremely misogynistic. Sometimes the author wasn't "secretly shipping" those two men, the author literally just hates women so much that they see them as being literally incapable of relationships with depth. Like this is kind of a big thing with misogyny actually. A lot of extremely misogynistic people truly believe that a man can only have meaningful and complex relationships with other men because they literally just think women are so inferior they only exist to birth children and clean the house. It's like when people say along the lines of "no one worships exclusively men quite like straight men do". It's just that phenomenon actually. That happens to be manifesting in a raging misogynist's writing. Writing a man character who literally only puts effort into his friendships with other men while completely ignoring his literal girlfriend or wife is actually an extremely straight thing to write. And that doesn't mean you can't ship those men or that there are no stories with actual intentional homoerotic subtext. I just think it's important to be able to recognize extreme misogyny in writing and acknowledge it without brushing it off and assuming good intentions when literally all evidence is screaming that this was a misogynistic writing choice and not a representing gay men choice.

I think it was very telling that everyone in the fandom wanted someoen to tell those agents off so bad, they wanted justice, and then the show shows that when someoen does speak out, (Robby in this instance, or Jesse) ice responds with violence. The reality is that sayin anything gets more people hurt. All Robby did was anger the agent and look what happened to everyone else. Because what they’re doing is illegal. Unlawful. They make it so that fighting back only hurts more people.
yeah, this just isn’t the sort of show where they would’ve been able to get away with somehow rescuing the woman from the agents and putting the agents in their place. this is the reality of what i’m sure so many healthcare workers are currently experiencing. i bet they wish they could safely intervene, too, but, as you said, it’s such a tricky situation. (and as we have seen in the cases of alex pretti and renee good, potentially deadly.)
also, casting such a tall man as the agent was genius; he managed to make robby look small besides him, which i think highlighted the complete uncharted territory of the situation. everyone feels helpless, no one knows what to do, because they’ve never dealt with this before! everyone’s on edge, everything feels so bleak.
Ur so right about the ice thing. Like. The SECOND Robby called that man out for how him just being there was a curse upon the hospital had his ego so crushed he immediately got violent with pranita and tried to deny her care, grabbing her by her bad arm and then attacking/arresting Jesse for doing his job. It’s an unlawful arrest but ice is allowed to do that. They don’t have to follow the law and they aren’t. They hurt people because they want to. They are so fragile and insecure that they take these jobs specifically to cause harm to make themselves feel bigger. Why wouldn’t they take pranita to the hospital and then proceed to harass nurses and patients? It gives them that feeling of power that they crave so badly.
good point on Robby’s outburst! i know people were hoping for, like, heroic actions from the doctors (i know, it’d be satisfying), but the reality of the situation is that there is no right thing to do when confronted with ICE agents. they will escalate, no matter what you say/do, and in trying to be direct about his wishes, robby accidentally put the rest of the department/patients in danger. not his fault — he was rightfully angry! but they were good at portraying how quickly these things get out of hand.
i’ve already seen a couple of people trying to be snarky (?) about the ICE plot in today’s episode, saying it wasn’t realistic because the agents wouldn’t have taken the woman to the hospital at all. just giving my two cents as someone who lives in LA and has been personally impacted by their presence in our county since last summer — this has very much been happening. it’s a fairly big problem, and people are terrified of seeking medical help right now for this exact reason. they like going into establishments to freak people out, they like the panic they cause waiting in hospitals and clinics. it’s been a year of this now.
It was only a millisecond, but when Robby looked to Langdon with a laugh -- the only other man in the room -- as an invitation to join in on mocking Samira!!! That being the ONLY time Robby has extended a friendly glance to Langdon this season... diabolical acting choice by Noah Wyle. Incredible.
helloooo succession fandom are you still alive ?? felt like drawing my pookie tom wambhsjksdj 🫶
