Always check the bugs before going shopping!
Just had a stupid moment, my boyfriends Millipede died a week ago and he left it in its box so I found a tutorial on how to preserve bugs with hand sanitizer and asked Andy if I can do that then seal him in some resin another time. Anyways he agreed and I went to the shops to get a jar and some sanitizer and decided to open the box outside only to realise that Maggots got their first :(
They ate enough that his body snapped in half when I picked the Millipede up so I just cleaned the tank. It was my fault i should of checked before deciding to preserve lol
Well now I have no creepy crawlies due to the fact my baby passed away last week, Voltigore did not survive it's molt i left it there for 24 hours and realised there was no sign of movement or progressing during the molt
Turns out the left side of the legs did not manage to pump any blood causing Voltigore not being able to push out of it's molt :(
Ants, they are much smarter than you think
Fun Fact: Ants are pretty much an insect that creeps me out
As much as I love insects it's the fact of how superior they can actually be but also the fact they go in a formation in grups and an army.
I know this blog is to promote bugs but different species do many things to survive. I watched this hour documentary called "Ant's Natures Secret" which I suggest people to watch, you will have a better insight about Ants.
One thing I really like is about Mealey Bugs, Ants hunt for food, most insects get hunted in groups and used to feed their queen however ants actually protect Mealey bugs which is a bug that drinks sweetness from plants.
Ants carry Mealey bugs to the sweetest of saplings allowing them to drink and keeps them away from danger by crowding over their backs. After it's time to return home they carry each Mealey bug back, youngsters by their mouths and the mothers on their head. This is so they can drink the liquid when they pass it through their body.
Ants actually found an insect of use and salvage them to keep to their own well being and survive.
Last week I handled and saw a millipede for the first time, this is an African black millipede (female) and I was shocked by how many legs they have, I could see the millipede maneuvering its legs around whilst curled up into a ball. This one had mites on it however these are safe mites, Millipedes home them so the mites clean their legs and they actually move the mites around their body by pushing them with their legs.
There was one surprise that I encountered, I knew that millipedes secrete a defensive liquid however I thought it escapes out of their skin, but oh no a little opening from behind pushes the liquid out! That was a strange encounter.
This is something my boyfriend currently owns, Andy has about 4 Rodatzi snails and he got them when they were very tiny! They do grow fast, they are a type of African snail and this is the biggest we got.
I did a photo shoot of them last week and I might be wrong but I think they might of been attracted to the reflection because they kept twisting themselves to their reflection like they were trying to approach it.
Very cute ey?
This is the only thing I own at the moment, I would like to say I am a beginner at having my own pet creepy crawlies. I did have some other species but sadly they didn't survive so once it gets warmer and I get my own place I am planning on collecting more.
This is my Chilean Rose "Voltigore" named after the alien character on Half-Life the video game. It is a weird name my parents call him Boris because they prefer that.
Nothing much to say about Voltigore, it's a very active Chilean likes to (attempt) to climb and loves to spring about left and right doing little dances with his feet. Voltigore has a lot of diets (does my skin make me look fat?) and I have never witnessed a molt yet.
A designer who has other interests
Hello everyone! I thought it's about time to look into my other interests and share my love for bugs. My name is Laura Smith I come from the alias of L-saurus which is my graphic design name. I have had a specific blog on design for a while but quite a lot of people have been asking about my bug interests.
I have been interested in insects for a while since I was young however become more fond of them just recently (thanks to my boyfriend). When I began showing bugs to Andy he started buying a few and it has made me even more fascinated on how they experience their lives, what the functions of their bodies are for and what rituals do they perform.
On here you will see photographs on insects ill try to take, online discoveries by me of what insects do in simple writing, maybe insect related design and things I discover when attempting to do bug catching when it gets warmer.
So if you are as curious as me on insects then follow this blog however people who are not so keen on bugs, Id advise you to follow too because there is fascinating things about them that may change you perception.
