i wouldn’t say either of the wheeler parents are straight up abusive. i WOULD say ted is a passive, almost neglectful parent who doesn’t take stock in what’s happening in his kids lives, as well as making snide comments that a father shouldn’t be making. and sometimes karen is unaware of what’s going on, but the moment she notices something wrong she cracks down on it and tries her best to do what would keep her kids safest.
the duffers have tried to show us time and TIME AGAIN that karen is a caring parent who wants what’s best for her kids. she supports nancy in her ambition, she listens, she shows love and support for mike no matter what’s going on with him, and yet people toss her aside like she’s some unimportant side character. all because she’s in a loveless marriage that’s destroying HER happiness. but she still has her children who she loves and supports endlessly.
