Kendrick Lamar has made a statement yet again. On Friday at midnight (March 4), the Compton rapper surprised fans with Untitled, Unmastered almost a year after dropping his Grammy-winning sophomore album, To Pimp a Butterfly. Untitled is an eight-track collection of cuts recorded between 2013 and 2016 but serves as an important declaration of independence for K. Dot, according to Top Dawg Entertainment Co-President Terrence “Punch” Henderson.

Watch Fleet Foxes’ Robin Pecknold Play A New Song In Holland

It's weird how closely the trajectories of Fleet Foxes and Bon Iver have mirrored each other. In 2008, both bands released massively influential debut albums that helped put beardy white male folk-rock at the forefront of indie-rock for a while, and both bands returned with more expansive offerings in 2011, rising to festival headliner status before disappearing off the face of the Earth. And now, just as Bon Iver is reactivating, Fleet Foxes frontman Robin Pecknold is opening for Joanna Newsom on tour and debuting new material. Now, as Reddit points out, one of those new songs has made its way to YouTube. Recorded at Doornroosje in the Dutch city of Nijmegen, it sounds like the skeleton of a fantastic Fleet Foxes track. Joanna Newsom — Divers (Drag City)

Joanna Newsom’s first album in five years — following a period when she got married, sang the theme to the Muppet Show and narrated Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice — is a very assured and cohesive set of songs, melding Newsom’s prickly lyric sensibility and cracked, idiosyncratic singing style with lush arrangements.   She continues, here, to work the kinks out of her singing style, sanding down the rough, frictive element that, to me, made the prettiness palatable.   Just enough of the croak remains, in the crevices and interstices of her lyrics, to keep things interesting, but it’s a waning element, and some day, one supposes, it will disappear altogether.   

In the decade or so that she’s spent making her voice less distinctive, however, Newsom has also been working hard on the music framing it. With Divers, the balance tips.   The arrangements are more intricate, expectation-confounding and interesting than the voice that inhabits then.   The lyrics, knotty and internally rhythm-driven as ever, execute complicated step dances in a shifting architecture of motif, cadence and countermelody.
