how do i know when im done planning? im currently making character sheets, but it seems a little too excessive? but i also don't want to start plotting and writing without fully understanding who my characters are. any tips?
How to Know When You’re Done Outlining: A Simple Test
You’re done outlining when your anxiety about actually writing your story is your biggest motivation to keep outlining. That goes for world building, character sheets, online research, obsessively reading writing advice blogs, and all the rest of it. Remember: You can always come back to your outline later! Beginning your story doesn’t doom you to leaving outlining land forever.
As a personal aside, I’ve honestly ruined more stories by outlining too much than I have by setting aside my outline and starting to write too early. No matter how well you outline, writing is a big, messy, scary discovery process. You can try to avoid that by staying in the safe world of the outline (where everything works perfectly and goes according to plan) forever and ever… but in my experience that only leads to a state of mind where actually writing becomes increasingly scary and elusive.
Lastly, remember that you can’t know everything about your story or characters before you start. As seductive as that idea is, at a certain point you have to take the leap into the unknown and see what emerges.

Top 10 Tips for Actually Writing
for the writer who can’t seem to write.
Buy a pencil and paper. Get a writing program and a keyboard.
Spill all your ideas into a notebook that will never see the light of day. Write down literally every idea you have that even sort of relates to the scene/chapter/book that you want to write until your thoughts converge on a pointed attack.
Quality vs. Quantity? No competition. Quantity all the way. The more you write, the better you will know your story. Worry about Quality LATER.
Think about where the idea came from. Go there. Set up a cardboard box and live there. This is your home now.
What is the coolest, most self-indulgent thing you can think of? That’s what you want to write at this point, until you get some steam.
Short-term goals, my friends. And by short-term, I mean a minute from now, ten seconds from now. What are you going to do to write RIGHT NOW? Stop thinking about an hour from now, stop thinking about a day from now.
This is not a book. This is not a book. You are not writing a book. You are writing a story. A story is much easier to take bites out of than a book. A book is a big, scary, colossal thing. Stories are fun and carefree.
Get yourself a writing friend. A cactus, an old bottle of nail polish, a fish in an appropriately sized tank, etc. Make them hold you accountable.
Set crazy low goals. Promise yourself you will write ten words today. Ten words and you will be the Best Writer in the Entire World to Ever Exist. Accomplishing things is a morale booster and will urge you to write more.
Just keep writing. I believe in you.

Halah marries Raoul because her sister doesn’t want to, her country needs allies, and there’s a mantle of destiny about him that calls to her. She tells her mother, ‘I can grow to love him’, and when she says it, she’s telling the truth.
But four months into her marriage, her husband has gone to the borders to quell the encroachment of invaders from the empire to the west and seems to spare hardly a thought for her, the Mourran court turn their noses up at her, and she has never felt so lonely nor bitter. She doesn’t know how she would cope were it not for her friendship with Queen Sirin and her time spent with little prince Qusaiy.
Everything changes when the king finally succumbs to his illness…and Sirin is accused of murdering him through witchcraft. Halah swears to look after Sirin’s son as best as she can, and she intends to keep that promise, even in the face of the terrifying upheavals at court and the sinister machinations of the late king’s sister.
So when a strange man breaks through the window to steal the prince away in the dead of night, Halah is ready and willing to kill this intruder or die trying––until he claims to be sent on behalf of her husband. She’s not sure she believes him, but she won’t let him spirit the heir to the throne away without her.
“I’m coming with you,” she says. She doesn’t give him the chance to refuse her.

Learn how to take planned breaks
Plan reward when you reach your goals
If goals are time framed based, make sure they’re realistic. Nothing is more discouraging then thinking you’re failing
Engage with other writers who are positive and excited about their work.
Read books in your genre of passion. Remind yourself why you’re writing one!
Have more than one project to jump to if one starts to get stuck.
Make writing time special, with snacks, music, candles - things you ONLY let yourself have during writing time.
If your schedule allows, try writing at the same time every day. If its a habit, you won’t drag your feet as much.
Talk to other writers! Tell them why you write! Even if you just scream it into the void that is Tumblr, writing it down and putting it into words is a powerful reminder of why you want to complete this project.
Add your own, because sometimes writing starts to feel bogged down to me too, and I could always use more help

Intro:
Hello everyone! My name is Charley and I’m new to writeblr.
I finally got over the trepidation around creating this blog and now here I am, ready to share my journey as an author with the community and hopefully make friends along the way.
This will be my first novel, though I have tried my hand at writing a few before but halted them. I also write poetry sometimes but predominantly this blog will deal with the process of worldbuilding and writing my first draft of my WIP ‘Fortress of Bones’.

I love video games, comic books and graphic novels, reading all the things and binging netflix. I’m also now a succulent mum and have taken to the hippie pursuits of yoga and meditation.
During my childhood I always had a fascination with other worlds, with fairytales and monsters and strange, wonderful lands. So it seems inevitable then that I became a writer of speculative fiction. Like many of you I’m sure, I love worldbuilding and constructing languages because it allows me the freedom of letting my imagination loose.
Now, as a woman with an academic background in creative writing, I’m trying to make my way as an author - a dream for so many.
Novel:
Fortress of Bones is a young adult tale full of fantasy and horror. Following Sindra, a princess looking for the truth of her father’s murder who finds herself imprisoned and Kalyan, a mysterious man who sees an an opportunity to escape within her, the story delves into what it means to survive vs what it means to live.
Borrowing from both Norse and Indian culture and mythology, I hope to weave together a novel of intrigue and emotion that provides a diverse cast of characters and plenty of intrigue.
