rainbow veins [xion and roxas]
Find Xion. That had been his first course of action as soon as he’d had strength enough to stand. If Roxas had made it back, she had to have done the same. And Axel had agreed, good-naturedly.
“Just like old times, huh? But could we make make this the last time we gotta play search party?”
It took approximately 18 days to find her. Roxas and Axel scoured world by world; Castle Oblivion had crumbled soon after that Ventus kid had woken up, so that spared them from having to look there. Roxas himself had supposedly been found in Radiant Garden, but they hadn’t found her there either. The World That Never Was gave them no help; her unconscious body would have probably been devoured by Heartless which was something he didn’t want to think about. Roxas leaves Samurai scouts in each world he crosses off his list, to look in his stead just in case she decided to turn up.
Only a million more places to search. But Roxas didn’t think of it that way—he focused on counting each day she was missing, and the fact that his mind didn’t again drift off into frightening territory–”Is any of this for real?”–made it easier to keep charging ahead. Sometimes he and Axel split up to cover more ground, but he suspected Axel stuck with him to make sure he allowed himself rest.
They receive a message from Headquarters in Radiant Garden while turning stones over in some world called New York. A break from the noise was good, but Roxas was reluctant to leave until Yuffie informed him that Xion’s body had been recovered.
“She just sort of showed up one day, like she’d been there her whole life. Everything left her alone.” Ventus explained this with animated hand gestures, obviously pleased that he’d been able to help. Roxas pushes past him, a boulder of anxiety dropping into the pit of his stomach when he saw her asleep.
“She’s fine, don’t worry—though seeing me seemed to make her feel safe enough to rest again. I feel like she thought I was you.” Roxas thought he could hear a guarded resentment in Ventus’ tone, as if his counterpart still wasn’t sure how he felt about that. But he couldn’t focus on the other’s feelings, not when she was here. Not when she was safe. It’s almost impossible to believe.
He kneels at her bedside, forces everyone but Axel out.
“I’m staying here until she wakes up. No one needs me for anything.” it was a statement that no one argued against, not even the three fairies who’d been badgering him to train. Roxas sits next to the bed, back against it with his knees to his chest. He wants to shake her awake, but is pinned by the terrifying notion that she was just an illusion, that any attempts to touch her would cause her to disappear again. Axel eventually snores in his own corner in a rocking chair, worry lines he didn’t outwardly express fading with sleep.
His thoughts wanders into territories he’d been avoiding up until now.
They were here. He was here. How was that possible? His mind whirs with paranoia, like ice slowly edging around his heart. When he looked at his hands, he would momentarily envision them fading in and out of focus. His skin would darken into something more like Sora’s, before he blinked them pale again. The moment he clenched his fist, his world would crash and he discovered he’d only dozed off without realizing it. He’d been…doing that a lot since he’d woken up. Axel had picked fun at him for it, but he imagined that was just to try and play down the situation. When it could no longer be ignored even his friend had taken the episodes seriously, but Roxas had told him to keep it to himself.
It was becoming torture. The closer he got to finally accepting that he really was here, the deeper his fears dug into him. He was constantly being tugged back and forth by a need to be happy and a cold reminder of what had happened when he’d been happy before.
‘When you become too focused on yourself, start thinking about someone else. It’s a good practice.’
Aerith had told him that, and now he took it to heart. Roxas wondered if Xion had or would feel this way. Maybe they could help eachother when she woke up. He hated the thought of needing help, so he promises himself that this is more about her than him—of making up for the way things were before when she’d been left alone to deal with her problems. They’d all been alone then, and they shouldn’t have been. But he could no longer blame them exclusively for that; he’d purposely stayed in denial, too scared of his world crumbling with the truth.
Mulling on those thoughts, his dozes off again.
Just when she had begun to get used to the oblivion that was her new home, the empty corner of Sora’s heart that she was destined to remain in, everything had changed. How it had happened, she had no clue. She had blacked out and awoken on stone streets, with every muscle in her body aching from the long forgotten sensation of gravity. More then that, she felt a huge weight in her chest. Emotion flooded through her at a rate she had never known before, constricting her throat and sending her mind racing. She was scared, terrified even.
Everything was too solid to be a dream, besides she could not dream any more. She could only remember. And she had never been to this place before.
Mustering her strength, she pushed herself off the ground, her arms shaking under unfamiliar weight. She managed to get to her knees, still shaking, and noticed her head was throbbing as well. But none of that mattered. As soon as she accepted that this was reality, there was only one thing on her mind: find Roxas. With this thought, she found the strength to push herself from the pavement.
Walking proved futile. Her legs simply did not seem to want to hold her weight, and shook with every motion as she attempted to stand. After a minute she managed to stand, but her legs gave out as soon as she took a step, sending her crashing back to the ground. Her hands got the worst of it, as she had used them to break her fall. Her pale features scrunched in pain and she collapsed back into a sitting position, inspecting her hands for damage. The inside of her gloved began to feel warm, and a bit wet. Not by much, but the unfamiliar sensation caused her to yank off one of the black accessories, only to see short smears of red on her palms.
