i genuinely think shanerot is a thing because i have it and my brain hasnt been able to process and comprehend things because im always thinking of him
honestly anyone who compares any stardew characters traumatic backstory with anotherâs as a way of feeling superior or validating why they like a character who starts off as kind of rude feels icky.
BUT ESPECIALLY in shaneâs case, âhaley changes unl-â who ever says shit like that is, and i say this with my full chest, ANTI-RECOVERY and also.. probably has a sprinkle of classism, fatphobia and general ableism.
shane is a recovering alcoholic, he is in recovery through out most of his cutscenes. heâs going to therapy, cutting back on how MUCH he drinks (which is important!! cutting back is alot more effective than cutting off! him having a beer every once in a while is not shane ânot changingâ, thats him knowing when he should stop and finally being able too..) he is actively suicidal when the farmer meets him, he isnât just going to immediately stop drinking or never have mental issues again just cause he has a partner now, heâs going to have his ups and downs and heâs going to relapse sometimes but thats not him choosing to not change!! thats just how it is when you have been so codependent on a substance for years and decide to quit it!!
i dont really understand the classism and fatphobia point? and i don't think theyre anti recovery, i think they just don't understand the way addiction works and just shanes character in general.
and for the last point, theres wayyyyy too many people that marry shane/like shane because hes the "i can fix him" character in the fandom and it always gives me a bad feeling. so many of them its super annoying that they expect him to quit completely and be a little angel that does no wrong just because... theyre married and he got fixed with just love? and when he drinks (after marriage), they all get pissy because they dont actually understand addiction works and/or because they don't actually understand his character in general. it's so upsetting to me how shane, the depressed, suicidal and alcoholic man has just become the "i can fix him character".
Gonna be honest and say that I donât even think shane is rude heâs just not very nice. (Obviously all early on) first meeting he says the thing why are you talking to me I donât know you. Which is a) true and b) not that bad heâs just like bruh who are you man. Okay woah not very friendly like most of the town but just how it is sometimes
And I feel like no one ever considers the actual situation afterwards. If you keep talking to him despite him very obviously wanting to be left alone and have somewhat made it clear the first time thatâs on you?? He SAID leave him alone. The player isnât respecting that and keeps talking to him. Obviously in stardew valley it all works out happy ending they get married yeah yeah everythingâs okay but. In the real world if you keep bothering a guy who tells you to Leave Him Alone and he starts saying stuff like âwhat do you wantâ âgo awayâ that is literally entirely on the person who doesnât listen to him and you know, leave him alone?? It is so insane to me that people act like heâs the worst, acting like you said hi and he went âfuck you and your entire family I hope you die in a [redacted]â. Okay, Iâll agree that heâs not nice. But It is genuinely crazy to me that people agree that heâs apparently such a huge jerk. I think weâre all used to the town being really welcoming and warm and friendly so when heâs like that itâs unexpected and a bit of a shock, and I also understand being sensitive to stuff like this (no hate to that at all)
But I do not understand people who think others actually own them conversation just becauseâŚ? and when someone doesnât want to be bothered they are somehow lacking in personal morality. That is wild to me. Is it weird? Yeah maybe depends on where youâre from. Does it say something about who they are as a person? Probably not. At least less than they think.
I guess the fact that Stardew is expected to be a wholesome warm fuzzy game also plays into it. Like why are you like this itâs stinking up my cozy little game etc etc. And I get that but I donât think itâs fair because Shaneâs thing is not the only heavy topic in this game. Alex dealing with a parental loss and iirc also past abuse from his father!! Pamâs alcoholism and as a result putting Penny through so much bullshit and responsibility she shouldnât have had to shoulder!! Kent is a former pow with ptsd!! And more thatâs âmilderâ but still not all sunshines and rainbows. I know Stardew has the reputation of being cozy and warm and itâs true but that is mostly due to the players saying it themselves. There was no promise that there would not be heavier topics in the game at all. And itâs also handled well (not like uhh sudden horror twists or stuff) and is not otherwise very âout of placeâ so yeah itâs not fair to expect that from the game or him.

the reason people make out shane to be ruder than he actually is is because they compare him to the other villagers that say hi and are friendly blah blah blah. it's also just expected for people to be friendly or atleast be "decent" (for a lack of a better word?) when you talk to them (or when they talk to you). when someone doesnt want to talk, theyre expected to not be so blunt and be like "oh sorry, i dont really wanna talk right now" and not be as direct as shane is.
i dont really agree with the "stardew valley is made out to be a cozy game". while i understand where you're coming from, most people don't mind the heavy topics, what they do care about is the way shane acts. ive never seen people complaining about penny's, alex's, or kent's stories which contain heavy topics. they're easier to sympathize with because the characters are nice.
I'm so glad blogs that defend Shane like yours exist, as weird and cringe as it is to admit that, it sometimes feels kinda bad and isolating when almost the whole fandom hates your favorite character (especially when you relate and heavily identify with them)
I love Shane man, he's a great character and it bumms me out when people make fun of him or other people who like him...
