In light of recent events, I would like to remind everyone that the correct pro choice talking point that will actually pull people to our side is NOT whether a fetus is human or not because you'll never win. The correct argument is how the state should never have the power to force you to give up physical autonomy for the sake of any other being.
if the state can't force you to be an organ donor after your death, it shouldn't be able to force you to be an organ donor before your death. if you can't be forced to give even a pint of blood for half an hour, you shouldn't be forced to give up your uterus for nine months. if your alcoholic father can't demand you give him half your liver, if the red cross can't just demand your blood, if those wig making companies can't demand your hair, no one should be able to demand your reproductive system.
even if a fertilized egg is exactly as much of a person as a twenty one year old citizen, no one else in the world should have a legal right to make use of your body parts without your express consent.
@spoofymcgee that is a great question!
I always explain that Consent to 1 thing with 1 person for 1 period of time is NOT consent to a totally different thing with a totally different person for a totally different period of time.
If I consent to have sex with my husband tonight, that is NOT consent to make out with his friend tomorrow. If I consent to donate blood to the hospital today, that doesn't imply consent to have my kidney harvested by a neighbor tomorrow. If I consent to have a professional at the tattoo parlor pierce my ears today, that doesnt mean Ive consented to having my tongue pierced by an employee at Claires tomorrow. Consent is specific to person, act, and time. Consent to sex with a romantic partner today is not consent to carry a totally different person *inside my body* for 40 weeks.
Even if consent to one act with one person coukd be transfered to another person and another act, consent can be revoked at any time, even during the act, and once that is communicated, it must be respected. You can call something off, whether it's sex or blood donation or getting your ears peirced, even if you've already begun. The same is true for carrying a pregnancy to term.
Good response, although I think it might still falter when the opposition considers pregnancy to be a reasonably expected result of sex. Consent to one thing is also consent to associated actions.
For example, consent to driving is also consent to wearing a seatbelt, obeying traffic laws, and restricting your drinking. Consent to blood donation is also consent to tests being run on that blood and that blood being given to anyone, even someone you may not have wanted to save, if given the choice.
How would you respond to this argument?
(to be clear, I am on your side and playing devil's advocate in good faith.)
I try to think about this by using a comparison that uses the most conservative thinking.
Let’s say someone drives drunk, and can reasonably expect to hurt another person. They get in a crash, and the other person is horribly injured. They need a new kidney or they’ll die. The drunk driver has caused the situation, and it could be argued that have a moral obligation to the person they hit. Donating a kidney might occasionally have some bad side effects, but most people are fine without long term issues. In this scenario, no one would ever argue that it is right for the government to force the drunk driver to donate a kidney. We can accept that in other situations, regardless of what past transgressions you’ve made, the government should never force you to use your body to keep someone else alive.
Now obviously I’m not saying that having sex is anything akin to drunk driving, or that a fetus is necessarily another person. This is just an analogy that I haven’t had a conservative be able to get around yet.

Impudent of you to assume I will meet a mortal end
This is hell’s territory and I am beholden to no gods

