“I’m feeling very optimistic about the second half of Wish,” I say. Little do I know, the last eleven chapters of Wish are tailored to ruin my day
Hi Red, thoughts on the first half of the new Switch story?
Hey Mihai, thanks for the ask!
I was incredibly nervous about Wish going in. Despite Tsumugi’s eventual haircut being teased since Element, I felt blindsided by this change. A portion of that initial aversion was due to personal preference. I love what Tsumugi’s hair represents and I didn’t want to let that go.
From a narrative standpoint, while I’m generally happy with ES2 Switch stories, I have mixed feelings on the retroactive application of certain aspects of Natsume and Tsumugi’s symbolism to the entirety of Switch. I didn’t want that to happen with Tsumugi’s promise to Natsume. Nor did I want Tsumugi to have a sudden change of heart for the sake of making him a more conventionally attractive anime boy. (I’m very attached to the shag.)
However, given some time to reflect, I’ve warmed up to the idea. The fact that Natsume will be the one cutting Tsumugi’s hair really put me at ease. Plus, the first half of the story makes it clear how much value Tsumugi places on his promise with Natsume.
…Hey, Natsume-kun, once this “thread” between us is cut—will we still be able to stay together forever?
Beyond that, Wish has been a delight thus far. Some highlights from the first eight chapters include:
The NewDi president is finally real! His name is Arata Motosugi (English name order) and he sucks at his job. He stops by Japan to meet EsuPri, announces that he’s firing Tsumugi, and then leaves.
Tsumugi’s reaction to getting fired is to go “this is fine” and then proceed to dissociate in the lobby. Eichi approaches him, and Tsumugi assumes that Eichi may have been behind his termination. He explains that NewDi’s connections with Thunderbolt Entertainment could cause problems for StarPro, and thus Eichi used his investment in NewDi (shout out Wonder Game) to put pressure on Arata to fire Tsumugi and destabilise the agency. Said totally casually, of course—in true Tsumugi fashion.
Eichi denies being involved, saying he isn’t that evil, and Tsumugi doubles down on this being the exact sort of thing Eichi would do. Eichi is so amused by this he invites Tsumugi out to karaoke to celebrate “the day Tsumugi finally took his anger out on him.”
This, predictably, had me losing my mind. But the best part is that Eichi doesn’t even show up. He says that he can’t skip work, thus Tsumugi ends up going to karaoke alone meanwhile Eichi attends via Zoom call. Eichi doesn’t even sing. (Though he does say he thinks Tsumugi’s voice is pleasant and wants to record it as a companion to his work?) If you ask me, Eichi is just afraid of being in close quarters with Tsumugi. With good reason—as Tsumugi compares being fired from NewDi to being dismissed from fine. Once again, in totally casual fashion.
Another reason I call bullshit is because Eichi makes time to go find Natsume and gloat about it. Natsume and (a now asleep) Sora have been waiting in the dorms for Tsumugi to return because no one knows where he is. Even Eichi assumed he went right back after karaoke. Eichi references his speech to Natsume from Altered and says “this doesn’t look like living happily ever after.” He mentions (brags) that he and Tsumugi went to karaoke and Natsume goes “it should’ve been me!” and storms off.
We cut to Tsumugi, and it turns out he went to visit the dance school his mother used to run! It’s now a rundown building, but he sits and reflects on his short time spent there with Natsume. It turns out Tsumugi used to only sit in the corner and watch, but he found himself so enchanted by Natsume that he wanted to participate so he could support him. It’s even confirmed Tsumugi had a crush on Natsume as he says “In retrospect, it must’ve been something like love at first sight.”
And as if I wasn’t winning enough already, it’s revealed that Tsumugi stopped cutting his hair after he met Natsume as a child. He only let it get cut once his mother asked him to, because he didn’t want to cause trouble for her. Which has always been my headcanon so I’m delighted.
The first half ends with Eichi on the phone to Arata threatening him about who knows what. Whether he got Tsumugi fired or is threatening him BECAUSE Tsumugi got fired is still unknown but I am leaning toward the second.
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed my thoughts/highlight reel that ended up being a summary. I’m really happy with the story thus far and how it’s harking back to Element, Pleiades Night, and Wonder Game. I’m feeling very optimistic about the second half.

