TITANIC: Lost in the Valley of the Night by ColonelTravis1836 places the Les Mis characters on the Titanic. Marius is unhappy as he has an arranged marriage made by his grandfather waiting for him. Cosette, a woman suffragette eager to spread her cause to America catches Marius eye. Eponine and her family is looking for a new life when she bumps into her old childhood friend Combeferre on the ship, her sister does everything she can to make them confess their feelings for each other. Grantaire and Bahorel has taked up jobs in the boiler room. No one is truly prepared for disaster to strike.
I like that this isn’t a crossover with Titanic the Movie, when I first read the summary I expected Marius and Cosette to have a romance like that but it’s actually different from what I thought. That was a real positive surprise, the author state that they wanted to remain as true as possible to the actual event which I approve of. The chapters are split up between the various characters, a good way to tell this story since it makes it easier to follow. There’s an author’s note in the middle of chapter 9, which I wish the author would’ve placed in the beginning instead since it moves the reader from the story back to reality and thus disturbs the flow. The author has taken liberties with the Les Mis villains personalities, which is controversial but I must admit it’s very interesting to read about the Thenardiers actually being decent folks for once! They even have a very dear and beautiful moment in chapter 9. It’s nice seeing Eponine, Azelma and Gavroche having the parents they deserve! Valjean is probably the character most true to canon in this story, and in the midst of all this new it’s comforting to have something so familiar. This is a part of a series which have 2 other parts about what happens afterwards. You can find it here: http://archiveofourown.org/works/6606820
Thank you so much for the review! I’m so mad at myself about the author note in chapter 9 i placed it there in a rush because I felt like I was on a roll.Â
