Irene makes this promise on a Monday. She promises that after five o'clock on Thursday, she’s all Kai’s. No distractions, a night off for just them. She did this on the agreement that he arranged everything, and he had agreed.
She shrugged her coat off and called out his name as she returned home. She could hear sounds from the kitchen as she sat down to undo her shoes. There was a thunk and she looked up from her knotted laces, unpleasantly damp after the days rain. “Kai? What was that?”
“Me knocking the newspaper off the table.” He called back. “How do you feel?”
“I am absolutely starving. Are you cooking?”
“I am.” Kai was excellent in the kitchen and she could smell whatever it was that he was cooking when she crossed into the kitchen. Irene smiled as she stepped up behind him, set her hands on his hips and kissed just behind his ear. “Busy day?”
“Silver was doing my head in, I thought that I was going to scream at him at one point. Maybe I should have done, he may learn his lesson.” Kai chuckled and she could feel his body moving. “Do you need me to do anything?” Kai could feel goosebumps on his skin as her breath brushed the side of his neck.
“No, the dining table is already set and the food is nearly cooked. All I need right now, is you.” She smiled and stepped back. The dining room was small and attached to the kitchen and sitting room, neither of those rooms were usually used, they preferred the atmosphere of their study, or the cosy kitchen. Irene looked at their table for a long moment, before she got out the candles in the side table and started setting those out before she searched for matches to light them all.
There was already a bottle of white wine on the side and she opened that and half filled the glasses. Kai came in behind her with two plates of rice and fish that he’d cooked in honey, ginger and soy sauce.
“That smells amazing.” She said as he put a plate by her usual seat. “Thank you for cooking tonight.” She knew that Kai would probably have preferred some fancy restaurant, expensive food and wine, but this was more of Irene’s idea of a good date night, just the two of them and some good, home cooked food.
“Anything to make you smile.” Irene laughed.
“You can be so… Cheesy at times.” She said. He gave her a grin.
“It makes you laugh and smile so I’ll keep being cheesy.” He replied. “Sit down and eat, before it goes cold. I doubt it’s any good when it’s cold.” Irene sat down and picked up her glass.
“Here’s to a good evening.” She said. He picked up his own glass and gestured to her with it.
