sorry I haven’t been here y’all... writing muse just evaporated and I still haven’t gotten it back. Still want to keep all the threads and stuff though. Much love.
fromzerostoheros:
“Well, my daughter’s on the team…..I was an assassin. I was a badass back in the day, granted….my childhood wasn’t the best thing ever. Both parents were supervillains, and my only options were join the family business or….starve. So I did…..and…it was fine for awhile…..and then fuckin’ Roy Harper.” Says Jade, her voice low and yet there’s almost a wistfullness to her voice as her mind drifts to the father of her daughter. “It was a game. He saved the day, thwarted my plans, and I just kept coming back for more. There was something so…fascinating about him…..and then….I got pregnant and he left…back to her.”
She looks down at her drink, as visions blur in and out. Telling Roy, the look on his face was not one of joy, crying as he returned…..to her. Thea Queen. Then seeing her baby girl on that monitor when holding the sonogram of the baby inside of her.
“I wanted Lian though to have something different….I wanted her to be better…..to have the world. I didn’t want her to be like me…so I left the League of Assassins, left that life entirely. Sometimes…it was tough but…I look at that little girl, and she reminds me why I do what I do. Why it was worth it to leave. I see her…and I want her to make a difference….to live a better life than I did.” She explains softly. “When she decided to join the team, I figured I’d help train them….to help them all make this world a little bit less shitty.”
“Hm, well my story isn’t…quite like that.” Said Carol softly, as she looks down at the Star Sapphire ring. “Hal and I were married…before. Then he became Green Lantern and, it was tough….getting kidnapped all the time. And maybe over time I started getting….a little bitter. I mean I’m not Lois, I’m not a saint who puts up with her husband’s daring do and the thousands of excuses. So….alright I might have gone a little….crazy when I got the Star Sapphire ring…..but well eventually things went back to normal.”
She won’t divulge her whole life story like Jade did, besides that’s not what Astra asked.
“Anyway, I decided to help because I figured they should know what their up against. When I was….evil, I did many things that….I’m still shocked Lois and Hal forgave me for. They need to know, villains don’t pull punches, they won’t hold back, and that it’s not all fun and games. That this life is hard and it will take it’s toll on you if you’re not prepared for it.” Says Carol, clearly the years have dulled her idealism. “So what about you Astra? Why are you helping?”
.
She notes the answers again. They were both answers that she related to in pieces. The world has always been cruel, but wanting to make it a better place for those who come next was also important to remember. Her own question gets turned back on her and Astra nods, taking a sip of her coffee. There were so many years of history that her answer covered, but she also didn’t want to fully divulge her own history. She was rusty at being part of an actual team, but then she just decided to be honest. There was no greater test to seeing the kind of people who you were working with then how they reacted to your own truths.
“I feel as though you’ve both given parts of my answer already. Though I think it may be slightly different since I didn’t originate here.” Astra folds her hands together, looking at both of the others, but starting with Carol. “I am intimately familiar with how cruel the world can be. There is no way to deny it.” Then she looks to Jade. “But I also agree that we should work to make the future a brighter place. Even beyond that, though it may be hopelessly idealistic of me, I want to instill a mindset in those that come next that keeping the world safe isn’t about maintaining what it is, but always challenging the hows and the whys that go into what they see day to day. I’m helping so that perhaps they can do what I couldn’t do, so that they can work to make the beauty of this planet, this universe even, one where it isn’t just about survival. Very lofty, but I wouldn’t be who I am without setting high expectations.”
girlofsteel:
Despite of hearing the reassurances from Alex and Hank, Kara has been practically glued to her aunt’s side for hours. Kept a close eye, azure orbs flickering back between the heart rate monitor and Astra to make sure that she was still there. Exhaustion obvious on the blonde’s face, yet she fights to remain awake to guard. Kara, situated in a seat just next to Astra’s bed, had her arms folded on its edge to support her sleepy frame from collapsing.
Of what felt like minutes turned out to be hours when Kara had woken up in a start to the sound of Astra’s heart beat rising. Agents had scurried along the room to check, surrounding the room and checked her vital signs.
The Super still remained, as what she all wanted was her aunt to see her first when she wakes. “Astra? Hey–hey, it’s me. It’s Kara.” Shakily, she reaches for the Astra’s hand. Her heart swells knowing that her dearest aunt is strong and made it. “Rao, you have no idea how happy I am right now. I really thought I was going to lose you, but–you’re so strong, Astra. You and I, we could do things together for this city. I wouldn’t mind having a Super aunt too.” She chuckles, pressing a gentle kiss over her knuckles.
