it’s just a one night trip
Be it with a cow or a person… Be it in a village or a city, if you are sincere, you can communicate with others. I’ve never failed using this method.
Atsushi Nakajima & Miyazawa Kenji on a mission together || Ep. 11
Until two months ago, I was living in a village called Ihatov, where there is neither electricity nor telephones. I was recruited by the president and came to the city. This city’s full of new concepts. I’m having a lot of fun!

❛ Mmmmm? ❜
Head lolls back against the back of his chair, staring the younger blonde down from where he stands. He looks upside down in his gaze, but it doesn’t take much effort to see what he’s so focused on – A phone. Ah, had he not been given his company phone just yet…? No, perhaps he had, and he just didn’t know what to do with it yet.
❛ Shouldn’t you learn how to make a call on your cellphone before the ones we keep here, Kenji-kun? Here, I’ll show you – come over here. ❜
“Ehh? I turned my cellphone on once, but after a few days I looked at it and the lights wouldn’t turn on. Ever since, I’ve just left it in my room given it’s broken and I never really used it.” ———What point was there in replacing something he didn’t need?
Briefly pondering if a cellphone was really all that different from the office phones, he eventually shrugs (not seeing the point). Regardless, he hastens himself to the seated detective’s side, bending slightly at the waist with his characteristic smile once again intact.
“Nonetheless, thank you, Ranpo-san! You’re always really dependable.”

Gemiya eyed the younger boy, watching as he leaned over to peek into the garage with a heavy sacks in his arms as if it were nothing. He’s… that strength wasn’t entirely human. One of her friends were strong, but even he found some difficulty in carrying items like that for long periods of time. And to this boy…? Hm.
“Possibly. You own an automobile?” He’s too young though? Or maybe one of his own friends did.
“Kenji then. It’s a pleasure to meet you. Astraeus Gemiya and since I have the pleasure of addressing you by your first name. Call me Gemiya as well.” Impose? Goodness this boy was far too polite for his own good. “That may be true, but nor do I like to be rude to a guest and buy food he or she may not like.”
“Nope!” He explains, lightly rubbing at the back of his head. He wouldn’t even know where to start with a car, coming from a village where even a tractor was considered fancy technology. Before he continues, however, he pulls a black bi-fold wallet from the pocket of his coveralls, opening it to reveal an ID card reading ARMED DETECTIVE AGENCY at the top, followed by other official looking documentation.
“I’m a detective that helps the police when they get stuck. A lot of the time, I’m asking around repair shops after vehicles involved in crimes.” The child elucidates with a carefree smile, unsuspecting and unwary of revealing such details to a person he’s just met. Depositing his badge, however, he keeps his breezy pace. “If you insist... How about a beef bowl? Most stalls have plenty of options, so you can get whatever you’d like as well!”

’ ’ keeping an eye on ’… that makes me sound a bit like a criminal, don’t you think ~ ? ‘
BEMUSED ANGUISH lights his features, as dazai paces circles around the scene of the crime. yellow tape CRISS CROSSES debris && decimated storefront, emergency trucks whirling red && blue in the distance. there is shattered glass paneling, unmistakable signs of shots fired not too long ago. the other inspectors are eying them with an air of CAUTION, but the most satisfying thing about being assigned to a mission with this boy is how LITTLE he seems to care about any wary glances.
’ what do you make of this, kenji-kun ? '
“Does it? I think it makes you sound like a cat that won’t sit still.”
Abstract, optimistic perspective rings cheerfully in his tone as he idles nearby, folding his arms neatly behind his back. The few steps he does take are nonchalant, mindful of the broken glass underfoot but never once looking at the ground as he navigates the scene——and to give a friendly wave to the few officers he immediately recognized from past cases. Upon being called, however, he immediately backtracks, positioning himself seriously at his senior detective’s side. Readying a contemplative expression, his chin rests lightly atop his fist, and honey colored hues scan over the scene once more.
“... They said the victim was the store owner who was attending the register at the time, but there wasn’t any cash taken, so it doesn’t appear to be a robbery.” The younger hums, lifting a finger skyward, “It looks really messy, though, especially if only one person was the target.”

Be without desire. Never be angered. Always have a quiet smile.

