Cook County #377: The Parachutist

This gentleman was discovered August 21, 2012 in an abandoned building at 3203 W. Cermak Road (which appears to now be a business) in my hometown of Chicago, IL.

Not much is known about this man, as his body was described as “severely” decomposed to the point of being unrecognizable; however, there were two tattoos visible and it was determined that the gentleman had dark hark and reddish-black facial hair.

Both tattoos appear to be stick and poke, one on each forearm.

The first might be representative of a military stint, as it is appears to be a parachutist badge (aka “jump wings”); additionally the wings seem outstretched, which may be indicative of Naval or Marine Corps service. There is lettering over the top of the design that may say “parachutist,” but I would love another set of eyes on that.

The second tattoo is of a scorpion (as far as can be determined).

I will link the Cook County profile below, which has his height and weight, though it appears these were the post-decomp stats, and it is hard to say, especially with the height, if they are at all representative of his stature in life. It does also say that jeans and athletic shoes were found with the body, but there is no size information given. There is also, no age rage, no post-mortem interval, and, not unsurprisingly, no fingerprints. There was, however, DNA samples collected and a dental chart done.

His NAMUS ID number is 11190 and his Cook County ID number (ME/C #) is: 377 Aug 12. These links lead to sketches only, none of which are NSFL.

Cleveland County Jane Doe

On August 31st, 2008, would-be fishermen walking along the banks of Lake Thunderbird in Oklahoma came across the body of a woman in a shallow grave.

She was estimated to be 30-45 year old, approximately 5′ 4″ tall, and whose weight could not be determined. It is reported that she’d probably been deceased for a year prior to her discovery; so it is perhaps not surprising that her body was not recognizable, and not all of her limbs were found. What is surprising, given the state of decomposition, is that a large, full-color sun/moon tattoo (describes as a “sunburst” in the case report) on her lower back was intact.

Other items of note about the body: the medical examiner determined that she had likely given birth; she had a healed fracture of her frontal bone and also had spinal fusion surgery at some point in her life.

Her NAMUS ID number is 6727, and her OK OCME ID number is 0803375. There is a facial reconstruction, and they do have dental and DNA for her. There have been twenty rule outs thus far. In the above linked article, a commenter posted a possible match that has not yet been ruled out and seems like a very good possibility, but there are few details in that woman’s case.

Rubber City Boy

The Cook County Medical Examiner has a list (updated in May 2017) of 47 unidentified persons--going all the way back to 1983. Many of these people were found in the various waterways around Chicago--the river, shipping canals, and Lake Michigan. The first person profiled here is one of those individuals.

He was found June 10th, 2015, floating in the lake, at 1000 E. Ohio Street. He is described as a 20-30 year old White/Asian male, ht:5’8”, wt: 122 lbs. He had numerous tattoos--a chest piece and extensive forearm work--three of which reference the state of Ohio (including the cities of Akron and Cleveland), which is why I have dubbed him Rubber City Boy.

Other items of note in the ink: in the right front forearm tattoo it looks as though there is the number 87 and and Aries sign (I think), which might be a birthday clue.

Other items of note found with the body: A pair of black sweatpants (XL), white thermal underwear (M), and white underwear (the ME does not indicate what type, but does say they are Fruit of the Loom brand).
