I'm really not good at asking for help, so please understand this is fumbled and awkward, but my laptop is history - will no longer boot up, not functional in the least. I am [once again] without a job and without a working computer, it's nearly impossible for me to get one.

Okay I apologize for posting this on my main account instead of my personal side blog like I usually would but I NEED to talk about this. Me lore: I was born with HUGE fucking adenoids and could barely breathe through my nose, and therefore did not have a sense if smell. I had a surgery when I was 11 to have them removed and as I healed I gained a sense of smell, but it’s still much weaker than the average person’s because reasons.

All of this to say that there have been a number of things that I didn’t realize had smells.

Fun fact I once called my mother crying because I was making bagel bites in the microwave (I was like 12) and I could smell them and I was CONVINCED that these bagel bites were going to explode or something because I didn’t realize that microwaving food made a smell. Copper, that’s one that startles me. When people say they enjoy the smell of glue I can’t relate because glue doesn’t have a smell to me. Apparently the food that I feed my cat smells terrible but it doesn’t bother me because I can’t smell it. The closest I’ve come to smelling flowers is smelling artificially scented flower candles. I’m used to things having smells that I can’t smell.

OK BASICALLY. Ants do have a smell if you squish them but not while they’re alive. It’s pretty strong, like 2-3 feet away.

However, not everyone can smell it. I don’t think it’s related to sense of smell, mine is pretty bad and I can totally smell them. (It’s also the grossest smell. I hate it so much.) I’ve heard it’s a gene or something

Ok I'm reblogging this again to comment on this. To the people who say they can smell ants, what species of ants are yall smelling? A huge majority of the ants I encounter are all harvester ants: cousins of leaf cutters. They're some of the largest ants out there. I've kept them as pets. They do not have a smell. Only other ants I've really been around are fire ants which I have also never observed a smell from.

Also, how close do you have to be to an ant to smell it? Ive had my ants pretty close to my face when I use my magnifying glass. All other species of ant I've had in a 3 foot or further distance from my face. This includes trap jaw ants, carpenter ants, fire ants, and leaf cutters.

I could imagine formic acid spraying ants to have a smell, considering they literally spray acid. But I've never been around them. Many ants I've encountered have pretty terrible stings, but again, I've never noticed a smell. Even after being bitten and stung.

What the hell are yall talking about literally walk me through it I need to test the idea for myself at this point.

Ok so it’s a faint smell when you’re somewhat close to the ant, barely there, but if the ant is dead, it’s extremely strong and you can smell it anywhere near the ant (usually) personally I’ve never tried it with many species of ants, but I would presume it happens with all of them? Definitely with the little black ones and fire ants.

If you haven’t smelled it before, you probably can’t smell it (really don’t know how that works though) it’s really unique, kind of like motor oil/black licorice/bleach
