Ink Scribbler's Scribble Workshop
Yesterday, February 21, 2014, I attended my first calligraphy workshop. Yay!
I have been obsessing over calligraphy, brush art, typography, lettering, and chalk art for over six months now. I have discovered blogs and web pages of such talented calligraphers, letterers, and artists. I spend my days lusting over their work on the Internet. Oh, happy days.
I wanted to learn calligraphy not just because it really piqued my interest, but also so I could design for people someday. You see, I'm not exactly a talented person. I used to write when I was still a student but I think my writing skills have gotten pretty rusty. So anyway, I thought about trying out calligraphy, since I've always enjoyed writing hand-written notes and letters.
I attended the Scribble Workshop of Alexis Ventura. She is the genius behind Ink Scribbler.
The workshop was held at Le Creperie, New Manila. It was a nice and cozy place.
Each participant had a folder with worksheets, a Hunt 56 nib, a wooden nib holder, a bottle of ink, and a pencil.
Here's Alexis giving us an introduction.
I won't post all worksheets so as not to spoil those who are interested in attending her workshop :) But basically, Alexis taught us how to insert and use a flexible nib pen prior to starting with our worksheets. She gave us a lot of tracing exercises to help us have a feel for it.
Here is my messy worksheet. We practiced writing lower and upper case alphabets.
We were also served yummy snacks. Yay!
We also traced some cards with quotations/phrases on them.
We also got to try writing with colored inks and making it into a gradient/ombre effect. Too bad I forgot to take a photo of the sample that Alexis wrote. But here's the one that I tried using yellow ink. Obviously, I need a lot more practice since I wasn't able to achieve the gradient effect.
Three hours well spent! I had so much fun in this workshop. Look, I even got a certificate for all my hard, ehem, messy/wobbly work! :)
Alexis also displayed some her nibs, inks, and paper.
And here are some of her work. Sigh. So pretty.
After class, I had the chance to ask Alexis about nibs, inks, and paper. I think I'm going to hoard supplies soon! :)
And of course, I did not leave without a photo op.
Overall, it was a good experience. I liked the venue too. I also enjoyed the good music playing in the background while we were doing our worksheets. I loved all the songs!
