Genre: slow burn / neighbors au / hurt / comfort
Summary: a quiet med student, a cigarette-stealing neighbor, and a very bad night in the hallway.
He stood there for a second.
If anything—they got worse.
More aggressive.
More impatient.
Like they knew time was running out.
His grip on the gun tightened.
Every small movement.
Every shift in his posture.
You didn’t realize you were holding your breath until—
The wood splintered near the lock.
You flinched, a gasp barely leaving your lips—
His arm came across you—firm, solid—pushing you slightly behind him.
Like there was no other option.
The door gave in further.
A sliver of the hallway now visible through broken wood.
“Darwaza todne ki zarurat na padti agar khud khol deta, Humza.”
They said his name like they knew him.
His entire focus was on the door now.
Wood snapping.
Lock giving out completely.
but before you could even process—
“Akhir mil gya na tu Hamza ,” one of them smirked.
everything happened at once.
You flinched hard, hands flying up to your ears
Faster than you could follow.
One second he was in front of you—
he had shifted sideways, grabbing your arm and pulling you with him just enough to get you out of direct line.
The man on the left dropped instantly.
The sound stuck in your throat.
The second man staggered back, shocked—
The bullet hit the wall behind you.
Your fingers tightened around his arm instinctively.
You didn’t even realize you’d done it.
Because for a split second—
Behind him.
Shielding you completely.
The second man collapsed.
Your chest rising too fast.
He was already looking at you.
There was something darker there now.
Something you hadn’t seen before.
Your voice came out barely a whisper.
He didn’t let you finish.
A flicker of something—regret? anger?—crossed his face.
“Hume yaha se Jana hoga.”
Your eyes flicked once more to the bodies on the floor.
Something in his expression shifted again.
But he didn’t say anything about it.
He just reached for your hand—
he didn’t wait for you to take his.
Somewhere down the hallway—
Your head snapped toward the door.
He swore under his breath.
Your eyes flicked back once more—
To the blood slowly spreading across your floor.
everything caught up to you at once.
“Main—” your voice shook, “main nahi—”
He was in front of you again.
fingers brushing lightly against your wrist.
His thumb pressed slightly against your pulse.
“Good,” he murmured, softer now. “Bas… mere saath raho.”
His hand tightened around yours.
You barely had time to register anything before he was pulling you along—
Down the narrow staircase.
Your steps stumbled trying to keep up.
Your hand was still in his.
His grip firm.
Unyielding.
Like letting go wasn’t even an option.
The alley outside was dark.
Your heartbeat filled the silence.
Just tightened his hold on you—
he pulled you hard enough that you had no choice.
Your shoulder brushed against him once—
and he instantly shifted—
placing himself slightly ahead.
A car waited at the end of the alley.
He opened the door, practically pushing you inside before rushing to the driver’s seat.
The car sped off before you could even close the door properly.
The drive was nothing but cold silence.
You pressed them into your lap.
the other moved slightly toward you.
Like he wasn’t sure he was allowed anymore.
it hit you more than anything else.
You turned your face toward the window.
City lights blurred past.
Your voice came out small.
Just the sound of the engine.
The set of his jaw.
The tension in his shoulders.
The way his eyes kept flicking to the mirrors.
Like he was expecting something.
“Tumne unhe…” your voice faltered, “bina soche…”
That wasn’t the answer you wanted.
You shook your head slightly.
Something unreadable passed through his eyes.
But he looked away just as quickly.
“Tumhe abhi bs safe rakhna hai Mujhe .”
The word felt strange now.
When the car finally slowed.
It stopped outside an unfamiliar place.
Came around to your side.
You didn’t move immediately.
Your fingers curled tighter in your lap.
He just stepped back slightly.
But the moment your feet hit the ground—
You didn’t even think about it.
And that’s when it happened.
Like something inside him had quietly… dropped.
But he didn’t say anything.
As you entered inside the haveli
The door shut behind you.
