“She’s dead, Suguru! Can’t you get through your thick fucking skull? She’s not coming back! Why can’t you understand that!”
Those words echoed in his ears. He knew that; he knew you weren’t coming back. He thought that he had accepted the reality, but maybe, deep, deep, DEEP down, he had hope you’d come walking through the door and greet him like always.
“Stop it.” His voice was firm and stern, but his words fell on deaf ears.
“I’m right here! Why can’t you just forget her and move on?! She’s not coming back! She’s 5 inches deep in the ground! It’s like I’m competing with a fucking ghost! It’s like everything I do you find her in it! It’s like everything I do you compare it to how she would do it! I know you don’t say it out loud, but I can see it on your face! You even still wear your WEDDING RING!!! You can’t even take it off, not even for me?! I’m right here and alive! Why can’t you understand that she’s never coming back! You’re still paying for the things in her name when she’s not even here!”
Suguru’s chest tightened as she continued, his fist clenching and unclenching, heart pounding against his chest, breath heavy.
His fist throbbing with pain against the wall
“Don’t talk about my wife like that,” his voice was stern but shaky. Eyes glaring at her, glossy from the tears threatening to fall.
He was never one to raise his voice, never let his emotions control arguments.
But his girlfriend wasn’t backing down.
“ god can’t yo-“ she was cut off.
Suguru wasn’t going to entertain the idea of someone badmouthing his wife, his wife who can’t even defend herself when she’s not even able to.
Because who was she to talk about his wife? Who was she to say how he could or couldn’t grieve his own wife? WHO was she really to him?
“ I said enough!” His voice boomed across the apartment. The same apartment that he once shared with you, the same apartment where all the beautiful memories he created with you blossomed. The same apartment where your wedding photo was hung, smack in the middle of the apartment. The first thing anyone sees when entering the house.
The same apartment that she slowly started to turn into hers. Slowly removing you from the picture, slowly taking over your place in the universe, slowly taking your space in the bed, closet, etc. Slowly forgetting your laughter, your voice, the only way he could really remember was because of the voice message you left, the videos you took. Slowly forgetting about you. The apartment is slowly losing your smell.
But most of all, he was slowly forgetting your face. He can only really remember because of the pictures, but whenever he went to sleep, he could only see a figure with a blurry face.
“You have no right to talk about my wife. My wife, whom I’ve had for the majority of my life. My wife, whom you’ve slowly tried to get rid of! My wife, who still has my last name even if it’s written on her gravestone ! My wife, who if she were still alive would be right here instead of you!” Voice raising after each word.
He knew what he was saying was horrible. He knows he should apologize, but can’t. Or maybe he doesn’t want to?
A beat of silence floats around them. Until he decides that enough is enough.
“I want you out by tomorrow. I knew dating you would be too much and a bad idea. I’m sorry for wasting your time for 9 months, but you deserve someone else.” His voice sounded exhausted, tired from playing a role he shouldn’t have played from the start.
Walking towards the front door, hand reaching for the doorknob, when the sound of his ex stopped him
“You couldn’t get over her? Not even after 8 fucking years?” Her voice trembling,
“No matter how much time passes, I won’t be able to 'get over' her.”
Opening the door He’s met with the cold crisp evening air,not looking back, he leaves. He doesn’t slam the door like he wants to.
Suguru wasn’t one to drink his feelings away. Not after the big lecture you gave him about taking care of his health if he was going to grow old with you.
Sitting by himself, two drinks in strong enough to help him with his heavy heart, he decided to call your phone. The phone that was probably dead and buried somewhere in an old box with your stuff.
Your phone still operating fine, your number still owned by you, your phone still under his plan never stopped paying for it. Didn’t even cross his mind to take it off.
Going straight to voicemail
“Hey, honey! Sorry, I can’t answer the phone right now, but I’ll call you back as soon as I can! Leave a message after the kiss, mwah! Love you
“Hey, honey, I just wanted to hear your voice.” his words slurred a bit.
He knows you aren’t going to hear it, but no harm does it do if he just wants to hear your voice right ?
Each time he’d order a drink, he’d call you. Just to hear your voice and hear you say “I love you” to him.
The bartender cut him off after he noticed how drunk he was and offered him water to help sober up a bit. Pushing the water aside, he could finally feel and breathe without the feeling of his heart being heavy. The bartender, trying to help him try to find a ride home grabs his phone and goes through his contacts.
“love of my life,” the very first one that pops up. The bartender presses on your contact only for it to go straight to voicemail. The bartender goes back into his contract and presses on Satoru, hoping he’d answer
“Hey Suguru, what’s up?” Satoru's voice comes out tired
“Umm, your friend had way too much to drink, and he insisted on getting more drinks. I think you should come and get him.”
