The problem with travel by Ada LimĂłn
âItâs summer now, and youâre craving a simpler existence. You want to read. You want to write. You want to meet strangers for dinner, and not refuse another drink at another bar. You want to dance. You want to find yourself in a basement, neck loose, bobbing your head as a group of musicians play, not because they should, but because they must. Itâs summer now, and youâre looking forward to worrying less. Youâre looking forward to longer nights and shorter days. Youâre looking forward to gathering in back gardens and watching meat sputter on an open barbecue. Youâre looking forward to laughing so hard your chest hurts and you feel light-headed. Youâre looking forward to the safety in pleasure. Youâre looking forward to forgetting, albeit briefly, the existential dread which plagues you, which tightens your chest, which pains your left side. Youâre looking forward to forgetting that, leaving the house, you might not return intact. Youâre looking forward to freedom, even if it is short, even if it might not last. Youâre looking forward.â

Without naming your job, tell me something you say over and over again at work.
"I can note your interest in that feature for future development."
When you get the reputation of being the guy with the encouraging words on New Year's Eve, it can start to come through as a little pressure -- what if the situation on the ground is worse than usual? what if people are more scared than they usually are, and with cause? what use are good vibes then?
well as you might imagine, because of the way I am hard wired, I think it's good and useful to figure out a way of imagining the light at the end of the tunnel
there's no tunnel, to be clear! nor light! these are metaphors! we could as easily say: the surface above the water; the doorknob in the darkness; the key at the bottom of the junk drawer; and so on, and so on
the use of these metaphors seems limited! strongly limited! when you get through tunnel to the light: what's out there? when you find the key in the drawer: do you actually want to open that door?
but for me this is fact where these ways of describing the world become more, not less, useful and instructive. questions, rightly posed, are about possibilities, not hard stops
"possibilities, not hard stops" -- this is one reason why a recent trend in interviewing on album cycles has been kind of mystifying to me: people will ask me to sort of summarize the song. but that's not how songs work! their job begins where the tidy explanation ends!
hence the occasional usefulness, I'm told, of the phrase "if it kills me" in a song I know people play on new year's eve, for which tradition I am so immensely grateful. Thank you.
it is a contradiction! make it through or get killed: these aren't compatible, are they? but yes in fact they are and we know they are. it's easy to forget but we know.
snakes leave behind whole skins. all manner of flying creatures, not just butterflies, do them one better, whole new selves from wriggling worms. rocks into gems. mystics die to the flesh to be reborn in the spirit. rebirth is the rule, not the stray exception, if we can grasp it
we in this country (and, I'd argue, the world, but I'm not here to argue tonight) are challenged to make of our present situation something better. it's a tall order
but look at yourself, consider your life
you have done it before, squared the smooth circle, navigated the hard corner, slipped through and lived to see another day
together? in solidarity? is there anything we can't do: for those suffering in an increasingly inhuman justice system; for our trans kin targeted by this wretched government; for immigrants scapegoated by the callous and the cruel? for, in and through all this, ourselves?
no tunnel but the tunnel whose contours we identify for the purposes of finding its exit, no light but the one we follow to better times
you are here at the end of a year in which I'll bet you wondered what the point was, at some point
the point is that together we can find a way. the point is that. together.
I wish you, and me, and all of us, strength & solidarity & joy in the new year as we find our way together: which we have done this year already, and will arise tomorrow to do again. /thread
the cornley polytechnic drama society is the funniest found family to me because like. thereâs no reason for them to still be together??? and Iâm coming at this from the perspective of an actor who stayed WAY too long at a toxic community theatre but like. if my entire set had collapsed around me and I had to drink paint thinner AND we had multiple different understudies go on for the same role??? all on opening night??? I wouldâve been out of there SO FAST LMFAO and yet the cornley crew stayed and stuck around like the in-canon explanation for that must be SO funny like yeah they were originally just co-workers, fellow students, but now weâre trauma bonded and yeah we all kinda hate each other at different times and our director is always beefing with one of our actors (well all of our actors) and also with our stage manager and none of us are really good at our jobs but weâre sticking together! we will never leave each other! THEYRE SO FUCKING FUNNY TO ME
happy birthday <3
THANK YOU love u!!!!
wonder what goes down in those risk assessment meetings

Israeli forces are specifically brutalising Chris Smalls, the only Black member of the last Freedom Flotilla. And most union leaders and media outlets arenât speaking about it.

âWhen he reached the Israeli prison, U.S. human rights defender Chris Smalls was physically assaulted by seven uniformed individuals,â the coalition said on X.
ChrisâŻSmalls is an American labor organizer from New Jersey who founded and led the Amazon Labor Union (ALU).
âThey choked him and kicked him in the legs, leaving visible signs of violence on his neck and back,â the statement said.
The FFC highlighted that âwhen his lawyer met with him, Chris was surrounded by six members of Israelâs special police unit. This level of force was not used against other abducted activists.â
It decried the attack, saying: âWe condemn this violence against Chris and demand accountability for the assault and discriminatory treatment he faced.â

On Monday, details emerged that not only was Smalls detained, but he was physically beaten by the IDF. He was the only Black member of the Freedom Flotilla on the Handala.
âThe Freedom Flotilla Coalition confirms that upon arrival in Israeli custody, U.S. human rights defender, Christian Small, was physically assaulted by seven uniformed individuals,â wrote the Freedom Flotilla Coalition on Instagram. âThey choked him and kicked him, leaving visible signs of violence on his neck and backâ.
Still, despite Smalls having been profiled by every major media outlet in the U.S. when he successfully led the union drive at Amazon, not a single major media outlet has covered his violent detention by the IDF three days ago.
In 2022, The New York Times even ran a Style section profile on his fashion choices among more than a dozen pieces that they ran on his organizing efforts, but the paper has not said anything about the detention and beating of a high-profile labor activist at the hands of the IDF. Only three smaller left-leaning outlets, Zeteo, The Grio, and Jezebel covered it.
âThis totally makes sense,â wrote University of New Brunswick Professor Nathan Kalman-Lamb on Bluesky. âA notable public figure in the US (Amazon labor organizer Christian Smalls) is illegally arrested by Israel and subjected to severe physical violence while on a hunger strike⊠and not one US media outlet of any type has decided that is news.â
Some union leaders have already begun to speak out about his detention.
"As a union, we are demanding the immediate release of Chris Smalls and all captured activists," said the 29,000-member California Faculty Association in a statement late Monday. "We further call for an immediate end to the engineered famine and deliberate starving of the people in Gaza, labor complicity with genocide, and all US military aid to Israel".
Other unions are expected to denounce the beating & detention of Smalls by the IDF.
However, his international union leader, Teamsters union President Sean O'Brien, has stayed silent on the detention of Smalls, who founded the Amazon Labor Union, which is now an affiliate of the Teamsters.
Instead, the Teamsters President Sean O'Brien took to social media to advertise his upcoming interview with fascist commentator Vivek Ramaswamy and his 3 million right-wing followers.
