Upon Cuphead trying to cast the healing spell, Ales felt a gentle tingle where the cut was, however it seemed to do very little, and the cut refused to budge. He stared at it for a little while, as if expecting the spell to slowly take effect. Nothing happened. A look of disappointment flashed across his eyes, but he didn’t seem particularly bothered.

“Healing magic isn’t that easy,” he admitted, “I don’t really know much of it myself. If you really want to learn, a Teensie Doctor would be your best bet.” Scratching at the skin around the cut, being sure to keep his nails away from it, the Teensie tilted his head to one side in thought.

He eventually rolled down his sleeve with a shake of his head, “Don’t really even have any advice for you, either.” Ales shrugged. He placed his hands on his hips, “Why not show me some of your other magic? You know, the stuff you’ve already practiced.”

Practicing his magic was something that Cuphead had unfortunate experiences with... being that most of his practice was near and sometimes actual death related. “Let’s see...” He starts, tapping his chin as he figures out what to show off. “Oh! Here’s a trick Chalice taught me!” 

Cuphead focuses for a moment, then a pink heart floats out from his chest- and a ghostly figure matching Cuphead forms around it. It only lasts a few seconds, though, before it fades and the heart returns where it belongs. “Technically, my soul’s in my head, but the spell works in a weird way.” He shrugs. “That one’s saved my life a few times, though.”

“Buzz off, bub, You don’t know what he’s gone through! Trauma is hard enough to deal with without people like you tryin’ to make folks feel worse about themselves! Ya wanna pick a fight? Take up boxing and leave people alone if they ain’t in the ring!”

“Hey, [name]! That was some nice work out there.” 

“You know, you really… reach people, when you try.”

“You did good. You know that, right?”

“That was impressive.” 

“How did you figure that out?”

“You helped. That’s something to be proud of.”

“It’s okay. Hey, [name]. You’re okay, you did it.”

“It could have been a lot worse. Give yourself some credit.”

“I like you just like this, you know. You don’t have to be perfect.”

“Hey. We did everything we could.”

“They’re safe – hey! They’re safe. Let’s focus on you for a minute, okay?” 

“Everyone’s been evacuated, you were the last out. Let’s get you checked out.”

“You’ve been helping all of them? Alone?”

“Sometimes you do your best work and things are still shitty. That’s just how it goes.”

“I’ve never seen you like that before.”

“You’re not psychic. You couldn’t have known.” 

“I’m right here. You found me in time, I’m right here.”

“It’s over. Hey! It’s over. Everyone’s safe. You did that.”

“These people wouldn’t be alive if it weren’t for you.”

“I wouldn’t be alive if it weren’t for you.”

“Where did you learn to [fight/issue orders/do first aid/etc] like that?”

“There was nobody in the building, [name]. You got them all out.”

Mouthy little brat.

Saltbaker is quick on the take, and catches up with them and their short little legs with a brisk stride, knife still in hand. The hallway is long, dark, and underground. The only way out the trap door. With a sneer growing ever-wider, he reaches for Cuphead’s handle - if he snagged one, the other surely wouldn’t abandon him,

“You think I’d let you leave?! I don’t know whether to be glad or insulted that such a pair of dim-witted waifs could have jeopardised what I’ve worked for!”

As the two cups make a break down the hallway towards the trap door that would lead them out, they could hear the stomping behind them as Saltbaker attempted to catch up. Quick thinking honed in the past could only go so far; allowing the two to react quickly to unexpected obstacles in front of them. 

Unfortunately, neither of them were focusing behind them- and Cuphead finds himself grabbed by the handle and pulled up and away from his brother. “Wha-hey! Lemme go!” He shouts, wiggling and trying to reach behind him to get free, as futile as that was. Cuphead certainly was not the type to go down without a fight. 

“Cuphead..!” Mugman cries out, turning as he hears his brother shout. Oh boy, he’d have to fight to get him back, wouldn’t he?

“Oh! it seems we won’t be pulling any straws after all,” he croons, and part of him contemplates trying to take the mug simply out of spite, but if Cuphead is oh-so brave, then who is he to be picky?

He lets the knife twirl idly between a couple fingers, before flicking upright. “Did you two honestly think you could bring someone back to life with no quid-pro-quo? You bid me resurrect Chalice - this is the price, my little ones.”

“You never told us about this until just now!” Cuphead retorts. “How were we supposed to know one of our souls was going to be required for this thing?” In all honesty, they’d find some other way to bring her back. There had to be some other way out there somewhere. 

With his brother turning and making a break for the exit, Cuphead moves to join him. As much as he was prepared for a fight, Cuphead didn’t want to have to go through a brawl if he didn’t have to... he certainly had enough fighting done back in the whole debtor debacle and again here. He’d never get why he wouldn’t be able to do anything without some sort of fight.

Headcanon time!

Cuphead can be fiercely protective of those he cares about. He'll put himself in harm's way to defend you if he cares about you, though he also is the type to be like 'Hey nobody can mess with them but me' too, since he'll often mess with the folks he cares about.

If you've known him long enough though it's easy to tell when he's just messing with you and when he is actually taunting someone.

“Well, boys, we’re certainly in a pickle. I need only one soul for the Wondertart, yet I have two little cups. Shall we decide with rock-paper-scissors? Eeeny-meeny? Drawing straws, perhaps? Hm-hm.” 

Immediately, Cuphead moves to place himself between Mugman and Saltbaker. “How about you forget the whole ‘wondertart’ thing if it’s gonna cost one of our souls?!” Mugman might be terrified of the idea a fight is brewing again, but Cuphead’s ready to brawl if it comes right down to it!

“Let loose? You do a bit more than just ‘let loose, Cuphead. It gets both of us into big trouble!” There were many times where Cuphead’s attitude of not caring much about the consequences of his actions had a negative effect for them both, but he wouldn’t drag them up just to prove a point unless he had to.

1- More often than not, the bros will be eating homecooked foods, made with the veggies grown in their Elder Kettle’s garden!

2- Not too sure, honestly. Sorry!

3- The Fairgrounds, if there’s one in town. If not, then usually around downtown.

4- Cuphead’s a natural at the piano!