You wrapped your arms around yourself slightly.
Trying to steady your breathing again.
His phone started ringing again.
Your eyes flicked to him.
“Uthao,” you said quietly.
More insistent this time.
Your voice came out firmer.
He closed his eyes for a brief second.
His expression hardened instantly.
His gaze flicked toward you.
But you didn’t stop this time.
“Woh log kaun the?”
“Tumhara naam kyun le rahe the?”
“Tum—”
He didn’t answer immediately.
he didn’t try to hide anything.
“Wohi jisse tumhe door rehna chahiye tha.”
But it hit harder than anything else.
Like he knew—
there was no point hiding anymore.
“Hamza,” he said quietly.
Your brows knit slightly.
The name settled in the room.
But it carried something.
Your fingers curled slightly into your palms.
He let out a slow breath.
Like even saying it out loud cost him something.
“Main… Rehman Dakait ke liye kaam karta hoon.”
For a second—
you thought you heard wrong.
Your lips parted slightly.
You’d heard that name before.
In stories people didn’t finish.
A cold wave settling deep in your chest.
Like saying it louder would make it more real.
Didn’t try to explain it away.
“Jo tum soch rahi ho… woh sab.”
Your eyes searched his face.
For something that would make this easier.
And that somehow hurt more.
A small shake of your head.
“Tum—” your voice broke slightly, “tum un logon jaise ho?”
In the way his jaw tightened.
In the way his gaze dropped for a second.
“Main un jaisa nahi hoon.”
“Lekin…” a pause, heavier this time, “unke saath hoon.”
“Phir… mere saath kyun?” you asked, voice trembling now. “Mere paas kyun aaye?”
He almost let out a dry laugh.
But it didn’t reach his eyes.
“Main door reh raha tha.”
The way he’d always stop himself.
He ran a hand through his hair again, frustration slipping through.
A small, helpless exhale.
“Balcony pe woh cigarette…”
Your breath caught slightly.
“Choti choti baatein,” he continued, quieter now, like he was admitting something he shouldn’t, “tumhara hasna… bina wajah baat kar lena… jaise sab normal ho.”
His gaze lifted to you again.
That vulnerability he hides from the world.
“Mujhe yaad dila deta tha… ke main kya ho sakta tha.”
“Iss liye…” his voice dropped even lower, “main ruk gaya.”
“Iss liye main tumhare paas aata raha.”
Your eyes stung slightly.
But confusion—fear—still lingered stronger.
“Tumhe pata tha na?” you whispered. “Ke yeh sab… dangerous hai?”
A flicker of something crossed his face.
Something close to regret.
And that scared you more than anything else.
You shook your head slightly, trying to process.
“Tumne mujhe bataya kyun nahi?”
“Main taiyaar nahi thi iske liye—main—”
Your eyes snapped to his.
“Main chahta tha…” he struggled for the words for the first time, “ke tumhare liye main bas… woh hi rahun.”
“Woh ladka jo tumhare saath balcony pe cigarette share karta hai.”
And now it felt like it had been taken away.
He didn’t answer immediately.
Like he was memorizing something.
“Ab…” he said finally, voice quieter than before, “ab tum sach jaanti ho.”
this wasn’t just about him anymore.
walking away didn’t feel as easy as it should have.
Didn’t try to explain more.
Just let the silence sit between you.
Like he’d already said more than he should have.
“Yeh jagah…” he started, voice steadier now, slipping back into control, “ek safe house hai.”
Your eyes lifted to him again.
He gestured faintly around.
“Kisi ko nahi pata tum yahan ho. Subah tak… Donga aa jayega.”
“Woh tumhe aur safe jagah le jayega.”
Like he’d already thought ten steps ahead.
Your chest tightened slightly.
“…aur tum?” you asked before you could stop yourself.
Then a small, almost tired exhale left him.
“Aaj raat lekin mei yahin hu.”
Because he stepped back again.
