âI asked if you were okay. Youâve been zoned out for like two minutes.â
âOh, right. Yeah. Iâm okay -- sorry. Itâs been a weird few nights.â
âI said, âDid you finish your homework?â. Iâve only been repeating it for, yâknow, 3 minutes.â
âWhat -- yeah, of course I finished it. Jesus, you act like I slack off.â
âWhat?â
Peter kept his eyes shut against Coraâs little outburst. If he stopped focusing so much on everything around him, he could almost fall asleep. The soft pitter patters of the rain tapping their beat against the windows of the loft was becoming oddly comforting, like a lullaby. He could breathe in the scent of familiarity and peace and for once fall asleep and hope he wouldnât be plagued by more night terrors. Yet he felt the couch give under new weight and noted that Cora had sat down also. âI almost died if that makes you feel any better?â Peter shot back, though his tone was far from scathing.Â
Sitting with her legs hugged to her chest comforted Cora in a way. Being sat in such close proximity to her uncle while her mind continued racing made background noise seem ever so loud in comparison. The closeness wouldnât seem so bad if her mind could refrain from lingering on all the horrid things heâd done since she left America. Inhaling and exhaling in a rhythmic pattern soothed her nerves, the rain hitting the window playing as the only sound between the two aside from her tethered breathing. âIt doesnât,â Cora mumbled under her breath, almost a whisper. âYou dying doesnât make anything better, uncle Peter.â The part of her that wanted to act on thoughts about their broken family burned brightly, but she buried the flame and carried on siting in the uncomfortable silence.
Dakota looked the girl over, making sure she really was okay. Usually, she was able to use her werewolf senses to do it but for some reason, they were all out of whack. âYouâŠâ She shook her head. âYou definitely donât seem okay. Are you sure? Because-â And then, her mom was back, this time in a royal purple bathing suit. It took Dakota a second to gain her breath back while she stared at her mom then looked at Cora. When she looked towards the pool again, her mother was gone. Again. âYouâre telling me?â The brunette laughed shakily. âThis is definitely the oddest party Iâve ever been to. And one of the first, actually.â
âI just thought--â It was almost as if in the blink of an eye there they were again. Derek and Peter, young and still close as ever. Still not able to pick up any bit of their conversation. They seemed so happy, far from how she knew them now. But how was it possible for her to be seeing them -- so young, so real? Shaking her head, positive she was seeing things, she frowned when they were still standing there. â..I saw someone I used to know.â Cora finally continued, as if the two boys standing just feet from her were nothing but a distant memory. Flashing back to being eleven and the love she used to know, she fell silent again. When they disappeared from her visage, she finally plucked up the heart to respond. âYou too? Iâve never been to one either. As far as first parties go..this isnât shaping up to how I had originally pictured it.â
âI saw...things. Things that even now I donât think I could explain.â
âGuy like me? Ohâuh I donât really know. I just turn up to the room the timetable tells me.â
âYeah, cute. Well, even if we donât? At least Iâm another friendly face at school. Which most people would agree to disagree on, but, whatever.â

âWe both know that isnât going to happen -- so you might as well give up now, Der.â
Dakota cleared her throat when she noticed the other girl tense up, wondering if she had bumped into the wrong person. It was obvious that she was a werewolf too. She played with her fingers, prepared to defend herself if need be, but let her arms drop when the other girl relaxed. âCora- I shouldâve watched where I was going. I was in a rush and-â She looked around again, trying to see if her mother came back outside. âIâm okay. Iâm okay. Are you? Did I hurt you?â
Cora could easily tell how flustered the girl was, and she could literally smell her anxiety from a mile away. âItâs fine -- calm down. There are a lot of people, itâs super crowded. Donât beat yourself up over it.â Drawing in a deep breath, she wiped her sweaty palms on the front of her jeans and cleared her throat. Suddenly dizzy, she stumbled backwards and reached out to grip at one of the pillars holding up the porch roof. Figuring it was just a loss of balance, she shook her head and curiously glanced around the party while catching her breath. Even for a brief second she caught a glimpse of two people she knew very well -- a young Peter and Derek chatting by the pool. Exactly how she remembered them. Derek playfully shoved Peterâs shoulder after some remark she wasnât able to listen in on, and Cora went to step forward to walk over. But she blinked and they were gone. âWha--â Forcing herself to snap out of it, she thought back on the question the girl asked her and nodded again. âYeah, Iâm fine...This party is weird.â
Lydia turned her head slightly and smirked proudly at the praise she was receiving about her parties before she shrugged a shoulder. âI throw the best parties.â She bragged, before she bit her lip in thought. âIâm going to throw a party.â She decided. âWe deserve a night of nothing but fun, and whatâs more fun than a party?â She questioned, before pursing her lips curiously. âDo you have an outfit?â
Cora froze, rubbing her temples. âDo I have a party outfit? Lydia -- I have skinny jeans and like...denim. Iâm not exactly equipped to look âhotâ for these things.â Looking over at the much more fashion-forward, girly-girl, she sighed. âYouâre very much better at these things than me. In all senses of the word. This is your area of expertise.â
Dakota was staring straight ahead, completely focused on her mother sitting at the pool and laughing with friends, waving her over. It took her less than a second to start over to the woman and she was barely phased when she started to push through people. That was until she got into a head on collision with another girl who seemed about her age. âOh fuck- Iâm really sorry. I was just-â She looked towards her mother and saw that she was gone, sighing and figuring she had gone inside for another drink. âIâm sorry. Iâm Dakota.â
Cora blinked, glancing around the already crowded party. Cora was neither a fan of enclosed spaces or crowded places. The fact that sheâd even been convinced to come to this party was practically a miracle, let alone the fact that she was âminglingâ with people. After growing bored of standing and idly chatting with some pathetic drunk guy by the refreshment table, Cora decided to step away for fresh air. Slipping through the already wide-open french doors, she started walking towards the pool. Feeling another figure collide straight into her, Cora tensed up and her jaw clenched. But when seeing how confused the girl was, she calmed down. âNo worries, itâs okay. Iâm Cora -- are you okay?â
âYou really think? Itâs uhânice to meet you too, Cora.â
âTotally. Guy like you will do fine in school.â She shrugged, nodding in his direction. âYeah! What grade are you in? We might have some classes together.â
but did you see the flares in the sky? were you blinded by the light? did you feel the smoke in your eyes? did you? did you? did you see the sparks filled with hope? you are not alone cause someoneâs out there, sending out flares
