You all are as much a bookworm as the people who read for hours every day.

I’ve noticed as of late that there’s a rather frustrating and disturbing trend here on tumblr with exotic pet owners, so let’s make one thing clear; A vast majority of the blogs on here are not vets. We are mostly hobbyists, a couple breeders here and there.

When you come to us in a panic about your reptile acting unusually or having been hurt, there is only so much we can do, even if the blogger you’re asking is a vet. This is the internet, and no ammount of pictures you supply or descriptions you use will be as good as a qualified herp vet who can hands-on examine your pet.

If what is going on is worrying enough for you to ask if something is wrong and you can’t find out through a google search, you should be taking that animal to a vet and not relying on the individuals on here to fix the problem. ESPECIALLY do not blame them when things take a turn for the worst and your animal dies, because you didn’t take it to a vet.

And if the reason you’re asking online rather than taking your pet to a vet is because you don’t think the animal is worth the money of a vet visit, you should not have that animal.

And if it’s due to a lack of funds, donations are always nice, but you should give CareCredit a look as well, as fundraisers are not all that reliable.

Hang on, now. Yes, something like a leg hanging off, or a tail twisted like it’s on a lathe - that’s an obvious vet visit. If your animal is suffering actual physical trauma, vet now, don’t be disingenuous and pretend you didn’t know that gangrene is a bad sign.

But if it’s just unusual, yeah, absolutely ask first - there are some things in herpetoculture that don’t come up on care sheets (sperm plugs?) and if there’s no visual sign of trauma to the animal, you usually have enough time to ask someone who may know better for advice. You may still end up at the vet - or you may need a husbandry correction, and the vet is usually going to do sweet-fuck-all for that problem, unless they’re one of the very rare exotics vets who is a herpetoculturist and isn’t reading anapsid.org.

And when you get that advice, google the shit out of that advice. Or ask the person how they came by that advice. For every single care tip I’ve ever posted, I can give you my reasoning and usually where I picked it up (older breeder, experience, etc.).

Plus there’s some stuff that doesn’t even need to be corrected. Do you know how many times I’ve seen someone panicking because “something is sticking through [their] ball python’s skin” and it turns out to be the snake’s god damn spurs? That would a super embarrassing vet visit, and you can bet they’d be charged the full cost for the exam too.

In general, on going behavioral things because of husbandry errors or the like can be treated better with advice from experienced hobbyist, and small stuff like minor scrapes will be better off treated at home. Sudden changes in behavior (that don’t correlate to seasonal stuff, like breeding or winter fasting), or injuries more serious than that scrapes or rubs (or in an area that can effect their normal behavior like the mouth or eyes), or minor injuries that escalate due to infection or re-injury should be seen to by a qualified reptile vet.