Her vision is blurry, swimming with fuzz and the shine of the bright lights. There is a low groan as she tries to force her body to move, to act. Everything feels sluggish, wrong. This wasn’t the first time that Astra’s woken up like this. Somehow, once again, she’s cheated death. One of these days, her luck is going to run out.
Dully, she can sense that there is someone touching her hand. Astra turns her head, vision coming slightly more in view. Weakly she tries to close her hand to hold Kara’s. She almost manages. Not for lack of trying or wanting to, but it’s just physically too much. Almost dying can certainly do that, even if you have super powers.
Astra swallows, mouth dry, but still tries to speak. So tired that she forgets to translate to English, instead staying in her and Kara’s native tongue. “Kara? Wha-What happened? Where am I?” This is followed by a few coughs.
I know why I can do the things I can do, Mom. I know why I was sent to Earth. To be its champion.
fromzerostoheros:
It’s not often she gets invited out on girls’ nights with other ‘superheros’ most of her friends are moms who are on the PTA. So, this is actually pretty exciting, because as much as she does like her friends. She’d like to talk about something other than the big bake sale….Stacey. Nevertheless, Jade walks in and she spots Carol who glances from over her sunglasses. The two of them eyeing each other before making their way to Astra’s table.
“Oh it’s nothing really, I kind of miss talking this kind of business actually.” Says Jade as she takes a seat. “You wouldn’t believe how boring PTA moms get after awhile.”
“No trouble really,” Says Carol, she’s not the type to trust so easily anymore. While Jade may have left the life behind to settle with a daughter, Carol didn’t have that option. “So where do we begin?”
.
She looks at both of the women and nods. Two very different, but affirmative responses. There is a desire in her to take charge and order everything about, but she quells it. As much as she wants to make moves towards making sure that Jordan and the other youths were given good advice, it would require more than just good planning. They had to get to know each other, understand each other’s methods and points of view. She folds her hands together. No time to get started with that then the present.
“I’ll be honest, for the most part what I’m hoping to get from this is a better understanding of the two of you. We are, after all, working together and I’d like to make sure we all get along and can come to each other if we are concerned about one of the kids on the team. Maybe we can start by saying why we decided to help?”
@fromzerostoheros
It was a nice day. Which was helpful. At least mostly helpful. Astra’s nerves were running a bit high. Her fellow “mentors” of the younger generation were meeting with her today. They’d picked this coffee shop mostly for the fact that it was off the beaten path so that there would be enough privacy to discuss whatever they’d like. She had, of course, gotten here early. Early enough to scope it out and make sure that it was indeed as safe as the others had said. It seemed to be, but she was still not totally sure about what was going to occur. Astra isn’t the most people-y of persons. She did think it was important for them to create a cohesive curriculum and get along as mentors, but wanting it wasn’t exactly the same as it happening. Either way, she plastered a sort of smile when the other two women finally joined her in the booth. “Glad to see you both. Thank you for making the time to come.”

ah little kraken, bold are you. restless sailor, dauntless fighter, lower your sword, let me see your shield. ah, of course, they are but the same object. oh wave-tossed ruffian, lend me some of your mettle would you? you have been struck by the sharpest of spears yet you still stand here proudly. but off your guard, elsewhere of the battlefield, you will find your spirit can parch others. your words are but weapons crafted from your soul. little lion, sheathe your claws, or the ones you love the most will suffer. you do not have to be strong all the time love, there's nothing wrong with being soft. vulnerability is not weakness, and if it were, what's wrong with that? strength is not always your greatest tool, your heart is good. put down excalibur, and use your words. you'll find they will carry you much farther. not everything in life is a battle.

nodamnstogive:
Jessica nodded empathetically as she listened to Astra’s story. She had encountered this kind of case many times before in her practice. Someone supposedly dies and is buried one day and then they seemingly rise from the grave. Her own story was a prime example of such a case, albeit one where the person in question had lain in a coma for six months and only then been raised from the dead.
As Jessica put the facts together and wrote them down on her legal pad, a question started forming in her mind. “That’s all very good and all,” she said with a smile. “But how do you know that she’s alive? And that it isn’t some person that looks a lot like her?” She paused. “It’s normal in some families for twins to occur across multiple generations. Does Kara have a twin sister?”
.
“Well, I know that there isn’t a secret twin. I was very involved when she was young and as much as her mother and I may have had some disagreements, Alura wouldn’t have hidden something like that from me.” She was very confident in that. Astra cleared her throat and she tried to find a way to say the next bit without scaring off the woman that she was hoping to hire.
