Rant

Why did I even bother to go looking on Craigslist for a cage? It makes me so angry to see adds posted for rats that are "free need gone asap" and list nothing else. Some of them don't even come with cages because they're "borrowed". I don't think I could emotionally handle adopting them if they're even still available. UGH!

At the vet for Beauford again. His lump started to turn black yesterday and today looks scabbed and raw. I don't think he has much time left. He ran and played today like nothing was wrong. I'm going to see what we can do to keep him comfortable as long as his tumor isn't causing him any pain.

I’m thinking of using a portion of my tax return along with money I already have saved to buy a camera. Can anyone recommend a good entry level camera for taking pictures of rats and dogs and animals in general?

I finally am ready to get a dog and the association just now tells us we have breed restrictions (no pit bulls, rottweilers, or dobermans)… I was so heartbroken because we found out while at the humane society trying to adopt a pit bull. It’s so hard looking because pit bulls are easily passed up by so many and they’re abundant in the metro Detroit area. I wish there was a way to filter out all the pit mixes on sites like petfinder and adoptapet. I want a pit so bad and our city doesn’t have any restrictions on the breed and to find out 4 months later that I can’t get one is so upsetting. It doesn’t Stat anywhere in out bylaws that there are breed restrictions either.

We’ve been looking for 4 months now and seriously looking for the last two weeks and I just want a young female dog. Preferably under a year. There are so many pits that tug on my heart and I can’t have them.

Hopefully a nonpit mix shows up that’s short haired, young, and active… I feel like I’m asking to much with that.

It makes me so angry that 4 elderly woman of my association get to set the rules. Pits can be such amazing dogs. Any dog can bite. I can guarantee my pit would be so much better behaved than the annoying Maltese my neighbor chains up in their yard and leaves outside to bark for hours.

Sorry about this rant. I just miss having a dog in my life and this is literally the longest I’ve gone without one and I would have most likely had a dog Wednesday, but my association is a bunch of morons. The site manager doesn’t even agree with the rules for breeds, but he can’t do anything about it and since it’s service dogs only, I can’t really do much in the way of a petition to allow them. :(

New to rats, help.

I just got a pet rat today and I don’t know how to make it love me. Someone please help :(

You need to get your rat a same sex friend. Your rats will be a lot more social if they have a friend and less prone to illness. You need to take baby steps. Sit by the cage and let them sniff you. Put your hand in the cage without moving it and let them approach you for a while. It can take time so font be discouraged. I've had 3 boys who I got as feeders on December 5th who aren't completely social. They'll come to me but two of them still run if I try to post them. It took about 2 months to get Beauford comfortable with me.