Not too much farther now and it took only about ten minutes more to get to where they needed to go. The person she mentioned the delivery was for earlier had given her instructions on where to leave everything and so it was easy enough to set most of the stuff down there. “Here. She had told me to leave it here during the call since she’s busy with a tune-up at the moment.” And as if on cue, she looks into the garage to see the mechanic busy at work for sure.
“I would introduce you, but once she’s got herself busy with a job, it’s hard to pull her out of it.” Thus the two could now start walking back to the city. “What’s your name by the way? And what are you in the mood to eat?”
The sound of soldering and whirs of equipment going on inside the garage reach his ears in little time at all; he leans over, onto one leg and barely peers inside, far more interested in the vehicles atop the lifts and the tools along the walls to notice that a person was actually working on one. But at her instruction, he shifts his weight back and walks a few paces away, only to set the sack down just next to the one she’d had moments prior.
“Oh, that’s okay! I can always come back and meet her later. I might even meet her on a job.” Not that such circumstances would be ideal, but it was true. He’d often end up at auto shops one way or another, asking about a vehicle that was sold or missing or possibly blown to bits.
“I’m Miyazawa Kenji,” He begins, quickly hopping across one long stride in order to catch up. “Please call me Kenji, though! The world is like a big village, so I don’t really see a point to formalities. —But please, don’t let me impose if you’re the one who’s paying. If it’s your treat, shouldn’t it be something you like?”

Walking on ceilings is a nice party trick, and gravity manipulation certainly does come in handy during fights, but for Chuuya, the real perk of his ability is this: the faculty to keep his hat fixed perfectly on his head at any given time. There’s power in being able to do that, and not ironic, either— it’s like a toast and a fuck you to the riffraff he deals with on a day-to-day basis, letting him demolish them in battle even as his hat remains impeccably installed atop his equally impeccable haircut. It’s the equivalent of knocking them into the middle of next week while simultaneously rubbing in their faces that while they’ve been busy being destroyed, he still looks like he’s barely broken a sweat— which, granted, he usually hasn’t. The pros are infinite: the immortalization of his hat as a staple of his appearance, the reinforcement of his dashing sense of style, the fact that it requires only the slightest of thoughts on his part.
The con, incidentally, is also that it requires only the slightest of thoughts on his part, because it’s easy for him to forget that he has to actively think to exercise his ability on his hat.
Which is why, ambling along one fine morning and harmlessly minding his own business, it’s all Chuuya can do to blink when a gust of wind comes along and ever so rudely blows his hat off his head.
His mouth catches up before the rest of him does. “Fuck—!”
He’s getting ready to sacrifice his dignity and chase after it in broad daylight because god fucking damn that is his favorite hat, when someone else captures it for him. A boy — a kid, really — with blond hair and large, friendly eyes, dressed in a pair of cuffed blue overalls. Around his neck hangs his own hat, an old straw thing that’s probably seen better days. It rings a bell, and Chuuya pauses, fishing after the memory that it sparks, only to realize that of all the people to encounter on the streets, he’s bumped into one of the members of the Armed Detective Company. Of course. Not even noon, and his luck today is already shaping up to be shitty.
“Onii-san?” he repeats in bemusement at the kid’s choice of address. Then, in horror at the recommendation that follows, “Strings?”
Chuuya needs a moment to process this. The kid is even nicer than he looks, and it’s fucking weird, but being called onii-san is the least of his problems right now.
“Where do you think we are, a farm?” he says, and, upon eyeing the kid’s outfit, amends, “Wait, don’t answer that. Thanks for catching my hat, though— I’ll be sure to try your suggestion if I ever want to ruin it.”
Kenji has never been the sort to judge or hold a grudge. All humans could come together if they responded genuinely and honestly with one another, even if they had been guilty of crimes in the past, even if they did wrong by others in the present. So, although he remembers who is in front of him (there’s been enough dealings with the Mafia that he can’t really forget faces anymore), not even the slightest irritation reads upon his face.
In fact——the questions uttered are about the norm, even for people not associated with the Agency or the Mafia. If anything, he’s oblivious to the oddity of his nature, his seemingly unnatural radiance and optimism being considered just the norm for him and him alone; ‘tis simply the way he wonted to be, and there was little chance of it ever changing.
“Ruin it?” The farm boy eventually repeats, albeit tilting his head backwards as if attempting to steal a glance at his own (he didn’t think his hat looked that bad just because it had strings he tied ‘round his neck.). The worn, woven straw bends as he does, however, and the tension against the back of his scalp forces him to stop. Rebounding, he lands firmly atop his sandals and innocently restates his intentions: “I was just thinkin’ it might stop it from getting blown away, onii-san.”
Never mind the familiar form of address——he lays a wrist atop the other behind his back, allowing his crown to tilt just so. “Losing such a nice hat would be a shame, after all, and the city sure has a lot of gusts pick up with all the cars around.”
