Viral Video Shows San Francisco Police Surrounding And Slaughtering Man In Broad Daylight By Firing Squad
An officer-involved shooting in San Francisco was filmed by a witness and posted on Instagram. The shooting reportedly occurred on Wednesday in San Francisco’s Bayview District around 5pm PT. The victim, now identified as 26 year old Mario Woods, was pronounced dead on the scene.
The video, filmed by a passenger on a bus next to the scene, shows a semi-circle of police officers surrounding a man backed up against the wall of a building. (Warning: The video is graphic.) With his hands at his sides, he is seen limping away from the officers until one steps into his path to prevent him from leaving and thats when a volley of shots ring out.
Officers shot Mario Woods several times after he ignored commands to drop a knife, San Francisco police Sgt. Michael Andraychak said. Andraychak said Woods continued to hold the knife after an officer shot him several times with beanbags full of lead pellets, meant to be nonlethal but that didn’t have “any effect” on the victim. However, the 15-second video clip circulating online that shows Woods bent over and holding his left hip with his left hand and wobbling on his feet says differently.
The video of the shooting, which went viral overnight, has sparked debate on social media over the excessive use of lethal force that could have been prevented. Especially with a victim that was both clearly outnumbered and clearly too injured to not have tried another way.
“There could have been other ways to subdue him,” said Chris Richard, a community activist who is organizing public meetings with police to discuss the shooting.
He’s not the only one who feels that way
“It looks like an execution,” a San Francisco resident who viewed the footage, told the San Francisco Police Commission during a discussion of body-worn cameras for police this evening. “This is why we need the cameras and the video.”
Police Chief Greg Suhr says the department is investigating. The San Francisco district attorney’s office also investigates police shootings. The department says it has suspended five officers pending the outcome of the investigation.