NO YES it makes me feel bad watching people make fun of him or hate him because theres so many people (including me) that relate to him. he's such a real character to me and watching people just say the stuff they say about him makes me SUPER upset because i know for a fact that they have a person like this in their life, whether they're an alcoholic, depressed or suicidal. he will always be the best character to me, not just in sdv, but in all the media i see. he represents addiction and depression so well and realistically (atleast that's what i think).
the way that he's rude when you first meet him, the way pushes you away but gets nicer once you persist and get to know him better, these dialogues, "You're really persistent. I guess I'm just surprised that anyone would be interested in talking to me.", "Hey. Sorry if I came off as rude when we first met. It takes me a while to warm up to strangers.", HIS 4TH AND 6TH HEART EVENTS, the way he doesn't stop completely drinking after marriage. to me, it's super perfect and really shows how badly depression can affect you and how addiction cant just come to a sudden stop. his character is so human to me, and it really makes me wonder how shane haters are towards real people that deal with the same kind of stuff shane does. i dont know if im reaching, but shane's character is just SO realistic (i know ive already said that but i hope you know that i mean it).
shane haters are so annoying cause i KNOW them fucks would see a homeless person on the street and immediately go to call the fucking cops on them.
also going cold turkey is literally one of the worst ways to get over an addiction. shane hatere are so pro-recovery until its actually not just âstop drinkingâ
theyre the type to say "why cant you just stop (insert bad habit/coping mechanism)"
im genuinely convinced that most of them have never experienced addiction or anything similar. if they did, they would know that addiction doesn't just stop as if youre hitting the brakes. its a constant battle of cravings and relapses and i really need more people to understand that đ¤Śââď¸

Dannie x Shane
Angst. Hurt. Cliffhanger?
Shane didnât know how to deal with these feelings at first. He began to feel this way about Dannie after a year of dealing with the farmer. Oh, how he desperately tried to deny those feelings, waving them off as admiration of their strong bond. But the heart wants what it wants, and Shaneâs heart desperately wanted Dannie.
One day, after mulling over the idea and playing it out in his head, Shane was ready to tell Dannie. He shot Dannie a quick text, his fingers shakily gliding over the screen.
Shane: âHey, you busy?â
Dannie: âNope, watching some cartoons with Vale. You?â
Shane: âBored out of my mind.â
Shane: âWhy donât you drop Valentina off here with Marnie and Jas? They wouldnât mind. And we can go out for drinks?â
Dannie: âSounds good. Weâll be there in a minute.â
It really did feel like a minute, what with their farms being so close to one another. With a soft knock, Dannie walked in with Valentina in his arms. He smiled as he saw Shane leaning against the counter waiting for them. He could hear the TV in the other room, assuming Marnie and Jas were already there.
âHey, got here quick, huh?â Shane teased, pushing himself off the counter and walking over to Dannie.
âWho says no to drinks with their best friend?â Dannie teased right back, a low chuckle escaping his lips as that smile of his remained on his lips.
There was some quick conversation between everyone before Dannie eventually dropped Valentina off with Marnie, him and Shane then leaving the house. When Shane started making his way to the lake and not the saloon, Dannie raised his brow.
âI thought you said weâre getting a drink?â he asked, keeping at Shaneâs side.
âWe are, I justâŚwanted a quiet night tonight. I miss it just being us, yâknow?â Shane replied with a nervous laugh. His heart raced thinking about what was to come.
The two made it to the lake, taking a seat at the old, rickety dock. It was a familiar spot for them, Dannie often swinging by to make sure Shane was okay. Tonight, itâd have a whole new meaning. The two spoke about everything, casually speaking amongst drinks, able to tell each other anything.
Dannie and Shane were about a beer and a half in, when Shane finally had enough of his brainâs yelling. This was it, he was going to tell Dannie.
âHey, Dan? Could IâŚask you something?â Shane asked, his voice slightly shaky. His cheeks already being pink from the alcohol was not helping.
Dannie raised his eyebrow, picking up on Shaneâs shaky tone. âOf course,â he nodded gently.
Shane nearly held his breath, not ready and ready at the same time. His grip on the aluminum can tightening and crinkling under his hold. His eyes met Dannieâs before he began to speak.
âDannie, you have becomeâŚpretty much the closest person to me. Whenever I need a shoulder to cry on, it's you. I can't think of the past two years without thinking of your smiling face. IâŚI think Iâm in love with you. And..I was wondering if youâdâŚmaybe want to start going out?â
As for Dannie, he sat there in stunned silence. He let out a quiet huff of laughter, shaking his head softly.
âYou're kidding, right? That was a joke? You actually liking me?â he asked, raising his brow. He didn't have that playful edge in his tone like he usually had, making Shane panic.
âW-What? No! I..I really do love you! Do youâŚnot feel the same?â he muttered, almost bitterly knowing the answer. Of course this would be the answer. Why would Dannie like me?
âShane. Weâre both dudes. Two guysâŚ.they can't date. They donât date. It's not natural,â Dannie added, a small frown growing on his lips as he spoke. He finished off his beer, setting the can down beside him and standing up.
âIâm going to go get Valentina and go back to the farm. âŚI don't want anyone knowing about this. Weâre friendsâŚbut Iâm not queer, Shane,â Dannie said sternly, eyeing Shane down with disappointment before walking off. His boots echoing and growing distant as he walked off.
Shane sat there, stunned, heartbroken even. He expected Dannie to reject him because, well, it's him. Whoâd want to date him? But thisâŚthis was worse.
Iâve started just thinking of the ridiculous amount of people hating on post marriage shane saying how heâs rude (???) or mean (??) as thatâs just because he doesnât love them. Because he loves me. Because heâs mine. I recommend to do this. Get more insane every day