“Is this... blood?” Xion had never bled before.
As a nobody, her body had been an empty shell, run on shadows and energy. Her own body had never even been real. There had never been blood running through her veins. Until now.
All of this was too much to handle, and it made her head spin. She clutched her bare hand to her forehead in an attempt to steady herself, but the metallic scent of the blood only worsened the nausea. “Why... Whats happening..?”
Blue eyes squeezed shut as tight as they could and her breath came in heavy pants. She couldn't seem to get enough oxygen. All she wanted to do was lay down and go to sleep, but the nagging worries of Roxas and Axel kept her from giving in.
She heard something then, a familiar voice, and it was enough to force her eyes open and lift her head just enough to see the blurred vision of blonde hair and pale skin running towards her.
“Roxas...” And her vision went dark once again.
When her eyes opened again, she was laying on a soft mattress, much softer than her own bed at the castle had ever been. The nausea had passed for the most part, but she still felt... odd.
She stared blankly at the ceiling for a moment, once again begging the question if any of this was real or not. She lifted her palm above her face, taking in the bandage that covered it. A tiny bit of red had soaked through. Curious, she lifted her other hand and poked at the wound, flinching as the sting of pain shocked her. Her breath hitched for a moment, clutching her hand to her chest. She forced herself to sit up a moment later, supporting her heavy weight on her elbows.
The first thing she noticed was the shock of red hair. But when she rubbed her eyes it was still there. He was still there. Axel snored lightly in a chair pushed the the corner of the room. She shot straight up, now fully awake, but still not completely convinced that she wasn’t dreaming. But there was someone else in the room as well. Hearing the soft breathing next to her, Xion looked down beside her bed and almost sobbed with joy.
“Roxas? Axel?”

“You can ride them?” The day just kept getting better and better! If it were not for the mission she already feared neglecting too long, she would have taken the man’s suggestion right away. “I’ll have to give it a try sometime.” She continued as she nuzzled the bird’s beak.
Speaking of the mission… “Oh!” In her chocobo-infatuation, Xion had almost completely forgotten why she was in Duscae to begin with. The stranger certainly had a lot of knowledge about the surrounding area, and this seemed as good a place to start as any. “Um, sir! Can I ask you something?”
“Yes.” he gave another nod of his head. “They’re one of the most favored methods of transportation.” He explains, reaching out a hand to gently stroke a chocobo’s beak.
“A question?” He asks, a curious glint his eyes. He crosses his arms for a brief moment, to ponder what her question might be, but finally nods his head. “Go ahead. Ask me whatever you’d like.”
“Well, I was wondering if you have noticed anything strange lately,” She began, choosing her words carefully as to not bring about suspicion. “Weather patterns, monsters that shouldn’t be here or have unusual behavior, maybe?” There was obviously something going on in this world, or Xion would not have been sent there. But other than that she was given no clues as to what her objective actually was.

I always found this scene very poignant and sweet ;; and to me it was a big boost in Xion’s cinnamon roll status hhh
{Ugh im sorry i keep disappearing. It’s so hard to make myself be productive, even when it’s something i love.}
“Oh! Ah…” She reached out her hands to steady him, but she honestly had no idea what to do. The man seemed to be over-reacting, but Xion had no way of knowing for sure. She supposed the least she could do was find this Yao and give him the message, even if it was an odd request. But she couldn’t just leave him…
He was lying on his face, so there was no way for him to see the giant key she materialized. As she focused her energy into a green glow, the cut on his hand disappeared. She dismissed the keyblade before tapping his shoulder. “Um… I don’t think it’s very serious… See? It’s already healed.”
Ling stayed where he was, his face pressed to the ground, the smell of earth making him fairly dizzy. Had it not been for the faint breathing, he almost might have passed for a stiff. Then, with his luck, a horse would charge out of nowhere and trample him but for now, he felt nothing, save for the sting of his wound. Oh well, it would be over soon.
Much sooner than he realized, actually.
Unaware that Xion was still standing there, Ling gave a start and sat up at once, all set to shoo her away again when he noticed the blood was gone. Gasping, he examined his hand, then stared up at her incredulously.
“What–you–how–?!” was just about all he could say.
Xion did her best to look inconspicuous. She gave a small shrug before she stood. “I didn’t do anything really.” She lied, “ Perhaps you’ve just calmed down? I’ve heard that fear makes things seem bigger than they really are.”
She offered a gloved hand to help Ling to his feet. Hopefully she could go about her mission in peace, now. “Feel better?”
Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs
"Wake up, sleepyhead."
Was that Noctis telling her to wake up? She must be dreaming. A long groan escaped Xion’s throat as she rolled over in bed.