people seem to have trouble understanding why i’m an anti-capitalist, so i’m going to try and put it into simple, real-life terms.
i work at a restaurant. i make $12 an hour, plus tips. minimum wage where i live is relatively high for my country - the national minimum wage is $7.25/hr, and has not been raised since 2009. before taxes, working full time, my yearly income is about $22,000 a year. ($25,000 if you count tips)
at my job, we sell various dishes, with an average price of about $10-$15. we get printouts every week detailing how much money we made that week; in one week, our restaurant makes about $30,000. (one of our other locations actually makes this much on a daily basis!)
i’m not going to go into details, but after the costs of production (payroll for employees, rent for the building, maintenance, and wholesale food purchasing) are accounted for, the restaurant makes an estimated profit of $20,000 per week.
this profit goes directly to the owner, who does not work at this location. the owner of my restaurant has actually been on vacation for a few months, but still profits from the restaurant, because they own it. i have met the owner exactly twice in my year of working here.
to put this into perspective, the owner of this restaurant earns in 2 days what they pay me in one year. and that’s just from this single location - the owner has several other restaurants, all of which make more money than the one i work at. this ends up resulting in the owner having an estimated net worth of tens of millions of dollars, even after accounting for the payroll for every single worker in their employ.
now, i have to ask you: does the owner of my restaurant deserve this income? did they earn it? did their labor result in this value being created?
the naive answer would be “yes”; the owner purchased the location and arranged for the raw ingredients to be delivered, did they not?
the actual answer is “no”. the owner may have used their initial capital to start the location, but the profit is a result of my labor, and the labor of my co-workers.
the owner purchases rice at a very low bulk price of about 25 cents a pound. i cook the rice, and within a few minutes, that pound of rice is suddenly worth about $30. the owner did not create this value, i did. the owner simply provided the initial capital investment required to start the process.
what needs to be understood here is that capitalists do not create value. they use the labor of their employees to create value, and then take the excess profit and keep it.
what needs to be understood is that capitalists accrue income by already HAVING money. the owner of my restaurant was only able to get this far because they started off, from the very beginning, with enough money to purchase a building, purchase food in bulk, and hire hundreds of employees.
that is to say: the rich get richer, and they do so by exploiting the labor of the poor.
the owner of my restaurant could afford to triple the income of every single person in their employee if they felt like it, but this would mean that they were generating less profit for themselves, so they do not.
the owner of my restaurant pays me the current minimum wage of my area, because to them, i am not a person. i am an investment. i am an asset. i am a means to create more money.
when you are paid minimum wage, the message your boss is sending you is this: “legally, if i could pay you less, i would.”
every capitalist on the planet exploits their workers for their own gain. every capitalist, even the small business owners, forces people to stay in poverty so that the capitalist can profit.
This is a really good post

Only in the water of rivers and ponds could he look at his face. And the very posture he had to assume was symbolic. He had to bend over, stoop down, to commit the ignominy of beholding himself.

