Can art teach us to be more empathetic?

Folks are getting hyped for the release of the Golden Kamuy anime, and are enjoying the manga. They’re making cosplay of clever, brave, funny Ainu characters.

Honestly, I do feel very protective of my culture, and I feel a little apprehensive of it being out in the mainstream. At the same time, I’m glad to see it represented, and I hope more of my people can see themselves reflected in the world. The world is a capricious place, full of beauty and love and compassion and hated and bigotry and ignorance. All of these things at the same time.

I hope that folks enjoying the Golden Kamuy will want to know more about our real history, past and present. I hope people will learn more about the diversity of Japan, and that it does have Indigenous peoples, today. Ainu Moshir may be occupied by Russia and Japan, but we’re still here. Can you see us yet?