My conspiracy theory about the next Switch event is that it’s going to be a Big One since Ishikai is coming to the livestream and he never shows up for Enst stuff. And as this event would’ve aligned with Wonder Game’s sixth anniversary if it weren’t for the collab I am begging for Tsumugi’s hair to be longer
I’m trying to think about the interesting aspects of this development but the horn in my brain is blaring LOVE FUCKING LOST I’M SO SORRY

Haii Tysm for the recs! I will keep the ask until i can get to reading. But I actually read litchi light club last year and it prompted a short lived interest in the tokyo grand guignol~ and no need to worry about more gorey recs, i can stomach A Lot if it's drawn. Aaanyway i also wanted to say your wataru play fic sounds phenomenal and i shall wait until 2040 if needed for it. If you have any notes or references for it i'd love to see them^^ but ahh it's 4am here so i will leave for now. Bai baii!
Thank you so much!! I’m juggling quite a few WIPs right now but I’ll keep you updated on any progress I make with the play fic

Someday, Shine With Me...
It's Christmas Eve. It's 1997. You actually went to see the AWESOME Utena Musical over the weekend, and you have rewatched your VHS tape recordings of the last episode a dozen times.
You've been jamming out to Internal Clock, Municipal Orrery. You obtained a time machine to pour over episode commentaries by Ikuhara and Saito that cover the last three episodes. You've already stolen the script from be-Papas' office. You've even got a screencap gallery of it!
You've been watching along with some other internetizens, because forums are cool.
You've been staring at the insane art drop by Akemi Hayashi for this month's Animage Magazine:
You've been pouring over the to-be-released creator commentary, transcribed by Vrai Kaiser, whose articles about Utena have been living rent free in your future head all year:
There are two meanings to the Japanese word utena. One is “the calyx of a flower.” That’s also the meaning of the title, of course. The thing that supports the beautiful petals; the one with the noble heart. And the other meaning of utena is “tall tower or pedestal.” We translated this into a visual: the tower at the center of Ohtori Academy, the one with the Chairman’s room on the top floor. And the dueling arena located deep in the woods is the same. In the early stages of production, when the story wasn’t firmly established yet, this was one of the aspects I most wanted to visualize and produce for the screen. A world where demons roam. In its center, a tower called the “Tower of Revolution.” Whosoever can remain victorious in his battles against the demons can reach the pinnacle of the Tower of Revolution, and at the same time receive the power to revolutionize the world; the power that changes the rules of the world. However, when he reaches the pinnacle, he learns the world’s governing laws. He faces the ultimate choice: will he stay nobly, beautifully powerless? Or will he accept ugliness into himself and gain absolute power? He desired both. Or rather, perhaps he couldn’t choose either. His mind in anguish, he divided himself in two. His “noble heart,” and the “adult with absolute power.” And so. With one last wish that the day would come when someone would awaken him, the “noble heart” that had lost its body, in other words the prince, fell into a deep sleep. Early on in the series’s conception, I kicked around the idea of placing something like the above at the heart of the story. Later, after several changes, it became the tale as you know it, but without a doubt, he did reach the pinnacle of the Tower of Revolution. It was a place where “eternity” dwelled. And “eternity” turned out to mean perpetual sleep. The prince (Akio) who became an adult while in perpetual sleep lost something. What he lost was “the power to create an enjoyable future.” Revolution means gaining “the power to imagine the future.” The prince chose to sleep on, and the princess chose to wake up. At the top of that tall tower, the princess bid farewell to the prince. No – she wasn’t the princess any longer. She quit being “a person (thing) ruled by someone.” The victory bells rang, but there was no “tower (rule)” beyond them now. She’d learned where freedom lay. She crossed the threshold of that “Door of Revolution” which had always been closed to her before, and began walking. The “girl’s revolution” lay in the girl’s future. “Wait for me…Utena.” The world (the stage) is free and wide.
You're not ready for Utena to end. Which is good, because it isn't going to. Not for you. Decades from now, Utena will still be here, speaking to you. Challenging you. Changing you.
I just got hit with the mental image of Eichi cutting Wataru’s hair (think of that one scene in Tangled) and now I’m stuck on it. If you consider PTvD, Eichi cutting Wataru’s hair could mean setting him free. Or it could mean keeping Wataru on a shorter rope. Confused power dynamics and double meanings are very engrained into Wataei’s identity and I’d love to see this concept as one of Eichi’s fever dreams, or something. (While we’re on that note: bring back Eichi’s fever dreams I miss them)
