people on tiktok keep talking about how ao3 users are breaking ao3's "rules" by marking abandoned fics as complete, or that brainstorming a fic and deciding not to finish it and just posting what you're up to is also a "placeholder" fic.
so just so everyone knows ao3 has a very clear and comprehensive content policy about what is a "non-fan work" and thus is not allowed on the archive. and ao3 makes absolutely no statements on when a fic should or should not be marked as complete including if the author has abandoned it (and they probably never will).
and ao3 makes absolutely no requirement on what tags should ever be on a fic other than rating, archive warning, and fandom. tagging as "Not rated" "creator chose not to use archive warnings" and a single fandom is considered enough.
do not confuse ao3 etiquette with ao3 content policy.
and on top of that, do not assume that there is a unanimous ao3 etiquette at all. if you are uncomfortable reading any tags at all, then a fic tagged "not rated" and "creator chose not to use archive warnings" is not a fic that you should read. this is what "don't like don't read" actually means.
"but how am i supposed to know i don't like it if the author hasn't tagged it properly?" doesn't matter. you have clicked on a fic that clearly indicates that it is choosing not to use archive warnings or other tags. they have tagged it properly. you have made an error in your own judgement. this does not warrant abuse of an author in their comments, or reporting them to ao3 for "violating ao3 policies".
stop fear mongering about what counts as "violating ao3 terms of service" and convincing people they're going to get reported for something as inane as writing a fucking drabble.