“Mujhe…” he started, then stopped.
Like the words didn’t come easily to him.
Your fingers curled slightly at your sides.
“Main nahi chahta tha ke humari kahani…” he paused, searching for the right words, “…aise shuru ho.”
Your throat felt tight again.
Not with blood and fear and truths that cut too deep.
He looked at you properly then.
that honesty he didn’t hide anymore.
“Agar…” he hesitated, just slightly, “agar ek mauka aur de do…”
“…toh main sab theek kar dunga.”
Just something he wanted to believe.
“Hum phir se shuru kar sakte hain humari yeh khanni.”
it wouldn’t really be simple.
A fresh start doesn’t erase what you’ve already seen.
“Lekin agar tum nahi chahti…”
Like he was already preparing for it.
“Itna ke…” a small, almost broken breath, “tumhe kabhi mere hone ka ehsaas bhi na ho .”
Silence filled the room again.
More to himself than to you.
He turned slightly toward the door.
Hand brushing against the handle—
Without looking back, he said quietly—
“Aaj raat… araam se so jao.”
The door closing softly behind him.
The room felt different now.
Because he was still there.
wouldn’t stop replaying everything.
the way he said “main ruk gaya.”
Your fingers lifted slowly.
Still remembering the warmth of his hand.
Because no matter how much you tried to make sense of it—
one thing refused to go away.
And that terrified you the most.
Lying there, staring at the ceiling, eyes burning but refusing to close for too long.
The way he stood in front of you.
The way he said his name.
The words sat heavy in your chest.
You turned slightly on the bed, pulling the thin blanket closer around yourself.
Every small moment replaying—
The way he always noticed.
Even when he shouldn’t have.
Because somewhere between the fear—
something else had settled too.
And that scared you more.
By the time sleep almost came—
Soft light filtering through the curtains.
You blinked slowly, sitting up.
Your heart picked up slightly.
Feet cold against the floor.
Leaning slightly against the wall near the window.
A cigarette between his fingers.
Smoke curling slowly into the morning light.
Like you were seeing him properly for the first time.
Not just the man next door.
Not just the stranger with a gun.
His gaze shifted toward you.
And the moment your eyes met—
he straightened slightly.
Like he was giving you space to decide.
you didn’t let that distance stay.
Like he didn’t want to hope.
You stopped in front of him.
neither of you said anything.
your fingers found his hand.
The way his fingers stilled in yours.
The cigarette slowly slipping away from his hand.
Your grip tightened just a little.
Not letting him pull away.
Your voice came out soft.
“Pata hai… yeh sab bohot pagalpan hai.”
Your thumb brushed lightly against his knuckles.
“Jo kuch bhi hai… jo tum ho…”
His breath hitched slightly.
The words settled between you.
But they didn’t need to be loud.
the way something in his expression shifted.
Like he didn’t expect to hear that.
Your other hand lifted slowly—
resting lightly against his cheek.
Warm skin beneath your fingers.
Like you were grounding him.
Your thumb brushed once more against his cheek—
before you lowered your gaze slightly.
Pressing a soft kiss against it.
Lingering for just a second longer than necessary.
His fingers twitched slightly in yours.
you pulled his hand closer.
Resting it lightly against your chest.
Right where your heart was racing.
Your voice dropped to a whisper.
But it didn’t shake this time.
And for the first time he didn’t step back.
For a moment he just looked at you.
Like he didn’t expect that.
Not after everything you’d seen.
His hand was still in yours.
Resting against your chest.
Something in his expression shifted.
His fingers tightened slightly around yours.
Resting gently against your cheek.
the space between you disappearing.
Your breath hitched slightly—
but you didn’t move back.
His forehead came to rest against yours.
Like even this he wasn’t taking for granted.
For a second neither of you spoke.
Right there, between you.
“Intezaar karogi… toh aana padega.”
Because it didn’t sound like a question.
It sounded like a promise.
