Poetry Reading Christopher Nealon
Poetry Reading: Christopher Nealon with Daphne Marlatt Shazia Hafiz Ramji Wednesday, March 29th, 2017 7:00pm The Field House at Second Beach @ Stanley Park Hosted by Instant Coffee In conjunction with Jeff Derksen’s graduate poetics seminar at SFU. Christopher Nealon is a poet and a scholar who lives in Washington D.C. and works at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. His books of poetry include The Joyous Age (Black Square Editions, 2004), Plummet (Edge Books, 2009) and Heteronomy (Edge Books, 2014). As one of the most evocative readers of poetry and culture today, his critical publications include The Matter of Capital: Poetry and Crisis in The American Century (Harvard, 2011), Foundlings: Lesbian and Gay Historical Emotion before Stonewall (Duke, 2001), and numerous essays in journals such as Critical Inquiry, Mediations, and Representations. Of Nealon’s poetry, Brian Blanchfield has written: “…these longish, idiosyncratic, sharply conscious, polyhedral essay-poems that Chris Nealon has been writing for the last few years. (The first five constitute the entirety of one of the standout poetry collections of the century so far, Heteronomy, published in 2014.) …but they are also fluid, drawn forward with ‘graceful carriage,’ continuous, developing. Like his others, this poem is an instrument for thinking, about sexuality, about interiority, about difference, about solidarity. I mean, you can use it, to think.” Joining Chris are the Vancouver poets Daphne Marlatt and Shazia Hafiz Ramji. This reading takes place in conjunction with Instant Coffee’s residency in the Beach House at Second Beach in Spapayeq, (“the way the water flows around”), or Stanley Park on the unceded and traditional land of the Musqueam, Tsleil-Waututh, and Squamish people. This reading is also in recognition of the poet Jamie Reid, who, along with his life-long partner Carol Reid, organized the initial Human Be-In in the park on March 26, 1967 – almost 50 years to the day of this reading. http://www.cbc.ca/archives/entry/hippie-youth-vancouvers-human-be-in Come and be with other humans.
