Eren went quiet for a moment before nodding. âI imagine that would be hard on anyone. â his face had fell as he reflected on the situation and what Shena had just revealed to him.
Then he turned, and with a smile not quite as bright as before but just as reassuring, he continued. âBut youâll see it one day. And itâll feel like there was never anything before hand. We all will. â
___
She wrinkled her nose in amusement but nodded respectfully. âI see⌠I guess one manâs death wish is anotherâs escape.â Max realized how naive she sounded, but she found that there were some truth in that.
âI dunno about the horse aspect of it but I imagine Iâd find something to occupy my time pretty easily. Doesnât matter if itâs cleaning or running errands. Itâs a place to be thatâs not going anywhere unless I do. â She chuckled light heartedly. âI just need a bed and a meal and Iâll be fine. I imagine my reasoning doesnât make sense to you, but it doesnât have to.â ââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââââ
Shena raised her head and looked over to him, noticing the look in his eyes as he proclaimed that they would see the outside world some day. She pursed her lips together, not certain how to reply at first before settling on something. âYouâre really determined, arenât you?â She gave a small smile. âI suppose I should be too. Iâve noticed that a lot of people just want to move more into the walls than out. But we didnât have the walls a long time ago, right? So I just assume weâre meant to be out thereâŚâ
â
Levi furrowed his brow at that. âIf you want a meal and a bed, you could join the Garrison. They seem to like to laze around a lot these daysâŚâ With the strange period of peace since Wall Maria fell, things seemed to be going back to normal with the exception of shortages everywhere. âThe Scouting Legion will require a lot of hard work. We donât rest even if the people think that we are wasting their money. I would be pissed too if I didnât see any progress with something I am forking over money for and not seeing anything come from it.â
Eren nodded some, agreeing with her. âWell, I think you have to be confident if your reasons allow itâŚâ he breathed in deeply and then continued. âBut moving everyone within the walls is a disaster waiting to happen. We wouldnât just have titans to worry about. But I agree, we must have come from something greater. Thereâs to many stories told for us not to have come from outside of the walls.â
____
Max shook her head a but, smiling some. She had thought of the garrisons but that was to close to home to be comfortable. âItâs complicated. â She responding, an attempt to change the subject. âBut Iâm use to hard work. As for the progress⌠progress is subjective, isnât it? Theyâre looking for breakthroughs and theyâre not going to find them. Not yet. But I think if they took away the scouts then theyâd be left with a lot of issues that they canât fix. Thatâs the thing with science, isnât it? Breakthroughs happen slowly. â
Shena listened to Erenâs words carefully, craning her neck to look at the walls in the distance. What he said was right even if she didnât want to admit it. Turning back to him, she gave him a wavering smile. âYouâre asking the wrong person if you mention having confidence in yourself. Maybe I am just being selfish. I wanted to see the outside world at least once before I died. And I didnât want to sit rotting in here⌠Why would anyone?â â âI see.â Levi knew that answer was one to allude to not asking anymore questions so he went along with steering the conversation elsewhere. âI wouldnât call it a science even though one of the Scouting members would disagree with me. Itâs a fight that we canât afford to give up on.â He looked around briefly at the recruits passing them by or working. They all still had a glow in their faces. âIf they would lose their ignorance, we would be getting somewhere a lot faster. But you canât make someone feel a certain way I suppose.â He straightened. âI donât know what Erwin is doing. Maybe got stuck in the bathroom or something⌠man is taking his timeâŚâ
Eren chuckled some, enjoying the conversation. He wasnât sure if it was the topic or Shena, but he felt as if he had just had a breath of fresh air âthere are different kinds of confidence one can have.â He reassured her. âAnd I donât believe thatâs selfish. Weâre not any different from any other animal. Eventually, being caged starts to take a tole.â
____
âNo⌠but theyâll figure it out sooner or later. But we need some to believe and be unaware. It keeps the rest hopeful and driven. And it allows new eyes on the situation. â She shrugged some, watching her feet as she walked. âIâll have to take my leave, I think. The kitchen, unfortunately, calls my name.â
âI guess the analogy fits even if I donât like it,â Shena replied, clasping her hands behind her back as she stopped walking, still looking up to the top of the wall. âI guess the Scouts would be our only hope if that is the case.I may not be the best soldier but I wanted to help in what ways that I could⌠and I didnât think it meant staying inside or reading books about the outside when there was a way to actually go.â She gave a sideways smile, glancing over to him. â Levi gave a stiff shrug and side stepped in order to allow her the space needed to leave for the kitchens. âI guess so. But everyone finds the truth eventually. Itâs whether or not you fight even after discovering the truth is what really matters.â He nodded to Max. âIf you come to the Scouts, I guess I will be seeing you around. Push hard. Donât get in trouble.â
âWell⌠being a good soldier isnât necessarily your ability in combat. Or I donât believe so. â he smiled some, almost embarrassed in himself. He felt as if he sounded like a child telling bedtime stories. âNo matter what, I do believe that thereâs something worth it all out there. And I believe thereâs an answer to all our troubles. Maybe weâre even closer then we think.â
___
âThatâs hopeful. â She commented but didnât go more in depth. She started towards the kitchen, giving a small nod of leave. She didnât look back as she stomped across the yard in a half hurried manner. âAnd I donât go looking for trouble! It finds me!â
Shena picked her head up a little at that, a bit perplexed by his words but she didnât seem offended. âR-right,â she blinked her eyes before she realized it was getting late, the sun starting to set. âAhh, I gotta go finish up with stocking the regiment store! Or else i will miss dinner.â She chuckled a little and waved a hand. âSorry to keep you longer than i thought. But the chat was nice. Maybe I will see you around?â --- Levi feigned a roll of his eyes once before he turned and made sure the gate was locked up before stepping away. You met all sorts of people in the military, much more so the Scouting Legion. She certainly fit the bill, if he didnât know any better. Now he needed to go and find Erwin...Â