There is a pause as she thinks. “As for how I know... part of the reason I’m coming to you is because of my own past. I may be a buisness woman now, but I made a lot of enemies to get to where I am today. I have a lot of connections and I heard whispers. I don’t want to name names and potentially risk the ire of people who might be looking. I came to you because I believe that you are up to a task of this nature. If it becomes that you need to know in order to actually get me the answers I need, then we can talk.”
itrytobeagoodkid:
“Well, the essay is supposed to be about how your culture impacts your daily life. Um, my girlfriend Sarah for example, she’s Mexican so she’s writing her paper on her experiences in being the granddaughter of immigrants. So, I guess….what was our culture like? Did we have holidays? Do we have holidays? What food did we eat? Are we the only species who draws power from another sun? Just….who were we?” He asked softly, and because its Astra he also divulges the truth.
“Honestly? I’m….also a little jealous of my friends…I mean. Alien or not, they all have something they can point to and go….that’s part of my culture, my identity, my heritage. Jon and I don’t have that. We can’t point at a certain food and go ‘yeah, it’s from Krypton like I am.’ or say ‘Yeah that’s a Kryptonian tradition, we celebrate.’ Y’know? I mean….even with my nonhuman friends. There’s other Tamaranians, other Atlantians, other Amazons……not a lot of Kryptonians.”
.
He has so many questions. Not for the first time, Astra is stuck by just how much has been lost. Her eyes tear up slightly, but she takes a breath and steadies herself. Kara, though she had all her memories, was still very young when she’d landed on Earth. Much of the rituals were likely faded memories to her. She nods, both to acknowledge what he’s saying and to give herself time to think, to sort out how to do this. It had been something in the back of her mind for ages, but now that it was here? It didn’t feel real. “I...It’s...” She catchers her words and then in a rare action when they speak their minds to each other, Astra gets up. She leaves the room.
Even with superspeed, she’s gone for at least a solid minute before she returns. In her hands is a small handbound book and a few pieces of cloth. She places the book in her chair and hands the two small pieces of cloth to Jordan. “There aren’t that many of us left. I know you have so many questions. We’ll get to those, but this first. Sorry I haven’t finished these yet.” The two pieces of cloth are about dishtowel sized, both the familiar dark blue of both Kara and Clark’s suits, but decorated with constellations around a central circle. It’s there that the unfinished part is obvious. There is a very clear embroidered symbol of El, but there is more stitching around the outside of it. “I was making these for you and Jon. It’s an older tradition. The stars around the outside are the ones that would have been overhead on Krypton the night that you both were born. Clearly there is the sign of your house, but I haven’t finished translating your names into the right symbols yet. So you both can have something tangible that’s yours that connects you to where your family came from.”
itrytobeagoodkid:
“Hey Aunt Astra!” He greets her with a smile and hug, he loves visiting her. She’s quickly become one of his favorite aunts, and he loves spending time with her whenever he can. He sets his backpack down and leans against the countertop. “Yeah! Actually um, so for school we have this assignment where we’re talking about our cultural heritage and stuff. Which…got me thinking. I know we kind of talked a little bit about it before, but can I ask you? Like about Krypton and stuff? I can’t write about it but…I do want to know more.”
.
She returned the hug tightly and then glanced down at his sneakers. “Shoes,” she reminds him, pointing at the mat. After he’d comlied and told her what he was looking for, she raised an eyebrow. Krypton was a touchy subject for most of the people who’d lived through losing it, but beyond that she was never sure how much was too much. She wanted to give Clark and his sons an easy way to stay connected with their heritage, though not in a way that was overbearing. “You know I’m always happy to try and answer any questions you might have. Certainly you should look into any of the holograms that Kara and Clark may have as well. It could be fun to still treat this like you are doing the assignment, as it helps to have a narrower topic. Is it based on cultural events or traditions that are important? Or just the general ways of life?”
@itrytobeagoodkid
It isn’t rare for Jordan to visit. Astra makes sure to keep her balcony window unlocked for the most part and when the familiar sound of him super-jumping near hits her ears, she smiles. It isn’t difficult to fix him a small plate of snacks and a drink (ones she she knows he likes) before he arrives.
When he makes his way in, she turns with a smile. “Jordan! I wasn’t expecting you today, but I’m glad to see you. I hope things are going well.”
a small psa that, if you’re writing with me, there’s never any pressure. you can always take as much time responding to things as you need. days, weeks, months, it’s fine with me! you and your well-being come first. i never want you to feel like i’m expecting you to write, because that’s never the case. and i never want you to feel rushed for replies. you, the mun, always come first, full stop. <3
