Lute is a Huge Lesbian in the Comphet Trenches and Here's Why
Disclaimer: Yes I know Lute's VA and general fandom like to pitch Lute as being bisexual. This post isn't here to invalidate that reading of her character, but until we get explicit confirmation about Lute's sexuality, I like to have my own headcanons until proved otherwise. This also isn't a post to say Lute is 100% a lesbian in the text, I'm just putting out one interpretation of many.
First you might be thinking, Ink what the hell are you talking about? Do you see how horrendously down bad Lute is for Adam? How can she be a lesbian?
Lemme cook.
I want to posit the idea that Lute's "attraction" to Adam is less about who he was to her, but what she was able to gain from Adam. Walk with me here.
A very interesting detail about Adam's exorcist army is that it's in stark contrast to the power structures of Heaven. It seems like Heaven works almost as a matriarchy, where the most highest and authoritative figure is the Speaker of God with Sera right behind her.
In contrast Adam's army is patriarchal, he's the one man leading a group of women. Women, who all share the same body type, haircut, and eye color. It's not hard to view this as a misogynistic power trip for Adam, where he is in control of a bunch of attractive women who have no choice but to obey him or face corporal punishment.
As of writing, we don't really know much of the exorcist angels prior to the formation of the army. They could have been created for the purpose of being exorcists or have been winners who were recruited by Adam in a weird cult shit manner. But, we can at least gather that Lute has been living under this power structure for a very long time to the point that she doesn't know how to function without it.
Keep walking with me here.
If you're familiar with conservative women, you might have seen the way they perform (often white) femininity and heterosexuality. Well, that's because under a power structure focused on patriarchy, women while treated as inherently lesser, are actually granted an amount of privilege and prestige for performing these expected gender roles. Think about how white feminity is coveted and weaponized to harm other marginalized groups.
Furthermore, people raised as women know this: from childhood we are ingrained with the idea that a romantic relationship with a man is our ultimate end goal. Even if we grow up and have successful careers, we're still expected to settle down (with a man) and have children (with a man), and to fail that is to fail at being a woman and a human being—this is comphet in a nutshell. It's why a lot of lesbians can feel disconnected from womanhood because it's hard to imagine yourself as a woman without a man to validate it for you.
...Sound familiar?
It's very clear that the angels in the exorcist army weren't treated well, which is bound to fuck anyone up if you live in that structure long enough. Lute herself, even with her position as Adam's right hand woman is called a "dumb bitch" or given derogatory nicknames like "Danger Tits". So it seems to cope with this, Lute plays into Adam's idea of the ideal soldier, a woman who is obedient to him, follows his orders, and carries out his ideals and actions. And this seems to have granted her a degree of privilege over the others, becoming his lieutenant and giving her a sense of purpose. She gets to enact violence over her sisters in arms, giving her a feeling of power over the others. Adam not only matches, but enables and validates her genocidal freak.
Now notice how following Adam's death, Lute's voice is often talked over and dismissed by everyone else in Heaven. Girl's having a visible mental breakdown and yet nobody really cares that this is happening to her.
Lute's personhood was inherently tied to her proximity to Adam, and I think that's why it's possible that she confused it with romantic feelings. She doesn't really love Adam in a normative sense, she loves that she got to be a person with importance by being with him and being validated by him.
And let's not forget the giant elephant in the room, Vaggi.
I think a lot of people see this line as Lute just talking about Vaggi's relationship to Charlie as disgusting because it's an angel and demon, and I think that's dismissive. While it can be that it's primarily Vaggi being an angel and Charlie being a demon, there is a pretty clear implication that it can be read as homophobic too considering Adam doesn't contest Lute's description of the relationship but DOES call it "hot as fuck", playing into the age old notions of sapphic women only existing to be sexualized for the male gaze.
Lute harbors a lot of hate against Vaggi (and Charlie to a somewhat lesser extent), but is it just because she sees Vaggi as weak and a traitor against Heaven? Lute sings about how Charlie was the one to take Adam away from her, yet she saw clear as day that it was Niffty who did the job. It'd make sense for her to direct her hate towards Niffty, but we see her fixate specifically on Vaggi and Charlie.
Could it be possible that Lute, at least on some subconscious level, is envious that Vaggi managed to escape the army and got to be her own person without Adam, or any man? And on top of that, having a healthy relationship with another woman? If so, it's no wonder she directs a lot of hate towards her and Charlie. She doesn't think it's possible for a person like Vaggi to exist without being a threat to Lute's entire worldview.
All of this to say, does this excuse Lute's actions? HELL FUCKING NO, I'm just a general advocate for more evil femmes in media. Lesbians aren't a monolith and honestly I like to examine readings into messier depictions of lesbianism.
Closing thoughts... idk maybe after decades of therapy Lute should get over Adam and date a butch.
Dion is a young African American transman from Texas and comes from a long line of Watchmakers.
He named himself after his Great Grandpa, Dion. Who he knew for the first 6 years of his life. He would spend a lot of time with his great grandpa and learn what he could about watches. He grew up in a very religious household, he was a pastor's kid and his community was quite bigoted toward queer people. He came out as trans to his parents and moved in with a friend of his.
Dion volunteered at an animal shelter and loved taking care of the rabbits.
Dion died in a snowstorm in 2021 while saving his shelter bunnies from freezing to death.
They now reside in heaven making and fixing watches for winners and angels alike. They also spend their off time hanging out in their qp polycule with Abel, Emily, and Peter.
He is a vegetarian after questioning how meat in heaven works if a lot of winners are very animal-like in appearance.
Dion is learning to deal with his religious guilt around being trans.
More fun facts
Dion has paw prints on his ears because he accidentally kept stepping on them and tripping over them when he first got to heaven.
He always has snacks in his clock themed bag (not shown)
He has golden top surgery scars.
He's always cold
Tends to use Abel as a pillow
Makes the BEST Mac and cheese and cornbread
He has many rabbit like tendencies, including flopping when comfortable, thumping when anxious or fussy, chinning, and honking.
Ain't he precious

The concept of Lute being a lesbian with massive comphet has been rotating around in my head... but if I make a post explaining why, will I get cooked or not...