“Of course, um, if you can tell me the name of the bar, I’ll be there in a couple of minutes.”
Even if it was a bit busy, the bartender did his best to keep an eye out for Suguru. Making sure nobody bothered him and gave strict instructions to the other bartender’s .
After a couple of minutes, Satoru makes his way into the bar, thanking the bartender for helping his best friend.
“My pretty girl,” his words slurred together, “I want my pretty, pretty girl.”
“I know you do, bud, but you gotta work with me, please.”
You and Suguru met in the middle of high school. You were related to satoru and seeing him leave the clan, you decided to follow him, after all you both were really close.
After Satoru introduced you to his friend group, you noticed Suguru. It was something about him that caught your attention immediately. Was it his smile? Or maybe his purple eyes? Maybe it was his personality? Or maybe it was his long, fluffy hair? Whatever it was, you wanted to know him better.
After months of going out to eat, karaoke, and going to arcades, enjoying your youth with everyone. Suguru started to notice little things about you. He thought that since he saw you every day, the feeling in his chest was because he liked you as a friend, like how he liked Shoko as a friend too, not because he thought you were beautiful or because your smile lit up the room, right?
Whatever that feeling was, everyone noticed. The back and forth teasing, flirting, lingering touches. He didn’t want it to keep going like this, so he manned up and asked you out.
After graduation, the wedding was immediate. It felt like a fairytale, everything was going well until the higher-ups sent you on a mission.
Usually, you and Suguru would go on missions together, but since the higher-ups sent him on another mission with Satoru, and they said it was a less dangerous mission, you decided to take it.
Calling Suguru, letting him know that you won’t be able to call later, he didn’t mind.
“Be careful, my pretty girl.”
“Puh-leas, I’m basically stronger than everyone.”
“Cockiness runs in the family, huh?”
“So does beauty, and I got both.”
“I think Satoru would disagree, pretty girl.”
“Satorus is just jealous of me for being perfect.”
“Sure, whatever, just make sure my strong, pretty girl gets home safe, ok?”
“I’ll be fine, I promise my love.”
That was the last time he heard your voice, and oh, how he wishes he could go back in time and do multiple things differently. He’d stay home instead of going on that mission or plead and beg for you to stay home. Maybe if he finished the mission earlier, he’d be able to protect you.
Satoru has seen every side of Suguru; they shared their ups and downs, but not once did he ever think he’d witness this part of Suguru ever.
The gut-wrenching sound his best friend made haunts him every day. The look of him running towards your cold body, ripped in half, dried blood across your face, eyes lifeless .
Satoru felt sick to his stomach. He’d seen everything, from seeing his classmates and colleagues on that table, but he never once thought he’d see you lying there.
After the burial ceremony, Suguru would sit by your grave, head leaning on the cold stone, thinking it was you. Days, weeks would go by, he was always there, not leaving your side again, whether it’d be raining, snowing, or sunny, he was always there.
“Suguru, honey, please get up, you can’t keep going on like this, please, honey, I’m sorry, I’m so sorry, I never wanted to leave you, I promise, please forgive me, I’m so sorry.”
You uncontrollably sobbed as you reached out to touch his hair, something you always did, but you no longer had that privilege. You were desperate to feel anything.
Noticing a familiar car pull up, you run towards it.
“Satoru, help him, please. He’s getting sick, and I need him to be okay, please, Satoru, help him.”
Satoru sighed at the sight of his best friend.
“Suguru, how long have you been here?”
“Leave me alone,” Suguru let out a tired whisper.
“Suguru, y/n wouldn’t want to see you like this. Come on.”
“Just leave me alone I said!”
Satoru knew it was the grief talking and not his actual best friend.
“ I get you’re upset, I get you miss her, but she was also my cousin! I also miss her; it’s not just you. I know that’s rude of me to say, but it’s been 10 months, Suguru. She would hate to see you like this.”
“Honey, please listen to Satoru. I don’t want to see you like this, it’s breaking my heart, please Suguru.”
Satoru pulled Suguru up and threw him over his shoulder. “You can be mad at me, but I’m not letting you wither away here.”
Suguru didn’t have the energy to fight, because he was right. He wasn’t the only one who lost you; everyone did.
Seeing them reach the car, you tried to follow, but were pushed back
You’re stuck here forever.
You could only watch as the car disappeared into the distance.
From that day forward, you’d only see Suguru if he was accompanied by Satoru, Shoko or even your family, but he was never able to go alone again.
