It was quick, sudden when the darkspawn came up behind Cassandra. Everyone else seemed to be busy fighting off the other creatures the rift spawned.
Cassandra didn’t seem to notice, so Varric did the honors and ran up to it, getting a good aim on it and shot it with Bianca. It went down pretty quickly. He grinned triumphantly as Cassandra turned around and looked at him.
“Don’t say I don’t do anything for you, Seeker.” It might surprise others that Varric protected a person that interrogated him, seemed to blame him for almost everything, and just always budded heads with. He still had sympathy and it wouldn’t sit right with him if he let Cassandra be attacked when he could’ve done at least something.
He rolled his eyes when he heard Sera chuckle, ready for one of her teasings. But it actually surprised him that Sera remarked to the inquisitor for her to hurry up and get the rift closed.
Stamina was running low, and so it came to the defense after aggression exerted itself. The shield melding with her movements, pushing forth to stagger from the front, that moment taken advantage of as sword pressed onward, ripping through flesh as a last breath was released from her opponent, her own held breath falling from her lips in relief.
But it was not over, she was slow to have missed it and it could’ve costed her gravely- if not for the dwarf. Turning around, a darkspawn laid at her boots and eyes met with a grinned face. For others she would thank- and she was GRATEFUL, do not mistake.
But Varric was unbearable under most occasions- this would make it even worse. To now OWE him something. Waiting for Sera to pull her attention elsewhere before struggling with her words, “I- Thank you, Varric.” how it burned to swallow pride and say that. “You did not have to do that.”
and why he would... eyes watching him cautiously, and even with all this time the doubts lingered. Or perhaps it was bitterness- at the failure of her interrogation that time ago. But he was proving worthy of trust, earning his place- and surely it could not all be a farce.
“But do not mention this to anyone.”
The saving her life- the gratitude and softness she just showed, ANY of it. As if they would believe it... “and it better not end up spun into something more in your stories.”
