Would now be a good time to bring up my long held belief that Lake Calenhad from Dragon Age is basically just Lake Superior turned sideways?

There’s even a tribal nation called Red Cliff in Wisconsin, on the Bayfield peninsula. Okay the location doesn’t match up exactly with where the fictional Redcliffe is positioned on Lake Calenhad, and the Keweenaw peninsula part of Michigan is sanded down, but otherwise I really do feel like they just turned Lake Superior sideways and called it a day.

They’ve even got a version of the Apostle Islands in there.

It’s kinda unhinged to see some of the “old Hollywood” glamour style actresses held up as like trad icons as in “oh it would be soooo much simpler if women just went back to wearing little aprons doing little girl jobs” genre of coquette posting. Like those women were often absolutely not conservative or traditional by the standards of their 1920’s-50’s day but they’re not even traditional by the standards of modern coquettish tradwifery. U think hedy lamarr or marlene dietrich was a coquette pushover? You’re being distracted by the fact that in the 1920’s-50’s people just dressed in the fashions of their times and it wasn’t an inherent feature of political ideology. Those women had fucking jobs

So, if there’s one thing I really don’t want to get lost in the tributes to the 50th anniversary of the Edmund Fitzgerald sinking today, it’s the courage of the crews of the Arthur Anderson and the William Clay Ford.

When the USCG had no way of immediate search resources aside from a fixed wing aircraft and a helicopter from their Traverse City air base, both ships voluntarily (albeit with HUGE trepidations) went back out into the storm, one that could only be truly described by all those who were out there that night as truly hell on earth, to search for any survivors.

They searched until well into the next morning. Tragically, all they found were an oil slick, life preservers, mutilated life boats, and various flotsam and jetsam.

God I love their arrangements in general, but especially this one.

50 years ago, on November 9th, 1975, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald left Superior, Wisconsin on a beautiful and unseasonably warm autumn day carrying 29 men and 26,116 long tons of taconite. It was to be the Fitzgerald’s last run of the season before putting up for winter repairs, and it was to be Captain Ernest McSorley’s final run before retiring to spend time with his wife.

The crew was aware of an inbound storm due to roll in overnight, but no one had predicted how two storm fronts, one from the southwest and one down from Canada, would clash over Lake Superior, causing what would be remembered as one of the worst storms of the century. McSorley was respected as one of the best captains on the Great Lakes, a heavy weather sailor who knew how to handle storms. McSorley rarely opted for cautious leeward routes but as this storm began to unfold he chose to keep close to Isle Royale and the Ontario shore. Our last communication from them was a message from McSorley to fellow freighter Arthur M. Anderson at 7.10 pm.

“We are holding our own,” they said.

It’s haunting to know that at this very moment fifty years ago they were probably in great spirits in good water, bringing the ship back on the last run of the 1975 season, looking forward to spending the winter at home.

Tomorrow, on the 50th anniversary of the sinking, the Detroit Mariners’ Church bells will ring 30 times — once for each of the souls lost to the lake and once for Gordon Lightfoot, who brought a somber remembrance and immortality to them all.

It was stupid good. So good in fact that the bbc filmed a version and put it on dvd when it debuted. I bought that dvd after I saw the show and put it up on the Internet Archive. The audio is not great but the dancing is spectacular. Ever see a pas de deux around an anatomical dissection? You will.