I Might Have Found A Discrepancy In The Shrek Universe.
So you know how in Shrek 2 during the most amazing cover of all time Mongo was born?
Yeah. Well, I was curious to see how long it would take to actually bake, cool, decorate, and make alive a Mongo in real life. Would Shrek and Gingy have enough time to save Fiona from Prince Charming and the Fairy Godmother with Mongo at their side?
Here’s how I figured it out.
So Shrek is originally seven feet tall.
But when he takes the Happily Ever After potion, he shrinks a bit. Let’s say… a foot. Shrek is now six feet tall. That’s a good, measurable number. I drew it out in proportion to Mongo here:
So from his shoulder to his mouth, Mongo is about six feet (I added a bit extra here because Shrek is bent over a little because giant gingerbread monster footsteps can be jarring and you need to brace your body for impact). Now, I couldn’t find a full body picture or character model of Mongo, but I could find one of Gingy. They do have the same proportions.
Here’s the model I used. He’s a bit bent, but I made do. Using MS Paint again, I measured about six feet on this model if it were Mongo sized.
Now using the line tool, I measured the space between the two lines and made new lines according to where the space ended. Here’s the final result:
So this is about 12 lines worth of space. The top of his head didn’t make it another six feet, so let’s say it’s three feet. Plug 12.5 and 6 into the calculator in and…
Mongo is 75 feet tall. Add that to your fan wikis.
Now let’s look at Gingy’s size. We need to know how many Gingies make a Mongo. Looking at the picture again, Gingy is a little smaller than Shrek’s head.
So if we look up the size of the average head, we get…
About nine inches. Let’s just say nine. Nine inches is 0.75 feet.
It takes 100 Gingies to make one Mongo. Assuming Gingy is the same size as an average gingerbread man that Muffin Man makes, let’s assume further and say he’s an average gingerbread man.
I found this snip from this recipe by the Food Network. Since Gingy is nine inches tall, we need to tweak this a bit.
If my calculations are correct and I’m not a fool, each batch makes four cookies. We would need 25 batches to make a Mongo. That’s 75 cups flour, 25 teaspoons baking soda, 18 ¾ teaspoons ground cinnamon and ground ginger, 12 ½ teaspoons ground allspice, ground cloves, and salt, 6 ¼ teaspoon milled black pepper (for whatever reason), 25 sticks of butter, 6 ¼ cups of room temperature vegetable shortening, 12 ½ cups packed light brown sugar, 16 2/3 cups of molasses, and 25 large eggs! Jesus, now the Muffin Man’s in crippling debt. And that’s just the cookie part!
Assuming this humble, gentle soul makes his own icing, he would need 25 pounds of confectioners’ sugar, 50 tablespoons of dried egg-white powder he would have to dry himself, and 150 tablespoons of water. I feel so sorry for this man.
Not to mention, Far Far Away can’t possibly sell gumdrops that big, so he’d have to melt them down, build a giant bowl of some sort, wait for them to solidify, take them out as to not damage them, and sprinkle sugar on them before animating his giant, expensive monster.
The melting point of gumdrops, I could not find. But I assume they have a slightly higher melting point than, say syrup sap. And it might also stick horrifically to any pan. So we need an open flame, like a bonfire, and we need it hot enough to melt the gumdrops inside of a big enough bowl. Something like pictured here from Little House In The Big Woods:
So we would need one or two of these set up. Thankfully, our boy Muffin Man lives in a place with quite a few trees.
They are a little ways off, though. Chopping one down, getting chains to propel the pot up, and starting a dangerously hot fire as well as stirring quite close to it would take for ever. And melting that many gumdrops would take forever. So would cooling them.
Now onto the actual bake time. Shrek does take place in what I presume to be Midevil Germany, judging by the architecture, clothing, and art style in the books. Though it has many modern conveniences, such as fast food and concert lighting/sound systems.
So I assume that even a somewhat seemingly poor/lower middle class single baker dude can afford a good oven. Let’s say this type of oven.
Now this is a pretty small oven. How could Muffins possibly create a 75-foot gingerbread man with this small of an oven? It’s impossible. He would have to bake him piece by piece, then somehow paste him all together. And he wouldn’t see a single penny of his back breaking work! Shrek never paid him, and Mongo ended up a soggy mess in the bottom of a river anyway, so all of that time, energy, money, work was all for nothing!
And no, I’m not acknowledging Shrek The 3rd.
Anyway suppose he did paste Mongo piece by piece. How long would it take for him to bake each piece? Let’s look at his model again.
Splitting up the model into head, upper torso, mid torso, left and right arm/hand/leg/shin/foot, and lower torso, we get something like this:
These can sit in the oven more easily. If we break it in half it would be easier.
There we go. If we make twice the amount of icing we need, then we can paste him back together, like Humpty Dumpty.
Wait…
It’s almost as if Dreamworks wanted someone to do this. Huh.
Anyway, going back to the Food Network recipe. How long does it take for a Mongo to cook? According to the article, it’s about ten minutes. So let’s just say ten minutes. Multiply that by 25, you’ve got 250 minutes in the oven, or a little over four hours to bake an entire Mongo.
It takes 5 minutes to cool a batch. so that’s 150 minutes, or a little over two hours. That’s six hours to bake and cool a Mongo.
So about saving Fiona…
It’s not happening. An oven like the one Muffins has cannot be hot enough to bake it and make it cook enough to not burn nor be raw in enough time to still get to the castle and save Fiona. Especially after mixing each batch, making the giant gumdrops, icing gluing, giving life, baking time, and cooling time. Just by estimating, mixing all that stuff together could take, like, an hour at the most. Plus the gumdrop issue; I wouldn’t be surprised if it took two and a half hours. Don’t forget giving Mongo life. I would expect another two and a half hours since an electric spark of Mary Shelly proportions can be made in a somewhat modern home with the right equipment, but Muffins probably has to make/go out to get the right equipment. (That’s how I remember Mongo being alive correct me if I’m wrong).
Add all of that up, and that’s 12 hours.
TWELVE HOURS.
That’s over 202 times of playing Shrek’s cover of “I Need A Hero.” That’s like playing Shrek 2 in full over eight times. Basically, Fiona is doomed and Shrek should have used a carriage ordering service.
TLDR; Shrek 2 is impossible and Mongo takes a lot of time and effort to make.
Why tf does this not have any notes I spent four hours of vitamin water-fueled procrastination on this and not a shred of acknowledgement. Unbelievable.

Hey! This Pride please don’t forget about Stormé DeLaverie a butch lesbian and drag king who was there at stonewall! Many witnesses said that her scuffle with the police was the defining moment that incited the riots, but regardless of whether or not she threw the first punch she’s an amazing woman and and should not be forgotten. She was also a woman of color and deserves just as much remembrance as Marsha P. Johnson and Slyvia Riveria and I so often see her left out. She passed away in 2014 at the age of 93 and was one of the earliest leaders of the gay rights movement! She was known as “the Rosa Parks of the gay community.” She also supported work for battered women and kids! Let’s all celebrate her!
