Warren Zevon - The Record Plant, Sausalito, California, July 27, 1978
Last week on Aquarium Drunkard, I wrote a little something about Matthew Specktor's new book Always Crashing In The Same Car — highly recommended if you like movies, books, music, Los Angeles, heartbreak and beyond. One section of the book takes a look at the messy life and career of Warren Zevon. Not the most admirable dude in the world in a lot of cases, but the records hold up. So, here's an early-ish performance, with Warren and his kickass band revving things up in Sausalito. Great sound, great show.
Specktor says: At the beginning of his career, there was promise, the golden hope of a person whose immense talent was incontestable. At the end—and it was a long end: many years of records released by labels who knew how gifted he was, and that it might be a crime not to release music by someone as good as that, but who also knew how few units he actually shifted—there was acceptance, I think, of what it meant to be a cult artist.
