Here's some news on my music happenings: I recorded some drums last month for the upcoming @poeandctzn record (Poe is FIRE, go peep friends, don't sleep--an amazing father/husband, MC, human being doin it all and I quite enjoy his style and approach) and it has few people on there who you might know: @delhiero @j_alderete @takanocaca. I got a chance to meet them last year at the AZ #deltron3030 show and I'm honored to play with these amazing artists who are really HEROS of mine. Playing with Juan is a #bucketliststatus dream come true and, you know, Del is a pretty good rapper... right!? I hope to continue working with the @studymusicgroup/Bay Area fam for a LONG time. Maybe it's time to get out there? My goal in 2015 is to work in the studio as much as possible and record ANYTHING for ANYONE and I couldn't have kicked it off any better. You'll be seeing two more projects for other artists I'm currently recording for already and I'm in the works of putting together a new project of my own, as well. Do you need drums? Record Store Day earlier this year. Matthew was playing his Jaco Suite where back in high school he combined two different Jaco Pastorius solos (Portrait of Tracy and some other live bits from a Weather Report DVD I bought back in high school). The first time I heard him play it he said he had something special and that I was going to lose my shit. I cried... We were forever on the same page about what music we liked and at that time going through our "Weather Report Phase". It was really the first time Matthew had played solo for me and it was the beginning of his venture into solo bass playing. I got to wake up to loops of his playing. I got to come home to loops after work. I'd leave to go on gigs and there he was, looping away. Matthew had thousands of loops and maybe a hundred songs of just him playing the bass. They'd get stuck in my head and I'd whistle them for days and after three years of living together on and off, Matthews bass tone is a sound I'll never be able to forget. The way he chose his notes, his harmonies... unforgettable. His creativity was boundless. His passion for creating was like a star pouring light into the world. He never stopped. I'll never get to see this view again, I'll never get to feel his light pouring onto us from that spot on the left side of my kit and I'll never get to feel his embrace after we finish playing side by side. We often joked from our mutual love for the great John Frusciante and his battle with depression: "Put down the bottle of wine and step away from that ledge, John. Somebody loves you. We love you." Somebody loves you Matt. We love you. I love you.
